17.01.2022 Vulvodynia is defined as: pain of the vulva in general that has been there for 3 months or more with no identifiable cause. ‘Vulvodynia’ is not a diagnosis, it’s a symptom. It’s like saying you have back pain......there should be more to this story that gives a more specific diagnosis to help guide treatment. . Vulvodynia can be subdivided into Unprovoked generalised Vulvodynia and Provoked Vestibulodynia (PVD). Unprovoked generalised vulvodynia usually involves pain through...out the Vulvar region, this could be the labia majora and minora, the clitoris, perineum, mons pubis and inner thighs (see diagram). The pain can be constant or come and go and is not necessarily initiated by touch or pressure. Provoked Vestibulodynia (PVD) is pain to the vulvar vestibule (see diagram) when touched or pressure is applied such as during intercourse, inserting tampons, wearing tight clothing. There can be redness to the area also but not always present. The area of pain is usually from 4 ‘o’ clock to 8 ‘o’ clock on the introitus (pink highlighted area on diagram). . PVD can be primary which is if you’ve had pain ever since first attempt of intercourse, or it can be secondary when it occurs after a period of pain free vaginal penetration. . It’s important to distinguish between the two as it can help identify a cause or trigger. . Vulva conditions commonly go misdiagnosed and in my experience not many women know their anatomy well enough to be able to clearly communicate where exactly their problem is. (See recent post on anatomy) Know your anatomy and be confident in getting the right help and care for your vulva- she deserves it! #vulva #vulvadynia #provokedvestibulodynia #vulvapain #womenshealthcare #pelvicfloorphysio

11.01.2022 Happy Australian Mother’s Day to my far far away Scottish Mum! We were meant to be together on this day but hopefully next year flights will be back up and running and we’ll be reunited! . It’s not until I’ve had a child of my own I’ve fully appreciated and been aware of all that you have sacrificed and done for us. Thank-you for being the best Mum for us 3 and best Gigi xxx #mothersday

05.01.2022 Firstly thanks @vulvalalala for your image. . Leading on from previous Vulva pain posts, another reason for vulva pain could be dermatoses of the vulva which can often be mistaken for thrush or fungal infections so it’s important to have an awareness of the signs and symptoms. . Lichens Simplex Chronicus, Lichen Sclerosus and Lichen Planus are all skin disorders of the vulva.... . Lichen Simplex often begins from something rubbing the skin such as clothing or using irritants such as soaps causing you to scratch the skin which results in thickening of the skin. Symptoms include: itching May have other skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis Looks a bit like eczema. . Lichens Sclerosus is an inflammatory dermatosis of the skin, usually occurs in Peri-menopause although not limited to. Female:male ratio of 10:1. We currently don’t know why it occurs but think it might be related to autoimmune disorders. Symptoms include: white plaques and pain on and around the vulva. skin becomes thin. labia minora may disappear. scar tissue can cause narrowing to the entrance of the vagina. . Lichens Planus is a dermatological condition involving skin, nails and mouth. Again cause is unknown. Symptoms include: gradual onset of symptoms. skin lesions on legs, torso, inner wrist or genitals. can result in fusion of vaginal walls. . If you have any of these symptoms your GP can refer you to a dermatologist and gynaecologist specialised in vulvar dermatoses. . Treatment usually includes topical creams (corticosteroids) to help with itching. And irritants such as soaps should be avoided. . You may also be referred to a #pelvicfloorphysio who can help with education, pain management, relaxation and breath work, dilators and help with returning to intercourse. . I also recommend reaching out to others who are happy to share their story so you know you’re not alone. @vulvalcancerukawareness, @lichensclerosusuk and @eveappeal have lots of informative posts. . @wellbeing.by.penny is another one I love to follow, she shares her journey of pelvic pain in such a positive and real light. #vulvadermatitis #lichensclerosus #womenshealthcare #vulvacare #womenshealthphysio See more

03.01.2022 Pregnancy: 40 +\- weeks to prepare for the biggest marathon you may ever do in your life-birth! . The process of labour it’s self is a very active event, and just like you would train for a sporting event to perform better, you can train for labour to improve your performance there too! . If that wasn’t enough of a reason to exercise during pregnancy here are some others:... . it releases endorphins that make you feel good. it helps avoid excessive weight gain. it can help keep your bowels regular- constipation is a common symptom of pregnancy. movement can help with aches and pains you might be getting from changes in posture. strength training can help prepare you for your new role as a Mumma- the lifting and carrying of your new bub in often awkward positions! cardiovascular training can help improve your cardiovascular endurance- something you need for the high demand of birth! . Seek medical advice if you’re experiencing excessive nausea, pain, incontinence, dizziness or headaches. Your obstetrician, GP or #pelvicfloorphysio will be able to guide you safely. #pregnancy #exerciseinpregnancy #pregnant_world #womenshealthphysio #prepare #preparetobirth #birth #labour See more
