20.01.2022 Tomorrow is The Pivot's Global Community Session to share perspectives about adult Highland Dancing. A two hour zoom session for dancers and teachers from across the world to candidly discuss, debate and brain storm together what is great about Highland Dancing for adults, and what could be the future for adults in this beloved dance form by sharing, listening, and consolidating great ideas and actions together. This session will also generate a public paper to be shared wi...dely as a starting point or the fuel for momentum in this important space in Highland dancing. It you would like to better understand tomorrow's session (and the importance of your contribution to it!), please take a few minutes to review the link of the paper that was published following a previous global community session held in conjunction with the Highland. 17.01.2022 Gosh, if I get one more invite to set my new goals for 2021 I think I am going to explode! Don't get me wrong, there is so much good intention in the idea of turning to a new page at the start of the new year and refocusing on what is important and where to be heading. The truth is though, goal setting can feel heavy, hollow or false when the drive to set goals is not coming from within... or more seriously, when your previous experience with setting goals is a memory of ...what it felt like when you DIDN'T achieve them. Not making the podium or presentation can be such a devastating feeling when you have worked so hard, as is having a class full of dancers who are flat and listless after a competition which is challenging for teachers who have been trying to keep the competition environment one that is positive and constructive for their dancer's long term development. I was in a goal setting and mindset session myself last week with the fabulous Lisa Carpenter (check her out at https://lisacarpenter.ca) and we had this fantastic conversation about her advice 'be committed to the goal, NOT attached to the outcome'. This had such resonance for me because I truly BELIEVE that we are all better off aiming high and really committing our life and our efforts to achieving excellence or our 'true north' dream. Yes, there is a fair chance that you may not fully achieve it, however you are ALWAYS further ahead having aimed high. Be committed to the goal, not attached to the outcome. This leads so beautifully into our session tomorrow (Sunday 17 Jan, 10am ACDT) in The Pivot: Home for adult Highland Dancers and Teachers. Our resident Sports Psychologist extraordinaire Emma will be taking us through the practical process and applied skills of how to set, measure and achieve your goals in Highland Dancing. You don't have to be setting goals RIGHT NOW if it doesn't feel right for you, however I think there is so much opportunity in Highland for us to learn HOW to set goals that actually lead us on a journey of improvement and positive progress that make the commitment to those goals worthwhile in your greater life as well as your dancing experiences. 06.01.2022 This is so powerful for us to consider in the Highland world. Firstly as dancers striving to be better, but also as teachers in the way we communicate corrections and suggestions for improvement. As individuals we need to think about ‘what we are making things mean’ when something negative triggers us. As a teacher we should also be regularly checking what our dancers are hearing and understanding when we give them constructive feedback. ... We can all choose what we focus on.

03.01.2022 No matter what 2020 has thrown at us, as we step into 2021 together we are working to build new bonds, connect across continents and validate each other in the world of Highland Dancing. Happy New Year!

On 31 December I felt 1000 miles away from Highland, and then by mid-morning on 1 January I feel enthused, passionate and focused on my goals and dreams for 2021!
