25.01.2022 This week I had an emergency call to a rain soaked switchboard on one of our wettest nights in Perth. The rain was leaking in through the roof and entering the switch panel. This is a friendly reminder to make sure your gutters are clear of leaf debris, the leaf litter inside the gutter was stopping the flow of water down the drainpipes and it was pooling in the gutters. Water is very cunning and will find its way out wherever it can, in this case it found an exit through the electrical panel. Fortunately the switch panel had RCD breakers installed and the worst that happened was that the RCDs tripped and power was cut through the house. EC# 11705
24.01.2022 Here's another set of lights (LED of course) we installed, we do so much more than lights, but who want to see pretty pictures of smoke alarms or switchboards?
24.01.2022 When did you last talk with the family about what you are going to do in the event that your smoke alarm starts to sound? Have you organised an escape route? Do you know the best way to get out of a smoke filled room? Who will help children or the elderly in escaping? If you live in a bush fire risk area have you prepared an action plan?... Does everyone know not go back into a burning building? Smoke alarms are arguably the most important safety device in the home, its purpose is to warn you of any smoke (FIRE) in the building and allow you time to respond to the smoke and evacuate. A mains powered smoke alarm will have 2 small LED lights on them, a green one that is lit whenever the mains power is connected, there is also a second LED, a red one, this will flash once every minute or so to show that the battery is good. They can detect anything from burned toast to electrical fires Do you have any fitted? Do you test them regularly? Have you removed the battery because it keeps chirping? If you dont have any fitted Mains powered are the best for peace of mind, organise an electrician to assess your individual situation and make recommendations. Testing a smoke alarm regularly requires a simple push of the test button once a month, thats it, job done rest easy for a month. IMPORTANT For those of you who have removed the battery your smoke alarm is now just a ceiling ornament, a smoke alarm is only any good if it is going to make a noise and alert everyone you care about when there is smoke. 24.01.2022 We received our electricity bill yesterday, as Ive mentioned to some of my customers, this is an ideal reminder to go out and check that your RCDs work. First shut down anything that could be damaged from a power cut, computers, routers etc. then go out and press the test button on your RCD, this button is usually marked with a "T" the switch should trigger instantly, then push the switch back up and you know that all is well. There are 2 reasons to do this test, firstly to make sure that it actually trips when it should, secondly to stop the switch from getting stiff or gummed up with dust. EC# 11705
23.01.2022 Do you know how to spot a cowboy electrician? There are plenty of television programmes that feature people who have had a bad experience with a tradie and to be fair most individuals like myself just want to do a great job at a fair price. Alarm bells should ring if a person is unable to show you relevant documents, a great place to start is to ask for their EC number which means they are government registered and don't forget public liability insurance. That way if they dam...age anything, you are covered. Look out for these cheap shots from gun slingers and walk away in fact run away! - Unrealistic quotes, decide immediately or the offer is gone - No references - No registration or public liability insurance - Asking for money upfront or cashies Cowboy electrician use scare tactics to convince you to do work whilst they are there. Also dropping an already cheap price to attempt to secure the work adding on extras once they've started, doing a shonky job, then vanishing when there is an issue. Any reputable electrician will never pressure you into anything and often needs to work the best price out for you with a proper quotation in writing. You should know exactly what you are getting for your money including the brand of the hardware being used. It's OK to be on a budget we are a family business who knows all about bills, however don't be fooled by the promises of the cowboy! Please Share EC 11705 www.electricianwa.com.au
22.01.2022 Well it's happened, the neighbours have put up their Christmas lights and awesome they look too! If you want to look extra fabulous this Christmas take tips from some of our customers who have fitted an extra plug point or two for lamp placement, downlights for that glossy magazine mood lighting or a chandelier or two for all out wow! Think about installing a plug point where you always wanted to put the Christmas tree instead of the only corner the cord will reach! 22.01.2022 We went to fit a smoke alarm the other day to find a live cable in someones roofspace that had been taped up with aluminium foil. This could have tripped the RCD or the circuit breaker or given an electric shock / caused a fire. Taping wires is a bodge and an alarm bell in an insurance claim or house sale as to the overall state of the electrical system. DIY on electrics is not only illegal its also dangerous. Wires should always be terminated correctly or removed. EC# 11705

19.01.2022 Today Im going to publish a warning, if that GPO seems loose, then there is a problem, it might be that the screws need tightening up, in which case its a simple fix. It might be that one of the mounting pillars has broken in which case it will mean swapping out the GPO, again a relatively simple fix. it could also be a sign that there is more danger than is not apparent such as the job I called at this week. This particular one was about as bad as it got, one of the mounti...ng posts had snapped, the other one was held in by a wood screw, and by pure chance, the inner part of the socket had become detached from the faceplate leaving exposed terminals, connections and busbars. The unfortunate event lead to someone getting an electric shock from touching the terminals, fortunately the house was RCD protected. So this warning is 2 fold, firstly check than your GPO socket outlets are firmly fastened to the wall. Secondly check your RCDs are working (you do have 2 right). Ill post a picture in the comments of the danger. EC# 11705

19.01.2022 Time to rid Australia of the deadly scourge of halogen down lights. Give us a call to discuss how we can change your dangerous halogen down lights to a modern crisp energy efficient LED unit. Not only are they safer, they last longer, use a fraction of the electricity of halogen and incandescent globes, you can cover the newer ones directly with insulation and there is no air gap for any warm (or cool) air that you have paid for to escape into the roof space. On top of all that, you can even choose the colour of the light. ElectricIan (WA) 0434 039 095 EC#11705
19.01.2022 Spent a little while this morning helping out the wonderful people of the Armadale Animal Shelter, a group of wonderful volunteers who spend their lives looking after local animals until they find their new homes. We spent about half of our time fixing lights and the rest of the time stroking the cats. https://www.facebook.com/ArmadaleCommunityAnimalRescueGroup/
19.01.2022 Another warning, I was doing some routine work inside a meter cabinet and noticed some discolouration of a circuit breaker housing, Experience has shown me that when something doesn't look right, there is always a reason for it. Check out the comments for what I found inside.... EC# 11705

16.01.2022 With the cold weather, if you're using an electric blanket, make sure at the very least you look it over before you use it. you need to look for cables that have been kinked, chewed or corroded. Make sure the cables are not discoloured or brittle. Look at the fibres of the blanket make sure they are not frayed or worn. Look out for any fold marks (instructions state you should not store the blanket folded) first time you use it run your hand over the blanket for any spots that are particularly warm. Temperature differences indicate element problems. Check the blanket controller (if it has one) make sure it hasn't got any burn marks near the cable entry points also that the plastic hasn't discoloured, this is an indication of overheating. 14.01.2022 Well the sun is starting to come back to Perth so don't forget the suncream to protect yourselves from the damaging effects of U.V. Here's what we found around the back of someone's house, this cable was in direct sunlight and you can see that the sun has shown no mercy to the cable. The outer cable has disintegrated and the earth cable has started to perish. The moral of this story is that if you have exposed cable, you need to get it checked at the very least then either protected or replaced and protected from damaging U.V. EC# 11705
13.01.2022 Just a reminder to check your light fittings for water, especially as the wet weather is starting. I've just been to a leaking roof where the water was dripping on to a light fitting. EC# 11705

13.01.2022 There's been some bad luck today with lightning striking houses and creating expensive repair bills for the occupants, fortunately for most people this is an incredibly rare event. Whilst there is very little you can do to stop lightning hitting your house, there is something you could do to stop the effects of lightning if it were to hit close by (more common).A lightning strike within a few kilometres can cause dangerous voltage spikes to your home power supply that's why p...eople always say you should unplug your electronics when a storm is coming. A simple device fitted into your fusebox will activate if it senses a higher voltage than normal coming down the line. what happens next will protect your household electrics especially the more susceptible ones like your computer or TV / HiFi. The surge protector automatically throws a switch withing nanoseconds (several billionths of a second) to pass all of the power to earth through your ground rod. The great thing about this device is that it costs less to fit than you average insurance policy excess, but that's not all, if the device activates and protects your devices and your home, then there's no inconvenience in having to sort out your replacement goods, no increase in insurance prices for having made a claim and all of your data will be protected on your hard drives, although a back up is always advised anyway. Give us a call and see how much it will cost to fit your home electrics with a surge protector. www.electricianwa.com.au EC# 11705
12.01.2022 When an electrician replaces fuse wire in a rewire-able fuse, the use of only one strand of wire is very important. Fuse wire is designed to work in a very specific way which is to melt when the temperature of the wire reaches a certain point, this is to protect the copper wiring of the house. The manufacturers work out the resistance of the wire strand and determine what current is required to blow the fuse. If the fuse is rewired with more than one strand, the calculation...s will be wrong and the current flowing in the wire might not be enough to melt the wire before it causes damage to the house wiring, or even worse possibly a fire. Do take the time to do safety checks, especially if you have any rewire-able fuses in your switch box. If you are unsure in any way please contact Electric Ian (WA) we are always happy to help and advise. EC# 11705

08.01.2022 Coming soon (2 days to go) - April 1st is Smoke alarm day, this is the day you treat your smoke alarm to a new battery, even mains powered smoke alarms have backup batteries in them for the odd occasion when you lose power, so even they need a new battery. Buy a GOOD 9v PP3 battery, don't try and save a couple of dollars for something that is so important. Please like and share this post so we can get the word spread and remember smoke alarms are great lifesavers when they're working. EC11705
07.01.2022 Hey Folks, happy new year to you all. I had a couple of emergency call outs this holiday season, including one was to a fire damaged property, so this is a remi...nder to check your smoke alarms, a simple press of the test button will sound the siren (will also sound others in the house if they're interconnected). Do this for each smoke alarm in the house, it only takes a minute of your time. While you're in maintenance mode, test your RCDs as well, first make sure your computers are shutdown properly to avoid loss of any documents or information that might be open, then go to the meter box and press each of the RCDs "T" buttons. If they don't switch off, they are not working. Testing them ensures they are working and keeps the mechanism from getting gummed up through lack of movement. Feel free to share this post to get as many people as possible to check their safety devices. EC# 11705 See more

03.01.2022 Well spring is here in Perth and with that comes the warmer weather. With the warmer weather comes a warning: UV rays are as damaging to electrical cables as to our skin. Any cables that need protecting should be installed in UV resistant plastic conduits. Have a look and make sure you don't have any cables directly exposed to the sun. Also check the plastic conduit, a tell tale sign is that the plastic exposed to the sun will start to fade in colour.
03.01.2022 RCDs: Do you know what it is? I posted a couple of months ago about people testing their RCDs, there is a very good reason for this. A circuit breaker is designed to protect the wiring if there is a fault somewhere in the circuit. Could be at a power outlet, light socket or an appliance that is hard wired into your system. An RCD is there to protect your life. It works like this: electricity flows in a circuit, what goes down the active wire has to return via the neutral wire..., if it doesn't flow in equal amounts, then there is a leakage of current out of the circuit. An RCD is designed to detect that leakage of current and shut off the power hopefully before someone touches the point of leakage. Occasionally a person may become that point of leakage and the RCD will trip fast enough that the only effect will be a tingle. Have you ever opened up your switch panel and noticed how dusty it can be in there, well just imagine the dust finding its way into your RCD switch, that same dust can have an effect on your switch and in some cases can stop it working, this is why you need to check that your RCD works, make sure you don't have a computer running, if you do, save and backup anything you would be sad if you lost, then PRESS THE BUTTON. An electrician can test if the RCD is working fast enough, but you can check that it is working, the life you save could be your own. EC# 11705
