03.01.2022 We have some great garden ideas to keep you sane while at home below is a step by step guide to help you create your own veggie patch! For us, we are using this time at home to create a gorgeous veggie garden, we can be self sufficient with our food and its a great activity to get the kids involved with too! CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOCATION ... Choose a location for the garden that has plenty of sun, ample space and close proximity to your hose or water source. Find a level area to help prevent erosion. SELECT YOUR VEGGIES Decide what produce your family uses most and what grows well in our climate! Finding seeds can be hard at the moment (we usually use Eden Seeds) but I have been collecting our seeds from our vegetables as we use them - just don't forget to dry them out first! PREPARE THE SOIL Water your ideal spot to get your soil ready to mix compost and natural fertilisers into your garden to condition the soil for your plants. PLANT THE SEEDS Place your seeds or plants into the soil, following the depth and spacing directions carefully. Add veggies such as garlic and shallots to keep the nasty bugs away - we are also lining the veggie garden with Marigolds, they look beautiful and the scent deters bugs too! ADD H20 Gently spray the garden with water to keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season. Purchase a spray nozzle for your hose so you can create a gentle rain-like mist for your garden. KEEP THE WEEDS OUT We find Mulching is the most effective way to prevent weeds. Add a 2- to 4-inch-thick layer of organic mulch to your garden to keep the weeds from overtaking your crops. If weeds do appear in the garden, be vigilant to extract the entire root. GIVE YOUR PLANTS ROOM TO GROW Check the spacing guide on the seed packets and be sure to remove crowded seedlings right away. FERTILISE AS NEEDED Lightly till the soil by hand and add fertiliser to keep it rich. You can purchase prepared garden fertiliser or make your own from items like Epsom salt, eggshells, kitchen compost, fish tank water and kitchen compost. REAP WHAT YOU SOW Harvest vegetables when theyre young and tenderand pick them when you plan to use them. Root crops should come out as soon as they reach edible size. Finally, enjoy your harvest! 02.01.2022 Growing a pineapple from a top is super easy and they grow so well in our climate! STEP 1 - First, you cut off the crown (that's the spiky top) The stem needs to be bare, dry and clean. STEP 2 - All you need to do is let it dry for a day or two before planting.... STEP 3 - Remove all the bottom leaves and any dead leaves. STEP 4 - Fill a pot with soil, or find a nice sunny spot in your garden. STEP 5 - Make a hole big enough for the pineapple top and plant it. STEP 6 - Pineapples don't need much water, once the fruit starts to bear is the ideal time to start watering more. They have very tough leaves so they don't lose much water through evaporation. Its as easy as that! The hard part is patience! Once you plant your pineapple it will take some time to grow so patience is in order but it makes it very exciting once you start seeing your baby pineapples appear!
