13.01.2022 ------Flexibility Fridays----- Flexibility is not something you're born with! Most people think they have stiff joints or muscles, but just moving and stretching will go a long way! (Obviously, arthritis^ and other conditions will give you a harder time, but movement has been shown to help*) So what if you're completely new? No worries, start with full body stretches, and gradually increase the time and frequency of the exercises.... 1. Touch the Sky Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Exhale, and reach towards the sky. Hold for 5-8sec x 3. 2. Body Side Stretch Stand with feet shoulder width apart, place one hand on hip, and raise the other straight up. Exhale and side bend. Hold for 5-8sec x 3. As with all our exercises, start small, and build up, do them throughout the day! Don't stretch suddenly or until it pinches, always gently move into position until you feel a good stretch. Looking for more? At Elite Performance Chiro, we're always looking to give you a personalised checkup and "tune-up", book an appointment on (07) 4633 0992. ^Physical Activity and Arthritis: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/art.10909/full *If trying any of these exercises feel excessively uncomfortable, or you have an existing condition, please see us, or your local GP before continuing.

09.01.2022 ----Flexibility Fridays---- Stretching throughout the day is great to keep you moving, and can even wake you up out of that 3pm slump! Here are some great stretches to do after sitting for a while.... 1. Neck Stretch (Upper Trapezius, Levator Scapulae, Scalenes) Hold onto the sides of your chair, and sit up tall. Side bend your neck, until you feel a stretch on the 'open' side. Make sure not to raise your shoulders. Hold for 10secx5 each side. 2. Bottom Muscles Stretch (Piriformis and Glutes) Sit with one knee crossed over the other. Sit tall, and place one hand on the upper knee. Lean forward from your hips, keeping your back straight, and pushing down on the upper knee until you feel a stretch in that bottom. Hold 10secx5 each side. 3. Hamstring stretch Stand with one heel on the seat of the chair. Point that toe toward your body. Stand tall, and lean forward from your hips, reaching for the foot on the seat, until you feel a stretch in that hamstring (back of your upper leg). Hold 10secx5 each side. 4. Quadriceps Stretch Stand holding the back of the chair. Bend one knee and raise that foot towards your bottom, and use your hand to hold it, until you feel a stretch in your quadriceps (front of thigh, upper leg). Hold 10secx5 each side. 5. Shoulder and Upper Back Stretch (Pecs, Trapezius, Latissimus Dorsi, Teres Major, upper Thorasics spine) Stand holding the back of the chair. Bend foward from your hips, keeping your back straight, until you feel a stretch in the shoulders and upper back. You may need to move your feet backwards, so your hips are at 90 degrees. Hold 10secx5 each side. Remember to feel the stretch, it shouldn't be a pinching or tearing sensation! You may use these throughout your day, and increase your sets if you feel comfortable. If you have an existing condition or injury, please see us before doing these exercises. Looking for more? Come see us at Elite Performance Chiropractic, Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre. Call now on 07 4633 0992, and talk to our friends at QLD Discount Vitamins to book an appointment with us.

06.01.2022 ------Men’s Health Week - 15-21 June 2015------ Some facts from Men’s Health Information and Resource Centre, University of Western Sydney:... Australian males: - are less inclined than women to take an active role in maintaining their own health, and receive far fewer health messages than women - are also less likely to seek professional help for problems - men may feel that it is a sign of weakness to seek help; some males, particularly younger men, tend to act as if they are invulnerable - are more likely to get sick from serious health problems than women, often due to a lack of early intervention. --------------What can you do?--------------- Take charge of your health. Get to know your body, and if something is different, get it checked out! Learn to make healthy lifestyle choices that will last a lifetime, and not rash decisions. 02.01.2022 A reminder that it's National Diabetes Week, July 12-18. Some of the myths being covered: ----You can’t get type 1 diabetes if you’re an adult.----... The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is not yet known, but we do know it has a strong family link and cannot be prevented. We also know that it has nothing to do with lifestyle, although maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important in helping to manage type 1 diabetes. ----Type 2 diabetes is caused from eating too much sugar.---- While there is no single cause of type 2 diabetes, there are well-established risk factors. Some risk factors can be controlled and others you are born with. You are at a higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes if you: - have a family history of diabetes - are older (over 55 years of age ) - the risk increases as we age - are over 45 years of age and are overweight - are over 45 years of age and have high blood pressure - are over 35 years of age and are from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background - are over 35 years of age and are from Pacific Island, Indian subcontinent or Chinese cultural background - are a woman who has given birth to a child over 4.5 kgs (9 lbs), or had gestational diabetes when pregnant, or had a condition known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/
