25.01.2022 This photo says more than any words could. I see the difference on a daily basis of clients I used to greet with a warm hug good morning still reaching out with open arms. Only to be reminded that we must keep our distance to ensure the health and safety of each other and the world around us. So instead I make them smile in other ways...A compliment on their hair that morning, a funny story about my children or photos from my garden. And I reassure them that one day when the world heals, I have been counting up all the missed hugs and I will pay them back in full!

23.01.2022 Reducing the impact of loneliness If you're on the phone to an older relative and things are a bit awkward or you run out of things to say, Dr Parkinson and her colleagues at Central Queensland University suggest: Recount a story of success of one of the grandchildren; Retell the plot of a recent film/television show;... Tell a joke (don't know any? Find some online); Read a passage from a novel, a poem or prayer that may be meaningful to them, or song lyrics (again, all easily found on the internet); And for those who are unable to be visited (for example, older relatives in aged care), don't forget about writing letters! You can also get in touch with the facility your family member resides in and ask if emails can be printed and read out to them. See more

22.01.2022 Random fact for you....On this day in 1924 Toastmasters international was formed. How is this relevant? I visit an elderly gentleman every Wednesday, and have done so for the last 3 years. He was sole carer for his wife of 60 years until her passing last year. When I started doing services for this lovely couple it was to enable the husband to continue his weekly Toastmasters meeting, not just for a little respite, but to continue participating in a hobby that he was pass...ionate about and enjoyed immensely. Being a full time carer can lead to physical and mental strain. By encouraging carers to continue to enjoy the hobbies and pastimes that they loved before they became carers will help to instill a sense of self worth, and promote mental well-being. Social interactions away from the care environment can lower stress levels, and give the carer an opportunity to relax. If you are a carer, or know someone who is, encourage them to take time out! #caringforyouathome #carer #toastmastersinternational See more

22.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

21.01.2022 It may seem that I am posting a lot about diabetes today, but I can not stress enough the importance of diagnosis and treatment. Having myself had a form of diabetes I know the health implacations and effect imposed on the body and its organs, if left untreated.

19.01.2022 Today is R U OK? day. Such a simple question can make a difference in the lives of those around us. Sharing, listening and observing can save lives. Whether it be someone in your care or someone devoting their life to care. Three little words is all it takes. Take a moment today to either ask the question or share and create awareness. #ruok #caringforyouathome #eliteagedcare

18.01.2022 At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month at...tained a special significance in the post-war years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war. This first modern world conflict had brought about the mobilisation of over 70 million people and left between 9 and 13 million dead, perhaps as many as one-third of them with no known grave. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead. On the first anniversary of the armistice in 1919 two minutes' silence was instituted as part of the main commemorative ceremony at the new Cenotaph in London. The silence was proposed by Australian journalist Edward Honey, who was working in Fleet Street. At about the same time, a South African statesman made a similar proposal to the British Cabinet, which endorsed it. King George V personally requested all the people of the British Empire to suspend normal activities for two minutes on the hour of the armistice "which stayed the worldwide carnage of the four preceding years and marked the victory of Right and Freedom". The two minutes' silence was popularly adopted and it became a central feature of commemorations on Armistice Day. Credit: Australian War Memorial www.awm.gov.au

17.01.2022 Today is Valentines Day, a day to celebrate not only the love that we have in our own lives but also that which we see around us. Working within the community I witness on a daily basis the meaning of true love and that indeed it holds no bounds. There are husbands who now dedicate their lives to the care of their wives that no longer remember what day it is. There are wives who continue to love honour and cherish even though their husbands have asked the same question for... the last 2 hours straight. There are widows who share their stories of a love so great, the pain of reliving the story of their loss is overcome by the beauty within the tale of true love. I am lucky enough to have my own love story. A story which will one day be shared as I listen to those I care for. 10.01.2022 I think this sums up why so many people become carers. I know myself, I find it an honour and a privilege to care and support the elderly within our community. But it isn't just about working within the aged care sector, it's calling your loved ones, taking the time to talk, helping a stranger carry their groceries. It can be simple gestures as well as full time caring. #caringforyouathome #carer #agedcare

09.01.2022 Let's start our Monday with a smile! No matter who you are or how you have aged, never give up doing what you love. Life is to be lived so dance like no one is watching!

08.01.2022 Good Morning followers! I found this article on Twitter this morning. Reading through it I found myself thinking that I encounter these emotions on a very regular basis talking to live in carers. They are fortunate enough to have aged care workers visit regularly to whom they can express their feelings and air their emotions. But that isn't always the case. Do you know a carer who may need to talk? Are you yourself a carer in need of a sympathetic ear? #caringforyouathome #agedcare #carer senior.com/understanding-difficult-emotions-behind-caregiv/

03.01.2022 On a weekly basis I am scheduled to transport one of my clients to a childcare centre for the morning. I can not put into words the joy I witness as she interacts with the children and in turn, their happiness with her presence. This is an untapped wealth of social interaction as she has dementia and many of the adults within her community are lost in their conversations or even how to approach her. The children we see have no knowledge or pre conceived idea regarding the... disease, their energy and playfulness cross any boundaries or awkward communications. The service is the highlight of my week and I can not speak highly enough of the childcare centre who have opened their doors and welcomed us so whole heartedly. #agedcare #childcare #dementia #eliteagedcarehs #caringforyouathome https://mobile.abc.net.au//aged-care-residents-b/10951100

But it is time to get back into the swing of things and start sharing with you all again! Please keep liking, sharing and commenting on our posts so that I know I am reaching you. I will leave you today with one of my holiday snaps. We took a road trip to central N.S.W and stayed with relatives on their sheep station. While the scenery looked green the drought is still in full force, creek beds are dry and dams are empty.
