21.01.2022 #OnThisDay in 1942 the Japanese began their attack on Ambon, in what is today Indonesia. Australia's 'Gull Force', along with some 2,600 Dutch troops fought in ...defence of Ambon but were unable to defeat the Japanese invasion of the island. Nearly three quarters of the defenders would die in captivity before the island was liberated. 21.01.2022 In late January 1945 the Sandakan death marches began in Borneo. After the fall of Singapore and the Japanese advance across South-East Asia and the Pacific, i...n 1942 the Japanese established prisoner of war camp at Sandakan in North Borneo. In 1945 with the Allies advancing towards Borneo, the Japanese decided to force the emaciated Australian and British prisoners, in three separate marches, through rugged jungle interior to the village of Ranau, some 260 km away. The Sandakan death march remains the greatest single atrocity committed against Australians in war. Of the 2,500 Australian and British prisoners of war sent to Sandakan on Borneo’s north-east coast during the Second World War, only six men all Australians survived. The Sandakan Memorial, made in 2005, is a sculpture commissioned by the Australian War Memorial to acknowledge and remember those who died during the Sandakan death marches. 20.01.2022 #Onthisday in 1967 Major Peter J Badcoe was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for a series of actions in South Vietnam between February and April 1967. Th...ese extraordinary feats included: rescuing an American advisor; while under fire he attacked across open ground; he captured a machine-gun; he led attacks; and he provided leadership and an example to wavering troops. On the day he died, Peter wrote to his wife Denise: It’s time I came home. I'm getting bitter and cynical I can see more and more good about the Vietnamese and less and less about the US advisers. On April 7, upon hearing that there was some difficulty near the hamlet of An Thuan, Peter drove out to assist. He arrived to find that the force had fallen back, so he took charge and rallied the men in the face of withering fire. After several attempts to silence a machine-gun, Peter was shot and killed instantly by a burst of enemy fire as he rose to throw a grenade. Peter Badcoe had been an inspiration to his Australian, Vietnamese, and American comrades-in-arms. Attendance at his memorial service in Hue was the largest that could be recalled for any allied soldier. Peter was commemorated in a Last Post Ceremony that can be viewed here: http://ow.ly/BBuK50z1Hsz Image: Major Badcoe at the Rifle Range, Holsworthy c 1966. 044465

Derrick, one... of the great Australian soldiers of the Second World War, seized the summit of Sattelberg virtually single-handedly, leading the way for the Australian occupation of the dominating feature. Derrick’s exploits brought him to wide public attention and he became a legendary figure in the 9th Division. When news of his death spread, in May 1945, one soldier said it was as if the whole war stopped. Read more: http://ow.ly/JN6Y50CpKGf Image: 141309

16.01.2022 John Woods Whittle was born in Tasmania on 3 August 1882. He served in the Boer War then joined the Royal Navy. After five years he returned to the army and enl...isted in the 12th Australian Infantry Battalion, AIF, in August 1915. He was sent to France and made sergeant in late 1916. Between 9 - 15 April 1917 he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions around the villages of Boursies and Lagnicourt when he collected all available men and successfully charged an enemy trench. At one point he "rushed alone across the fire-swept ground" to attack a German machine-gun crew before they could bring their gun into action. Wounded twice in 1918, Whittle returned to Australia on HMAT Medic with other Victoria Cross holders in October to take part in a recruiting drive. He was discharged in December and settled in Sydney. One of Whittle's sons, Ivan, was killed during the Second World War in New Guinea. Whittle was awarded the Victoria Cross, DCM, service medals for the Boer War and First World War, the King George V Jubilee Medal, and the King George VI Coronation Medal. 16.01.2022 #OTD in 1942 HMAS Voyager was grounded and destroyed by fire at Betano Bay in Timor. On 23 September 1942, HMAS Voyager brought the 2/4th Independent Company to... Timor to reinforce Australian troops already on the island. The ship came close in shore to land and troops were disembarking when currents caught and sunk the ship on its anchors causing her to ground. They spent the night and following morning frantically attempting to dislodge the ship but to no avail. The next day Japanese bombers attacked the ship relentlessly and the decision was made to abandon all attempts to free her. On 25 September Captain Robison, and a member of the crew, set fire to the ship, burning its remains. The Voyagers crew were later evacuated by HMAS Warrambool.
