17.01.2022 Please DON'T throw gas bottles in your rubbish bin! It should go without saying ... but it's suspected a pressurised gas canister caused this rubbish truck f...ire in Kwinana yesterday. As firefighters from across Perth were busy battling the massive Wooroloo fire, they also had to attend this incident in Bertram after the contents of the truck began smouldering during the routine rubbish collection route. The City of Kwinana says the driver was forced to dump the truck's contents on to a residential street to stop the truck from exploding into flames. They say these types of fires are occurring more frequently in recent years, with causes generally being: Lithium or alkaline batteries that ark when electrodes come into contact with conductive materials or are broken under the weight of the contents of the truck. Gas canisters and aerosols can cause fires as the remnants of the contents are extremely flammable and the cans are easily damaged by impacts which can cause fires. Household and other chemicals disposed into bins mix the contents and other chemicals in the collection vehicle causing reactions that can cause fire. People are urged not to deposit dangerous goods in their bins Most councils offer hazardous and electrical waste drop off points. Another rubbish truck fire happened in Ballajura yesterday also. The driver managed to steer the truck to an empty carpark before it went up in flames. Firefighters are investigating the cause. City of Kwinana
