24.01.2022 When you start with the assumption that birth is a problem from which to be rescued you can never support a physiological birth well. Support birth as a normal process AAmidwifery.com

22.01.2022 Yesterday was the beginning of National Child Protection week. The aim of the week is to engage members of the community in supporting families and protecting c...hildren. Today, were sharing an important resource from Play Your Part - a tip sheet that shows how you can better support children and young people in the community. The community is an important safe harbour for families - and helps them feel supported to navigate lifes choppy waters.

21.01.2022 I'd include a few more books on this list that did not save anyone's sleep!

19.01.2022 Prepare for your fourth trimester too.

19.01.2022 Often, when a birth doesnt go to plan, well intentioned people will spout the line "at least you and your baby are healthy". Regardless of what happened during labour or immediate postpartum, of what medications were used, or how the baby was pulled from its mothers body. Regardless of the terrible things that were said to manipulate, coerce and bully, or how they were separated after birth, or the obstetric violence that occurred - at least theyre healthy. ... Is two heartbeats the best we can hope for? The World Health Organisation defines health as "A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Yet for many, this isnt what a "healthy" birth looks like. As a doula, I believe my clients have the right to be respected. To have their mental and social needs met as well as their physical needs. To be safe. To be more than a file of paperwork pushed through a system. To be trusted to make decisions that are right for them and their family. If you believe this too, Id love to work with your family as your birth doula. Everything that is happening in this image is amazing. My eyes keep going to each piece in it take it all in! Image and words by @thebirthbutler A F T E R B I R T H In case you didnt already guess, I love birth and everything surrounding it. But some of my favorite elements to capture are fresh postpartum scenes. All the minutia that make it whole: The towels to keep transition warm, The popsicle, fed to mother by dad, to replenish energy, The water cup, retired after having kept the last leg of labor going, The babe smothered in white, sticky vernix, The placenta being examined by gentle hands and curious eyes, And my favorite piece, the Blood, which nourished the womb for months and is now expelled. Every story looks different, and not every story is peaceful, but it is all beautiful in its own rite. How was your postpartum story similar or different from this? . . . . #lochia #stopcensoringmotherhood #fourthtrimesterbodiesproject #midwifery #adelaidedoula #birthcenterbirth #healthymumhealthybaby #birthsupport #doula

18.01.2022 With all the conversation around birth rights, it seems timely to re-share this reminder that, in our modern world, weve developed standards and pathways and g...uidelines which guide the health care that is offered in systems. But the standard path wont be the best way for everyone and you might not think its the right one for you. Dont forget that standards and guidelines are created so that bureaucratic systems can run smoothly. They are only an offer and its ok to say, thats not right for me. 07.01.2022 Are you worried that your baby can't breathe because their nose is smooshed into your breast? The great thing is, their faces are exactly designed to be able to... have a smooshed nose and still breastfeed! The suck, swallow, breathe coordination that they do can only happen if they have an unrestricted airway. So even if it appears that they can't breathe, if they are breastfeeding...they are breathing! :) See more

07.01.2022 POSTNATAL NUTRITION After birth your body needs to recover, no matter how your baby was born. And if you are breastfeeding then you are still growing and nurturing a baby, just on the outside of your body! Traditional postnatal foods are warm, soupy, nutritious and easy to digest, no matter which culture. Perfect to help your body heal and recover. ... When I cook for clients, these are the types of foods I like to prepare fresh for them. This coconut chicken curry contains a number of nutritious ingredients. Bone broth and chicken with the skin on - supply collagen-building amino acids (glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline) - all key to healing tissues that have been stretched, torn or cut. Ghee and coconut cream - you need some fats to help keep you full, help you absorb fat-soluble vitamins and they can help enrich your breastmilk. Soft cooked vegetables are easy to digest and a good source of vitamins and minerals. Home grown leafy greens contain vitamin K, fibre and B-vitamins to name a few nutrients. Well cooked sweet potatoes help provide energy and stabilise your blood sugar levels. This recipe is my own and the nutritional information comes from Lily Nichols. 05.01.2022 At least your baby is alive is the most bullshit phrase ever uttered. At least your baby is alive suggests that a baby and woman who are alive represent the... top rung of the ladder when it comes to birth outcomes. Ive got news for you, its the BOTTOM one! A live woman and baby is the minimum expectation of maternity care, the bottom rung! Not the top rung! The ultimate expectation of maternity care is that the woman and her family are completely blissed out and satisfied with their birth experience, they are blown away with joy and elation at what they just did and they feel autonomous and respected. A joyful birth is the standard, a live woman and baby is simply and expectation. #birthtraumaawarenessweek #birthtrauma #transformativebirthwork See more

03.01.2022 RASBERRY LEAF TEA Have you heard about taking this supplement or drinking it as a tea to tone your uterus? Shorten or induce labour? Have a look at the evidence available on the subject and see what you think. Does it change your mind?... To sum it up "there is very little research on human consumption of red raspberry leaf during pregnancy. Some people have reported side effects with the use of raspberry leaf, such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, but these are commonly reported during pregnancy. And its not known if they can be attributed to the raspberry leaf. The use of raspberry leaf was linked to an increase in cesarean in one retrospective study. However, the study was very limited by the fact that it only included 34 people who used raspberry leaves during pregnancy. Neither the single randomized trial on this topic nor the retrospective study by Parsons found any statistically significant results with regards to any outcomes of interest." https://evidencebasedbirth.com/ebb-139-red-raspberry-leaf-/

02.01.2022 A lot of women tell me that part of their birth trauma occurred when they felt like they werent listened to or had their choices respected. They are often left feeling like a mere incubator, second to the well-being of their baby. Alone in a room full of people, not fully present or involved in the birth of their child. And this isnt the way it should be. Unfortunately, if you choose to birth within the system then you need to be prepared to stand up for yourself, your c...hoices and your human rights. This is part of what I teach my doula clients. It is a sad fact, that the opportunity for true informed consent is rarely given to women these days. Instead their is often blatant ignorance of legal rights, bullying, coercion and abuse. This free resource is for everybody. You are welcome to share it with anyone you know who may be giving birth soon.
