11.01.2022 WHY SHOULD A HORSE LEARN TO BEND AROUND THE INSIDE LEG? We could just be ok that our horse keeps going straight, no? Do you know those riding lessons where the... teacher yells at you "Inside leg! Outside rein!" ? And you really don't get why. Why should you pull on the outside rein and drive with the inside leg to make the horse turn? It was a big mystery for me when I was taking lessons as a teen. So, here is the deal - and this is especially important to understand when educating a young horse. Because this hugely affects the horses emotional and physical well being. By nature horses will throw their weight on the inside shoulder and look to the outside when turning. They will also do this when riding. And there is the problem. Because with the rider on the back, this leads to a huge loss of balance. Maybe you know that feeling of riding a motorbike when actually you are riding your horse around a turn. This stresses the horses joints, doesn't feel good for the horse. Many horses start rushing and bracing as a result. By teaching the effect of the inside leg to a young horse, we can help the horse out of this dilemma. How is the horse supposed to respond to the aid of the inside leg? - activate the inside hindleg of the horse - therefore step further under his center of gravity - this causes the horse to bend (together with the outside rein) - shift the weight from the inside shoulder towards the outside shoulder. Sounds quite complex..... it is. As soon as riders are asked to "bend their horse!" we tend to start fiddling with our reins. This doesn't only block the horse from going forward, but the result usually doesn't involve the whole body - just the neck. Teach your horse to yield sideways off your leg and you will be able to teach your horse to bend around your inside leg correctly. Chic is out of primary school and he is learning this concept right now. Like all young horses, he is falling quite a bit on his inside shoulder, causing him to loose balance. Through the following steps, I taught him how to bend around turns and on circles: - on the ground I taught him to yield sideways from steady pressure at the area of the stirrup bar - I taught him to yield sideways on a circle around me (on the ground) - Next I taught him to yield sideways along a fence when riding - Then he learnt to alternate between walking straight and yielding sideways while working on a circle. Now he starts to understand that he can just bend through the whole body while walking on a circle. Leg and Seat aids are always more important than the rein aids. And with young horses we need to take the time to explain them in detail so that they can understand.

03.01.2022 ~Jennifer here~ I'm going to speak from the heart right now. We at SAHA are all suffering as we search for OUR horse "Lily-Rae".... We rescued this girl from the dogger pens in 2016. She was emaciated and had her foal taken from her at the sales, and was suffering a severe urinary tract infection. We fed her, gave her the medical attention she needed, and slowly brought her back to health. In 2018 she was adopted into a home which at the time SAHA thought might be a suitable person. We were wrong. And now this person who had a strict signed adoption agreement has breached that contract and 'disposed' of our horse. We are desperately trying to locate Lily-Rae. She is a very distinct Appaloosa, and somebody must know something? Our hope is that Lily-Rae has found herself in a good home, and if she is well cared for then we would be very open to adopting her to the person who currently has her. But we MUST know if she is ok right now. We try so hard to rescue/rehabilitate/rehome. We adopt our horses with the agreement in writing that if the person who adopts can no longer keep our horse, then it MUST return to us. This is our promise to that horse that they will never know starvation or neglect again. They are safe under SAHA's umbrella for life......till someone does the wrong thing. All day, all night, I stress about where Lily-Rae is, and whether she is ok, and I know the rest of the committee and staff feel the same. We love our horses. We really love our horses and it hurts so much to not know where our girl is. Since this is now a police matter, and an investigation is underway, there are details I cannot share, but I just wanted to let everyone know that whoever has her now....is not in trouble, but they have to realise that they have stolen property, as Lilly-Rae is microchipped to us and remains our horse for the rest of her life. So again please we ask you....do you know where she is? Can you come forward if you have her? Can you alert us if you know who does have her? They are probably unaware of Lily-Rae's past, and don't even know that our charity actually owns her. Shame on the person who has breached the contract, she was not theirs to sell or give away, and she was loved by us.
