23.01.2022 I'll try to relate this to something that I can more readily comprehend rather than the huge figures like distance and size found on most internet sites. I hope I have this right! Imagine if all the nebulae were represented by all the buildings on Earth with the Lagoon Nebula standing like a tall apartment block. Right next door (about a 1000 light years away from each other) lies the Trifid Nebula shown here. In the top left hand corner of the image you can see part of the L...agoon Nebula. It's estimated to be a mere 300000 years old. The nebula’s name means divided into three lobes, and refers to the object consisting of three types of nebulae and an open star cluster. The open cluster is surrounded by an emission nebula, a reflection nebula, and a dark nebula within the emission nebula that gives M20 the trifurcated appearance for which it is known. 22.01.2022 I don't think I've shared this photo on Facebook before, but this has been a favourite of mine, and the recognition is pretty encouraging!

20.01.2022 This is my entry in the B&W category for the 2020 Australian Photographer of the Year. The competition requires a small portfolio of 4 images that tell a story. I'd be interested to know if a story unfolds for you, and will share my thoughts soon. The title I've given this is, "Behind the Fences".

17.01.2022 Last night I decided to do something a little different and took the Leica m10 Monochrom camera out on the front porch, pointed toward the Milky Way and took this single image. ISO 1600, 8 second exposure, in camera noise reduction, some post processing in Lightroom. #leica_world #leica_photos #astrophotography #saggitarius #nightphotography

15.01.2022 IC 4703 is the diffuse emission nebula or HII region associated with Messier 16, which is actually a cluster of stars. It is the nebulous region surrounding Messier 16. These two objects make up the Eagle Nebula. I need to obtain more data and become more familiar with Photoshop to improve this image!

12.01.2022 Judging by the serial number this Rolleiflex SL66 camera was made in January of 1967. I was 12 years old then when my father would allow me to use his box brownie from time to time. A few years later I had my own camera - a Kodak instamatic. I remember shooting rolls of film, taking them to the local chemist, and waiting with great anticipation for the prints to arrive. They were mostly rubbish. There is something about using film rather than digital technology that remains magical and I’ve missed. So today I purchased this camera. It takes me back to fond memories of my childhood and will give me the opportunity to capture new memories without so many rubbish photos.

08.01.2022 Improved image of the eagle nebula. Thanks to Steven Morris.
07.01.2022 The Lagoon Nebula (M8) is a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation of Sagittarius. It lies about 4000 light years away from us. At the centre of the nebula a monster young star 200,000 times brighter than our sun is blasting powerful ultraviolet radiation and hurricane like stellar winds, carving out a fantasy landscape of ridges, cavities and mountains of gas and dust. 05.01.2022 M104 - Sombrero Galaxy About 30% of the size of the Milky Way and just over 31 million light years away lies this lenticular galaxy in the constellation of Virgo. With a thick dust lane around its centre is thought to be home to a massive black hole.

03.01.2022 Sunday night (19th July 2020). Another attempt of M16, the Eagle Nebula, though it looks more like a dove to me. Might be a while before I post astro photos again as I wait for some new equipment to arrive. 30x180sec lights 30x180sec darks When you see the wispy glow of this nebula through an astronomical telescope or binoculars, you are witnessing a stellar object that is approximately 7000 light-years away.... The newborn stars in the Eagle Nebula are very hot, which illuminate M16’s hydrogen gas as seen in the Pillars of Creation, made famous by the Hubble Space Telescope. These intense pillars are slowly evaporating under the intense glare of the nearby massive, newborn stars. The Pillars of Creation appear relatively small within the nebula itself, but in actuality, they are larger than our entire solar system.
02.01.2022 I was fortunate to have three consecutive nights of good viewing this week. Last night I spent about six hours in a chilly local park, capturing 936mb of data to enable me to develop this image of NGC5139, also known as the Omega Cluster. In 250AD, the Greco-Roma writer and astronomer Ptolemy, catalogued the Omega Cluster as a star. We now know it's a globular cluster containing an estimated 10 million stars making it the most massive globular cluster in the Milky Way. It's 1...5800 light years from Earth and about 12 billion years old! 01.01.2022 NGC6334 Commonly known as the Cat's Paw Nebula. 3262 light years from Earth and like most nebulae consists mostly of hydrogen and helium.
