21.01.2022 Wear professional dress I say to staff....
21.01.2022 Here is another example to add to your collection of ‘homework time wasters ‘. This teaches NOTHING. Repeat NOTHING except how to waste your child’s time and stress them out. Ridiculous. https://twitter.com/andy862/status/1341344973417979905?s=21
21.01.2022 If your child is struggling you need something different. We are Specialists in Learning Difficulties. Phone now to secure your spot. for term two
21.01.2022 Almost set to open
20.01.2022 I think this has gone way beyond the normal elf in the shelf thing now. Yesterday the elf got captured ( think Gulliver’s Travels) and today I’m not really sure if the little people are going to sacrifice him or bow down to the elf god. I think the staff are just enjoying playing with dolls now !
19.01.2022 He is back and obviously the gorilla that has been the favourite all year does not like it!
19.01.2022 https://twitter.com/dowise/status/1327549403499028483?s=21 This is important for all students to know. Good writing is a process. It’s not finished in one go. I...t’s important to teach students that editing and changing a piece of writing is normal and that they are not expected to have everything right on the first try. It’s not even sometimes a question of a word being ‘right or wrong’ but a question of a better choice of word that means the same thing. I think it’s important to teach students to explore and experiment with vocabulary and how to be creative with word choice and how it sounds in different types of sentences. This even starts at the beginning when students first learn what a sentence actually is. See more

18.01.2022 Do you know a very bright person with a high vocabulary and large fund of knowledge that seems to struggle in some areas despite many strengths? Have you heard ...of the term " stealth dyslexia" which refers to the people that fly under the radar? These are the students that look like they are reading well and may struggle with poor spelling, written expression and work completion. People may incorrectly label them as " not working to potential, smart but not motivated, should try harder, participates well in class but struggles to complete expected work, bright but lazy, we expect more, unmotivated, late bloomer, etc." These are the students that mysteriously " hit-the-wall" in grade 4, middle school, high school, college or in work life. It's really not a mystery. They were overlooked for a large range of reasons. The quiet, well-behaved, super-hard working student that spent hours upon hours doing work while missing out on real life. The outgoing, charming, full of class participation student with a smile at school and tears at home. The angry or sad student that became incorrectly labeled as " class-clown, potential juvi, mental health problem, stressed , in puberty, not academic or other unflattering terms." Quiet/Loud, Silly/Depressed, Shy/Outgoing, Perfectionist/Lazy. The behaviors are a signal of needs unmet. How do we miss so many students like this? We are not looking. The system does not care. The staff is not trained. The services don't exist until total failure occurs. We don't take a " prevention" approach. We are under-staffed. We say " other kids are worse." We assume that being able to read a book of high interest means the child can read across the curriculum. Wealthy kids get private tutoring to keep up. Poor kids are ignored. Many, many reasons exist depending on your age, culture and zip code. We totally ignore poor spelling and use the very outdated " inventive spelling " belief that misses all of these students. We think that if a child can talk well in school with a high vocabulary that they should be able to express those same skills with all written work. Verbal language skills do not always translate to the same level of written expression skills. Children with a very high fund of knowledge and large vocabulary can read books while totally skipping over words and they " fill in the gaps." No one is really testing their literacy skills if they carry around books and look happy while reading. Tell us other reasons that relate to your country or culture. So many adults do not discover their learning difficulties until they have graduated from high school. Can you relate ? See more

11.01.2022 So true....those are likely to be the people who hold it together all day, and then melt down once they get home.
11.01.2022 Busy work, that really doesn't teach too much spelling, except maybe the circled box, and even then does the child actually know what the 'phonemes' in his spelling words actually are? Are the phonemes (letter sounds) actually carefully structured so that they are at the child's developmental level, and of one kind? Or are they randomly constructed, or taken from another part of the curriculum and have nothing in common?
10.01.2022 Love this little girl, at the start of the year she had no confidence and lots of anxiety about her learning. She did not know all her sounds and could barely read three letter words . Now look at her go! She has just raced forward gaining confidence with every step, we were playing TV reporters. I ‘interviewed ‘ her and she had to explain her new spelling g to the ‘viewers ‘. This is all her own words and totally unrehearsed. I’m sure she will be famous when she grows up, so I think I’ll get her autographed photo now so I can sell it when I’m in my retirement home!!

08.01.2022 Maybe, just maybe there is a hopeful wind of change blowing. So goodbye and good riddance to LLI - Fountas and Pinnell, the so-called Balanced Literacy program that has damaged so many young children and convinced them that they are dumb and can’t read . When you read this note that the F&P program has been stopped in many areas in America months ago but here in Australia certain schools proudly resist any change despite evidence and research that proves them wrong. I’ve sa...id it before and I say it again, if your child is struggling and has been put on the failed LLI program as intervention, tell your school this is not evidenced based practice and can actually make your child’s difficulties worse. Refuse to let them be a part of this program and ask what they are going to do instead that aligns with the proven evidence based teaching of reading. https://www.apmreports.org//influential-literacy-expert-lu

06.01.2022 Hopefully one more nail in the coffin of LLI and the so called balanced ( aka UNbalanced) literacy. https://www.smh.com.au//phonics-check-to-be-compulsory-as-
06.01.2022 This is a handy thing to have when discussing how your child is being taught to read. https://twitter.com/ehanford/status/1321850119139041282?s=21
05.01.2022 "What usually happens is that children have to fail to learn to read over a significant period of time before someone pays attention and says, 'this child seems to have a reading difficulty.' This 'wait to fail' approach really is detrimental to the child's academic outcome, but also for the child's mental health." Nadine Gaab Associate Professor of Pediatrics Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School... If your gut instinct is telling you in preprimary, grade 1 or grade 2 that something is not right trust it! Get help NOW. Don’t wait for them to fall into the middle grade slump. You are not being an over sensitive parent! Ring us for help.
04.01.2022 This is NOT the way to practice spelling words for any child, let alone one who is having difficulties. Just because something looks like fun to an adult, doesn't mean it is beneficial to a child. Everything you give a child to do for literacy or maths needs to be justified. There has to be a real reason why you are doing it, otherwise it is just busy work, something to keep the child busy but not learn anything, and in the case of a child with a learning difficulty like dyslexia, it will only make them even more confused. Who thinks up this rubbish?
