17.01.2022 The system has moved slightly south this morning **Severe Weather Warning for HEAVY RAINFALL** For people in Herbert and Lower Burdekin and parts of North Tropi...cal Coast and Tablelands and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders Forecast Districts. Issued at 5:08 am Tuesday, 5 January 2021. EX-TROPICAL CYCLONE IMOGEN IS PRODUCING WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAIN ACROSS NORTHEASTERN QUEENSLAND. Weather Situation: At 4am AEST, Ex-Tropical cyclone Imogen was located approximately 60 kilometres east-northeast of Georgetown. Ex-Imogen is forecast to track slowly east-southeast towards the southern North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, and Herbert and Lower Burdekin districts during today and then potentially become slow-moving just inland from the coast later today into Wednesday. A trough extends from ex-Imogen eastward through the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands to the south of Innisfail and is forecast to slowly move southward during Tuesday. The heaviest rainfall is currently occurring on the eastern flank of the low into the middle and lower parts of the Herbert River Valley, although rainfall rates have not been especially large over the past 6 hours. Potential remains in place for widespread heavier rainfall to develop through the the warning area between Tully and Townsville in the next six hours and then extend southeastward to about Ayr during the remainder Tuesday. Areas of heavy rain may also redevelop north of Tully to the Babinda area later today. Six hourly rainfall totals between 150 mm to 200 mm are possible. Periods of localised INTENSE RAINFALL leading to LIFE THREATENING FLASH FLOODING with six hourly totals of 300 mm about the coast and ranges in the warning area are also possible. The tropical low over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria may develop into a tropical cyclone on Monday morning as it moves to the east southeast and approaches the southeast Gulf coast. Areas affected: Warning zone: None. Watch zone: NT/Qld Border to Pormpuraaw. Cancelled zones: None. Details of Tropical Low at 4:00 am AEST: Intensity: tropical low, sustained winds near the centre of 55 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 85 kilometres per hour. Location: within 30 kilometres of 15.8 degrees South, 138.5 degrees East , 100 kilometres north northeast of NT/Qld Border and 120 kilometres northwest of Mornington Island . Movement: southeast at 12 kilometres per hour . The tropical low is expected to continue moving to the east southeast across the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. The environment over this area will continue to support the strengthening of the low, as long as it remains over open water, and the system may develop into a tropical cyclone on Monday morning as it approaches the southeast Gulf coast.
