24.01.2022 What is hand foot and mouth disease? This is a mild illness caused by a number of enteroviruses. It mainly occurs in children under 10, but can also occur in older children and adults ... Symptoms to look for? Blisters inside the cheeks, gums, and on the sides of the tongue, as well as palms of the hands and soles of the feet. In infants blisters can sometimes be seen in the nappy area. Blisters usually last for 7 to 10 days. Children can sometimes have a low fever, irritability, sore throat, tiredness, feel off colour and may be off food for a day or two. How is it spread? Usually by person to person contact. The virus is spread from the faeces of an infected person to the mouth of the next person by contaminated hands. It is also spread by secreations from the mouth or respiratory system and by direct contact with the fluid from blisters. Many adults are often exposed to this virus without symptoms. For pregnant women, there is no evidence of risk to unborn babies. How to prevent the illness? Good hand hygiene is the best protection. Washing hands with soap and water after going to the toilet, before eating, after wiping noses, and after changing nappies or soiled clothing. Avoid sharing cups, eating utensils, personal hygiene items, shoes and socks Wash any soiled clothing and surfaces or toys that may have been contaminated Teach children about cough and sneeze etiquette - cough and sneeze into a tissue or the inside of your arm and never into the air or on your hand. Your doctor can diagnose hand foot and mouth disease based on symptoms. Children should stay away from childcare and school until their blisters have dried-up and any rash has gone their their fever has settled. If you are concerned your child may show any signs please book in to see one of our caring doctors. #handfootandmouth#childhealth#familycare#familyhealth#healthawarness#hygiene#handhygiene#childcare#generalpractice

21.01.2022 This October 10th marks World Mental Health Day. This weekend is a great time to take stock of your life and re-evaluate how much your life structure is currently setting you up to wake feeling inspired, think in a balanced way and remain emotionally resilient. Some areas to help you start this review:... 1 - emotional intimacy: do you regularly spend time with people who you know care about you? This means interactions that are beyond just catching up (i.e. how have you been) but rather feeling a grounded close connectedness (how did x,y,z go?) 2- kindness: do you have responsibility for others that you care for? A partner, your community, children or a pet? 3- movement: have you been moving your body daily with a good balance between physical challenge and gentle movement? 4- sharing: do you have someone that you share the depth of human experience with? Not just you hopes and celebrating successes, but also difficult emotions like fear, frustration and guilt. 5- idle time: are you almost always on the move from one thing to the next or do you ease the pace and time pressure by allowing plenty of gaps (and play) between each commitment? Idle time often happens when sitting on public transport, arriving early for an appointment and laying a blanket out on the lawn or at the beach. These moments allow you to decompress, create mental space and access your natural state of play. 6- do you enjoy plenty of high quality protein and healthy fat-rich meals? Think eggs, fatty fish and liberal drizzling of your favourite natural cold pressed oils like toasted sesame, olive, hazelnut or avocado oils. #mentalhealthawareness #realconvo #worldmentalhealthday2020 #lifeaudit

20.01.2022 After months of devastating fires, we’re truly grateful for all of the rain that has blessed the land right across NSW. While our country is in desperate need of more rainfall, it’s important to consider how heavy rain and flooding can affect human health. In particular, rain and humid weather create the ‘perfect’ conditions for mould to grow . Mould is a fungus that thrives in damp and dark places around the home during the rainy seasons. Mould is commonly found in wardrob...es that don’t have adequate ventilation or any part of the home that is exposed to moisture, like the bathroom or laundry . There is evidence to show that exposure to mould can contribute asthma, runny nose, respiratory infections, coughs, headaches and nausea. Ventilation, heating, dehumidifiers and keeping areas clean and dry are practical and effective ways to reduce the harm of mould on your health. If you have any concerns about the effect of mould on your health, chat to one of our friendly GPs for helpful and practical advice.

18.01.2022 Is your body getting adequate magnesium to function at its best? Magnesium is an essential nutrient involved in over 300 chemical reactions in the body! Muscles need this mineral to contract.... Nerves need it to send and receive messages. Magnesium also keeps your heart beating steadily and your immune system resilient. By ensuring you have a magnesium rich diet, you are helping mitigate against, and alleviate conditions such as heart disease, stroke, asthma, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis and depression. Magnesium also helps regulates sleep, mental clarity, muscle relaxation, blood pressure, and antioxidant production. Much research suggests that the majority of Australians are magnesium deficient. You can increase your magnesium levels through magnesium sprays, baths and lotions. Magnesium is incredibly well absorbed through the skin! A more delicious solution is to enjoy this mineral from foods such as: Avocado Nuts Legumes Seeds Salmon Mackerel Bananas Leafy greens

17.01.2022 What does ‘High Cholesterol’ actually mean? Typically when high cholesterol is discussed with your doctor, it refers to an accumulation of fat pockets within the arteries, also known as atherosclerosis. The buildup of fat pockets can limit blood flow through the arteries and this can be a health concern because the arteries nourish the heart. When the plaque breaks apart, this can lead to clots triggering a heart attack or stroke ... The body packages cholesterol into either low density lipoprotein (known as LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL is referrer to as ‘good cholesterol’. Factors contributing to high cholesterol can be diet related such as from trans fats. Unhealthy lifestyle choices also play a very strong role. Some people are genetically predisposed to elevated cholesterol and they need to be particularly careful with their diet and lifestyle. A simple blood test can determine your cholesterol levels. We have dedicated pathology collectors inside Elanora Heights Medical Practice Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays so you can see your doctor for a blood test get it done before leaving. There’s no need to go anywhere else! For more information please call us directly, we are here to help. #highcholesterol#epigenetics#cholesterol#hearthealth#cardiovasculardisease#stroke #healthyheart#bloodcollection#pathology#generalpractice#healthyliving#wellbeing#holistic#circulation#exercise#keepfit#livewell#integrative

17.01.2022 What is your favourite morning drink? If you’re like most people, coffee or black tea may be your go-to. Both coffee and black tea are a source of antioxidants. They’re also a huge source of enjoyment for many people and this joy can’t be devalued. The key is balance and moderation! ... Some stress hormones like cortisol are naturally elevated in the early hours of the morning so if you add to this load a start to your day with lots going on with the kids, frustrating traffic and rushing against the clock, your stress hormones will be surging already quite a lot. It's ok to release a little stress hormone but not too much and certainly not too often The issue with coffee and black tea is that compounds in this much loved drink can actually spike stress hormones leaving you feeling on edge with an exaggerated stress response. By no means do we want to take away your daily pleasure What can you do? Can you alternate coffee with a mug of roasted dandelion tea or a dandy latte? This drink is warm and soothing and has the richness and slight bitterness that black tea and coffee have, without the stress hormone spike. In fact, dandelion is too choice for liver support and detoxification. Maybe a choice for days when you’ve got a lot on? Some people feel that they perform their best when they wait until mid morning to have coffee or black tea. When you do have black tea or coffee ensure you have this with either a fat-rich nut or dairy milk and ideally also a nourishing breakfast. Coffee and black tea can be dehydrating. After loosing fluids as you sleep through your breath and natural perspiration, it’s hydration your body needs most. Drink separate glass of fresh water with your coffee and black tea. Research shows that everyone sleeps better without caffeine after mid-day - this includes people who never feel post caffeine jitters. #coffee#lovecoffee#cortisol#stress#highcortisol#calm#relax#hydrate#nourish#stresshormones#morningroutine#morningritual #teaeveryday #dailypleasure

Zinc: helps wound healing enhances immune function reduces severity of colds decreases inflammation promotes healthy blood sugar levels balances hormones improves fertility The best foods to increase your zinc levels: Pumpkin & hemp seeds Grass fed beef, lamb & free range chicken Lentils & chickpeas Cashews & almonds Spinach Mushroom Kefir Avocado Our friendly nurses are trained in wound management and wound healing. 17.01.2022 Monounsaturated fats such as avocados, olive oil and nuts reduce inflammation, balance hormones, lower your risk of heart disease, lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase HDL (good) cholesterol. Eating healthy fats with your fruit and veggies also helps your body absorb nutrients. A great way to boost your level of healthy fats is to sprinkle ground nuts onto your meals, add half an avocado on the side and drizzle cold pressed olive oil over the top of your food. ... Tip ... all oils can easily go rancid if not stored correctly or consumed within a year. We recommend choosing your oil in a size you can easily consume within 6 months, stored wrapped or in a dark bottle.

15.01.2022 The first 1000 days of a child’s life brings the most significant shaping of their brain, body and emotion regulation. Isn’t it fascinating to watch how babies are constantly discovering and learning about their new world. Their brains develop through:... Stimulating sensory environments Lots of activities Touch Emotional responsiveness and mirroring A healthy dose of the above is highly correlated with healthy development in later years. Research in these areas has led to some wonderful services for parents with post natal depression where babies can receive this crucial attunement touch with baby massage. 6 months before baby is even conceived shapes the baby’s health by the balance and quality of nutrients mum and dad eat and by what they are exposed to whether helpful (like sunshine and plenty of rest) or or unhelpful (like stress and excessive toxins). We are here to help if you want to learn more, please book an appointment to meet with one of our two practices nurses, Kath Chapman and Joanna Dally, both of whom have a very keen passion for preconception care and Pediatrician nursing. #northernbeachesmedical#familyhealth#raisingchildren#raisingbabies#familyhealthtips#babydevelopment#first1000days#conception#pregnancy#healthypregnancy

13.01.2022 Just as the eyes see and the ears hear ... the mind thinks. As a result, our minds are constantly active. Mindfulness is about becoming aware of the activity in your mind: The pace of your thoughts. The nature of your thoughts. While we can’t be mindful all the time, we know from research that it’s health-promoting to practice moving and thinking mindfully regularly throughout your day:... Mindfulness boosts emotional and physical wellbeing and clinical studies show how a regular practice alleviates anxiety and depression Mindfulness can also help children handle the pressure of study, work and social situations as they get older Choose one activity - any activity. Stop and totally focus on what you are doing. Mindfulness is simply paying attention to what's happening right now on a moment by moment basis. It undoubtedly happens naturally when you’re absorbed in your favourite hobby like surfing or playing music. What are some mindulness activities you enjoy? 04.01.2022 When bones become thinner and lose their strength this is referred to as osteoporosis. The bad news is that most people with osteoporosis don't know they have it until they have a bone density test or break a bone The good news is that you can avoid brittle bones! ... Eat a calcium rich diet, this includes foods such as sardines, wild caught salmon, green leafy vegetables - especially broccoli and water cress Increase your vitamin D levels: we are fortunate to have a lot of sunshine in Australia (If you don’t spend time outdoors, you can supplement with vitamin D - this is especially important during winter months) Increase daily weight bearing exercises: lifting weights, jogging, climbing stairs, boxing or playing tennis If you are concerned you may be at risk of developing osteoporosis or if you have joint pain, one of our friendly doctors will do a physical assessment. Our doctors might initially check to see if there are any changes in your height as this may be due to silent fractures of the spine causing it to compress or curve. Our doctors may also refer you for a bone density test of your spine and hips to see if you are at risk. This is recommended by Medicare for anyone over the age of 70. If you would like to know more, contact us directly and book in to see one of our experienced caring doctors.

04.01.2022 A note from The Heart Foundation: regular, moderate physical activity is great for your heart health. It’s never too late to start and get the benefits. It’s also important to break up your sitting time with movement even if it’s a 5 second stretch. Find what works for you, your body and your health Our top tip? Incorporate more incidental movement into your day. Opt for a standing desk, take a walk at lunch, walk home from work or park the car farther away from your destination and take a few minutes throughout the day to stretch your body and take a few deep breaths.

02.01.2022 Did you know that hand sanitisers must contain at least 60% alcohol to effectively kill bacteria on the surface of your skin? And while hand sanitiser provides a convenient addition to your hand hygiene regime it unfortunately isn't as effective as proper hand-washing What does thorough hand washing mean? It means lathering your hands with soap on the fronts and backs of your hands (and between your fingers!) Scrubbing your hands for a minimum of 30 seconds Rinsing ...your hands under running water Drying your hands with clean towel or air drying Other than a resilient robust immune system, proper hand hygiene is considered one of the most effective practices to reduce the spread of pathogens and prevent infection, including the COVID-19 virus . On another note, please be considerate to your fellow community and cough and sneeze into your clothing and never into the air! Even if you know you're well, the person down wind of you doesn't. Let's set a good example considerate #hygieneetiquette together.
