21.01.2022 You can call it sustainable fashion or you can just call it Aboriginal design. These words are from designer Alison Paige, quoted by @yatuwiddershunt in her recent interview with Frankie. In the article Yatu, who is the powerhouse behind the @ausindigenousfashion Instagram account, and Director of Cox Inall Ridgeway, an Aboriginal PR, and social change agency, speaks about how Aboriginal fashion and sustainability are intrinsically linked, saying "It’s s...omething we’re born with a cultural obligation to do: tread lightly on the earth, care for Country and care for our communities." We couldn't agree more, Indigenous designers have been at the forefront of sustainable fashion long before it became a "movement" and was embraced by the broader community. You only have to look at the ethos of brands like @MAARACollective who make beautiful high-end resort wear but whose very name acknowledges and honours the ‘many hands’ involved in the creative and collaborative processes. Or the vibrant @liandraswim where each limited edition piece is made ethically from sustainable fabrics. Yatu goes on to point out "Collections from some Aboriginal brands may be delivered at certain times of the year, because that’s when materials are available. There may be smaller runs because we’re mindful of the resources we’re using to create them. I think the broader Australian fashion community has a lot to learn about sustainability from Indigenous designers because it’s something we’ve been practicing for tens of thousands of years."
