19.01.2022 One of the biggest challenges facing many business owners, including myself, is how they prioritize and spend their energy. Note that I say energy and not time. Time is something that we get to interact with. We do not get to control it, or manage it. We do get to control our energy. When it comes to physical energy, it’s one of the first things to go when it comes to running a business. When things get busy, we think that one day here or there not doing exercise, not ...taking care of our physical health, will not be the end of the world. If you are in professional services, like we are, it’s as important as when you are in a physical job to keep your energy up. Just so happens I go to a really cool place, where they combine physical and mindset at the same time. 18.01.2022 So I set out this morning for my daily early morning run. It was a bit overcast. But it was a nice cool change from the hot humid weather that we’ve been having lately. About 10 minutes in, it started raining. So I turned and headed for home. By the time I got home, I was absolutely drenched. And as I stood under the awning at my front door, I paused with my hand on the handle. As much as I wanted to go inside and enjoy a nice warm shower, I thought no, I’ve made a commitm...ent. Even though that commitment was to myself and no one would know that I quit, I’m not letting a bit of rain stand in my way. So I headed off yet again. As I left home and rounded the corner, for the second time this morning, I looked up and saw the most stunning rainbow. I would never have seen that rainbow if I had stayed at home. I realize this is a metaphor for business and for life. Sometimes the conditions are not ideal. Sometimes you feel uncomfortable. But when you keep persisting and keep going, you will be rewarded. 14.01.2022 RESPONSIBILITY BEFORE PERKS Habit # 5 - Eat Last There is temptation everywhere, and business is definitely no exception.... Let's use an example of winning a big national contract. The biggest win for your business so far. What do you do next?! Do you buy a new Merc AMG? Or maybe it's big enough that you splurge and finally get that Ferrari or Lambo you've always wanted. I mean, this is a big win right?! Well, what's the reward system in your company? Do you even have one? Assuming you do, how are you acknowledging and rewarding your teams input to winning the contract? And do you have different rewards for different departments that is directly linked to each of their respective major goals and its accomplishment? Most importantly, are you rewarding your team FIRST? And what about the business... what percentage of the win are you allocating, not only to deliver the contract but, for re-investment back into the business to position for even bigger wins. I'm not saying don't buy the Ferrari or Lambo... hell, I know I will be! I'll simply be taking care of my team and my business before rewarding myself. This is what responsibility before perks means. As we make the intentional choice to "eat last", then we are making it abundantly clear to our team, and everyone else, that they matter more that a new toy.
