25.01.2022 Puns, dirtbikes, honesty, real talk What to expect from a conversation or appointment with me If you can't handle dad jokes and puns then check out another dietitian because puns and I are a packaged deal. I literally have minimal control over it ... Dirtbikes are featuring more because I love them and the nutritional considerations are epic I will be honest with you. If I don't know the answer I won't pretend to know. I stay within my scope of practice and refer on accordingly. I'll also tell you where there's room for improvement, that's my job I am down to Earth and real. There's no faking it here. This is me and I am unapologetic for being myself It's been great using instagram for appointments, I love that you already know my style and areas I am passionate about before we even have that first G'day What do you value in a health care professional See more

23.01.2022 Do not compare your eating to anyone else's You do you Over the years I have seen the most interesting dietary intakes... No two eating plans are the same, yet both can achieve optimal health So please don't be swayed by what others a doing We have the Eat for Health dietary guidelines that can be manipulated to suit individual needs, that is why I like them so much You could have 5 people eating the exact same number of serves per food group yet they can be eating entirely different foods for example 2 fruit might be an apple and banana for Joe Bloggs or a pear and a punnet of blueberries for Mrs Soenso Embrace individuality and diversity and remember you can be healthy without eating any fang dangled foods that your idol or mate might be phasing on Simply you can't compare apples and oranges See more

23.01.2022 TRUTH BOMB You're a dietitian, how many calories are in this? I wouldn't have a clue mate... Calories mean nothing to me these days. When I was working in the hospital and a patient was being enterally fed, then yes I worked with kilojoules In a community setting I rarely talk calorie targets. I've never seen it change behaviour in fact I see quite the opposite What I do see work are small changes made over longer times that are sustainable and achievable Weight loss occurs from an energy deficit (see my blog). This can be achieved with food or exercise or both Reducing calories leads to weight loss regardless of the method chosen (keto, carb cutting, fat reduction blah blah) But Can it be maintained? Will you count calories for the rest of your life? It is labour intensive and not always accurate And then we are comparing it to our energy requirements, how have you worked those out may I ask? That is an estimate at the very best So calories count, but you don't have to count them Exercise--consult with a professional Eat well - consult with a dietitian Keep up your incidental activity and don't be a couch potato Make small sustainable changes and reduce what will count the most (soft drink, alcohol, takeaways, biscuits, lollies, large portions, excessive snacking, mindless eating or non hungry eating........ I could go on and on) I tried calorie counting for a day, I didn't make it past breakfast I know in some circumstances it is a fantastic tool What is your experience with calorie counting @ Denmark, Western Australia See more

22.01.2022 Vegetarian or vegan? meat free Monday warrior? Or do you eat meat every day? either way I have a recipe for you : 4 cups of cut up veggies (I used capsicum, carrot, brocollini, spring onion, zucchini and red onion) rice noodles ... garlic ginger sliced chicken OR Tofu I added sesame oil to a hot wok (less oil is used compared to a cold wok) and added the onion, garlic and ginger. Once they were soft, I added in all the veggies at once. Don't overcook the veggies, pull them off the heat and set aside Fry up the chicken or tofu and set this aside. Add back into the wok the veggies, the chicken or tofu and toss through the rice noodles For the sauce I added a splash of fish sauce, a dash of soy sauce, a squeeze of fresh lemon and about 1/2 tsp of Chinese 5 spice You could add some crushed peanuts and coriander on top after serving For my local followers I used @thousand_miles_tofu and I am impressed to say the least. Buy local to get the best quality and least food miles. I chose to cook the tofu this way as my first taste of a new product so I could truly experience it for what it is. Check out @thousand_miles_tofu for far fancier recipes. I am so excited to try more ways with tofu, it is such a versatile non-meat protein @ Denmark, Western Australia See more

21.01.2022 Throwback to when I had 2 healthy collarbones I am off for surgery this Thursday, I am unsure when I will be taking on new clients, but I will be around for questions here as needed. I may or may not need a bone graft but need to make sure this bone heals This is the beach I stacked it on, not overly excited to ride there anytime soon but I am hoping to get back to full function as soon as possible... I think sometimes we take health for granted. This injury has opened my eyes, to those suffering chronic illness or pain I feel for you. For those who are able to make changes to improve your health, do it Seek help if you need it Our health is just too important Wish me luck!!

20.01.2022 "But it's not what I see, it's what you see" - Cool Runnings See the strength in yourself Dig deep, put aside the negative self-talk and acknowledge your strengths ... Body image is nothing to do with how we look, but everything to do with our we think and feel about ourselves and our body (our perception) Body dissatisfaction is a top ranked issue for youth every year yet body image is something we can change, just like our eating and exercise habits it takes practise and consistency My 5 quick tips to improve the way you think and feel about yourself include: 1) Check your socials, are you following people that role model healthy behaviour and body positivity? 2) Change the way you think of your body and incorporate gratitude for example if you have legs (gratitude) what can they do? walk, run, skip, hop, dance, chase.... 3) Decrease the negative self talk and replace with positivity for example instead of saying "I feel fat" change this to "I am not feeling my best today, what can I do to feel better? a walk, read a book, make a cuppa, have sex, sing, call a friend, zoom... 4) Be comfortable with the uncomfortable and recognise your flaws, we all have them and that's what makes us so diverse and interesting. My Aunty used to say a face without freckles is like a night without stars. I would like less freckles but hey that's me and I love me so I shrug it off and say come on freckles let's go kick a footy 5) Set health focussed goals, check out my blog for more info on nutrition focused goals At this very moment can you say 2 to 5 positive things about yourself? write them down. If you can't then maybe body image is something you could work on? The Butterfly Foundation and Headspace are an excellent place to start @thebutterflyfoundation @headspace See more

18.01.2022 ...It's how often or how much of something that we eat which determines it's effect on our health... Eating chocolate is not bad for us. Eating it everyday in large amounts may start to negatively impact on our weight or cholesterol or risk of diabetes... The relationship we have with food needs to be positive using positive terminology similar to that of positive self-talk. You will never hear me mention the word clean eating or words such as "bad" "treat" "naughty" or "I feel so guilty..." I believe in "everyday" foods and "sometimes" foods. Foods which should be eaten daily (fruit, veggies, dairy...) and foods to have sometimes and in small amounts (chips, cake, ice-cream...) I teach my children this and I avoid diets and diet lingo like clean eating, keto, skinny or superfood It isn't all about nutrition knowledge, behaviour change forms a huge basis of my workload Would you like to know more? 15.01.2022 Oh you're a dietitian, why are you eating that? You wouldn't believe it but dietitians know a bucket load about food. Perhaps because of this we fear nothing Well, fear no foods anyway ... A healthy relationship with food and our body is a core value of mine Have you ever considered whether you have a healthy relationship with food? And I don't mean cheat meals or roses with dinner Can you? Eat a wide variety of foods Eat with friends and family and find joy in social eating Think of all foods as acceptable to eat knowing it's how much or how often you eat a food that makes the difference, not a one-off eating occurance Stop eating when you are no longer hungry Say no to food if you aren't hungry and don't truly want it If you can't say yes to many of these maybe we should touch base? What else can you think of that shows a healthy relationship with food? Photo credit @ashleighneeds_

14.01.2022 Small business truths I'm walking around my house tidying, feeding the kids, planning a work out with no creche, and thinking about this post. I started this business as covid hit. #clever lol... A prominent sports dietitian and role model suggested that I seriously think about what I want to do. So, in typical Kel fashion I continued to pursue my goals. 10 years ago as a new grad I would get so angry at the misinformation spread about nutrition. My hubby used to say "tell them or post something". I rarely did. Now, I have my platform to spread evidenced based nutrition info. The relentless spread of misinformation will always be around. Everyone eats food, so it's a highly opinionated area. That's cool. Dietitians know more than just the ins and outs of food. We are taught food science, counselling, communication, public health, biochemistry, chemistry, human biology, research and epidemiology, medical nutrition therapy........ over a 4 year uni degree. So, yes I get frustrated when someone does 1 unit of nutrition and is instantly an expert. But, now I use my frustration energy on spreading quality info in posts, in stories, in my new book or face-to-face. That makes me happy. Is small business hard? Without a doubt!! Is it tricky balancing 2 young children, a business, my hubbys business and life? You betcha!!! Have I had people de-value my profession and work? Absolutely. Do I doubt myself constantly? Sadly, yes Do I regret anything? No way Every like and comment you give me encourages me to write the next post. Yesterday, my discount code didn't work (because I'm still green i guess) Do you know what he said? Don't worry about it, put it towards writing the next book. That's what keeps me going. All my supporters. All of you THANK YOU ! Who votes I do another giveaway? All in favour say I

08.01.2022 Homemade choc milk Local footy, rugby and rowing champ @lukeybrods says chocolate milk is a serious part of his recovery nutrition post exercise He joins many an athlete, with the benefits of milk as a recovery option being pretty legendairy, specifically:... Carbohydrate replenishment Protein for repair and muscle growth Electrolytes and fluid for rehydration Calcium for bones and teeth As you may know I am nearly finished my ebook on nutrition for dirtbikers which includes multiple recipes This is my latest recipe addition to my ebook. Here it is for you now: 250 ml Hilo milk 1 large tbsp cocoa 1/2 tbsp brown sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon Ice Add the cocoa, cinnamon and sugar to a glass. Add a small amount of boiling water and mix into a thick paste. Gradually, while stirring, add the milk. Add the ice. Enjoy!! This provides 8.5 g protein, top it up with a high protein snack or meal to bring it up to 20-30 g In comparison to big name chocolate milks it's quite similar. The biggest difference is size, drinking 250 ml compared to 600 ml will obviously be less of everything. My recipe has more fibre, close to 4 g from the cocoa and cinnamon, that's a bonus!! Mine does not taste sweet, it has that homemade taste about it. You could try adding protein powders, I personally don't use them but it's an option to try, perhaps start at 1/2 a scoop to bring it up to 20 g HBV protein Comment below if you love choc milk.

05.01.2022 Overnight oats I've had a lot of feedback on my overnight oats story. Here is the final product and recipe The video is on my "cooking" stories highlight- check it out... Base overnight oats recipe 1/2 cup whole rolled oats 1/2 cup milk 1/4 cup Greek natural yoghurt 1 T chia seeds Heavy splash of vanilla essence Add all ingredients into a cup and refrigerate. So easy Add any extras you like, I added mixed frozen berries, sunflower and pepita seeds and a small drizzle of honey If you need higher protein you could add a protein powder or more nuts and yoghurt but its pretty high as it is with about 20 g and that's before adding seeds Nutritional breakdown of base recipe per serve: Carbs 52 g Fibre 11 g Protein 20 g Fat 24 g What an absolute cracker of a pre- or post- workout/competition snack What would you add to yours? @ Denmark, Western Australia See more
