25.01.2022 6. Lighting & Electrical - Deck season brings late nights; this means more parties and get-togethers. When we spend more time outdoors, especially at night, you need adequate lighting to maintain a reasonable level of safety. Therefore, it’s crucial to have working lights available so you can keep the entertaining going all night long. - Cleaning lights is a way to brighten up your space quickly. Chances are your deck hasn’t seen much traffic in months, which means you proba...bly have lots of dust, dirt and grime on the fixtures. Refer to your owner’s manual for the best course of action for cleaning any light fixtures. - Make sure all existing lighting is in working order. It’s been a while since you’ve used your deck, so there is the possibility that plants or trees have taken over. Trim these up as necessary as they may be blocking essential light. - One extremely important point is to check all the electrical outlets. Check your local building codes and see if your outlets are up to date. If children are going to be present, the outlets MUST be childproof. Clean the outlets if necessary, and make sure they’re waterproof. You never know what the summer can bring. - If you have to use electrical extension cords, first make sure they are approved for outdoor use. Safely secure them and keep them out of the way of high traffic areas and children. - If you don’t have adequate lighting on your deck and walkways, it’s important you install some. there are a lot of great new deck lighting products you could consider illuminating your handrails, steps and pathways. Not only does this add safety, but it allows you to enjoy your outdoor space as long as you’d like. - If you are unsure about how to install lighting, don’t do anything until you contact a local licensed contractor/electrician who is familiar with outdoor electrical installation. Barbeques, Firepits, Chimneys, heaters, and Candles. - These features can create a warm and cosy deck atmosphere, but make sure any source of fire or heat is safely placed away from flammable surfaces and is protected by a non-flammable pad. - Always use caution and follow the manufactures’ instructions. Heat sources can often lead to discolouration on your timber. If heat sources are not properly monitored your timber deck can get unbearably hot and in severe cases, cause... fire with objects around. Outdoor firepits and fireplaces - As these products are becoming more popular among outdoor entertaining, it is very important to be aware of your outdoor space. - Making sure that the firepit or fireplace is appropriate for your outdoor area. ie. Not too close to other fixtures or furnishings, To be aware of children and animals around the object. That the ground in which it is placed is level and has appropriate fire rating. - If you choose for a wood burning firepit or fireplace. Always be mindful on where you are storing your firewood. You do not want to store too close to the firepit/place as it creates a fire hazard. This guide shows you some of the simple things you can do at the start of each season to protect and restore your furniture so that you can enjoy it for years to come. - Test all outdoor furniture to be sure it is sturdy. Avoid placing seating right at edge of the deck. if you have swing or hammock installed, test the chains and ropes to be sure they are secure. ...Consider installing childproof latches on any storage boxes and benches. - Be sure to keep all deck related chemical products stored safely away from children,BBQ lighter fluids, matches, cleaners, etc - The easiest way to look after your outdoor furniture is to cover them so that they are protected them from the wind, rain and sun. There are covers specifically designed for tables, patio heaters and umbrellas. If you don’t have one of these, covering your outdoor furniture with a tarpaulin will also protect them from the elements. - An easy way to look after your wooden furniture and make it look great is to lightly sand it back and then apply an oil or stain to help protect it. There are a range of different colours and finishes to choose from. If you do this regularly, it won’t take long each time you do it. This will not only protect your wooden tables and chairs but also keep them looking new. - A simple way to protect the pillows and cushions for your chairs and outdoor furniture is to keep them undercover when the winter weather and rain arrives.
