13.01.2022 A few weeks back I came across a series of posts on the Sunderland History and Memories Facebook Group of photos of the Doxford Engine Works probably taken in t...he 1950s or 1960s. Doxford made the well-respected Doxford opposed piston diesel engines. The photos were probably taken for the company for promotional purposes. I have chosen a selection that illustrate the scale of the production process, and the range of skills of the workers. The firm William Doxford and Sons shipbuilders and engineers had its origins in 1840 when William Doxford snr began building wooden ships at Cox Green on the upper reaches of the River Wear. The shipyard moved to Pallion, Sunderland in 1857. They built their first iron vessel in 1864. In 1878 Doxford added a works for steam marine engines and boilers. 1892 saw the launch of the Turret, the first of their distinctive turret ship designs which successfully exploited a loophole in the way dues were calculated for ships in certain trades. Between 1905 and 1907 the yard had the highest production of any shipyard in the world. 1910 was to see Doxford commence development of its own marine oil engine. The first experimental engine was completed in 1912 and in 1913 their first opposed piston engine was built. Owing to WW1 it was not until 1919 that Doxfords made available their first commercial opposed piston engine. The company suffered from the collapse of shipping in the 1920s, closing in 1924 but reopening in 1927. By the end of 1920s there were six other firms with licenses to build Doxford diesel engines, four British and two overseas. The yard again closed in 1931 owing to the Depression, but the company persisted with designing an economical motor ship. The first ship built to the Doxford Economy Tramp design as it became known was the Sutherland launched in December 1934. She was followed by 30 other vessels. In 1938 an improved Doxford Economy Tramp design was developed and 85 of these vessels were built during WW2 and up to 1954. Between 1946 and 1966 the Pallion Yard of Doxford completed 123 ships. The Doxford 3-cylinder opposed piston oil engine was licensed around the world and was one of the most popular large marine diesel engines of its time. In 1966 the tanker North Sands was fitted with a large 9-cylinder Doxford "J" oil engine of 30,000 bhp, the first of its type. The last Doxford oil engine was installed on the bulker Canadian Pioneer in 1980. While on the topic of marine diesel manufacturers, I recently visited the site of the former Eriksberg Mekaniske Verkstad in Gothenburg. They produced the Burmeister and Wain diesels under license and were a direct competitor to Doxford. The Eriksberg shipyard site has been redeveloped, but they have retained two very large engine halls, adapted now for use as a hotel and conference centre. Both buildings retain elements of the heavy gantry cranes that were used for erecting the giant engines. They also have half models of ships built by the company on display as well as original engine builder’s plates. Other monuments retained to commemorate the shipyard include a quaint large wooden administration building that is now another hotel and the massive gantry crane over the former building dry dock which is one of the landmarks of the city and still proudly displays the name Eriksberg. Having seen the high esteem that the people of Gothenburg have given to its former shipbuilding heritage, I can only reflect with regret what has happened, and what continues to happen, in Sunderland. The Sunderland Council has appointed a firm to demolish the last remaining building reflecting the glory days of Doxford and Sunderland’s shipbuilding heritage The Doxford Western Gateway. Representations are being made to Historic England to review the status of the Doxford Western Gateway as a matter of urgency. The more voices of concerned citizens and observers, the louder the cry to save the building will be. Please add your voices by email to Historic England at [email protected]. and [email protected] Acknowledgements: David Alcock for his posts Grace's Guide at https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/William_Doxford_and_Sons
