20.01.2022 Ultimate Mobility Sequence series 3 - Coach Joe Standing wall thoracic smash.... Helps improve - stiff and angry traps - stiff rhomboids - restore scapula motion Cues: Place physio ball inbetween the scapula and spine targeting the upper/lower traps and rhomboids. Place your back against a firm wall and apply small pressure to the ball. Cross your arms in a self hugging position so that the scapula protracts and allows the ball to move more freely around those targeted areas. Start to get a feel for how much or little pressure you apply then continue to move up and down creating different points of contact with the ball. Key points: This exercise works really well for tight muscles mmaintain the upper back region. In my experience these muscle groups are very commonly tight and can be associated with poor posture and lack of awareness. Common examples would be from the daily grind of a 9-5 deskbound office job. The body overtime will mold and turn our posture and muscles into a non optimal state which can lead to many trips to the physio. $$$ Start to take control of your body before your body takes control of you. Keep it simple, keep moving and keep training. Don't fall into the trap of poor body positioning. Yoga Styles: Slow Vinyasa flow: A slow Vinyasa class maintains the structure of a vinyasa class with a reduction in tempo. This class offers a slower pace with a few longer holds. Vinyasa flow: A Vinyasa class is a breath and movement practice. In this class you will get a dynamic flow that strengthens and stretches the body. Hatha: A Hatha class is a traditional and gentle class. In this class you will learn the foundations to the classical postures of yoga. Restorative: A Restorative class offer a form of ‘active relaxation’. This class involves the use of yoga props to create supported variations of the classical yoga postures. Helps improve - Hamstring ROM - Hip Extension - Knee flexion - Hip, back and knee pain Cues: Wrap the band around the leg high up into the groin/hip region, proceed to walk forward and create tension. Keep your belly tight, back and leg straight then hinge forward from your hips until you reach your hamstring end range. Extend yourself back up into a upright position then repeat the steps of bending forward and centering the weight over your heels. The method in this skill is called "flossing" Flossing refers to movement, working with a band and mobilizing within full range of motion. Flossing is a great tool for prep / loaded and dynamic movements. Example preparation for deadlifts . Place your feet in a sit up position, you can elevate pressure by driving your heels into the ground and lift your hips up off the ground. (Best to experiment with what level of pressure works for you. ) 3. Begin with the side the ball is on and place your hand on opposite hip. Next perform a shoulder raise ( shoulder flexion ) and keep your arm and wrist in a external position with the aim of touching the floor with your thumb. Repeat motion with the arm. Do this for 1 - 2 min each side. Key notes. As much as keeping your shoulder mobile and healthy we also need to think about our ribs and spine because they also play a huge roll in the joint mechanics system. 03.01.2022 Ultimate Mobility Sequence series 5 - Coach Joe Banded Lat mobilization ... Helps improve: - overhead positioning - external rotation Cues: Anchor your band in a high position and wrap your hand around it. (Doggy lead grip) Take a few steps back and build tension through the band. Keep your palm facing up so that our arm/shoulder is in a external rotated position. Place your other hand on top of your banded hand then begin to lean back into a hip hinge position. Target the lat and little external rotation muscles in the back of your shoulder. (Hunt around for the sweet spots) You can contract and relax within this position and rotate in and out with the arm for more a ballistic stretch rather than a constant hold. 1-2min each side. Key points: Why is external rotation important to have ? Our body natural loves externally rotating rather than being internally rotated. (Zombie pose) External rotation in our joints let's us become more primed and optimal during our lifts. It will generate more torque and power output. I will touch more on this topic in a later post so stay tuned for that. It is important to mobilize areas you lack, Its even more important to mobilize in the position of the area you lack in. If you have trouble with an overhead position and you want to improve it, then simply spend more time in the overhead position whilst mobilizing the tissues surrounding. Time under tension and working in the end ranges of positions will help much more than mindlessly trying to hold a generic crossed arm shoulder stretch which they teach you in school.
