25.01.2022 15.5 Wicket and Craig leather. Always something different at Ellerdale Saddles, this is the first saddle/tree of this size I have made. Making a large tree than my normal, ones I needed to upscale every thing to keep them in proportion and balanced to the eye. I had the customer try the tree before I made the saddle on it - it took two tries as the first tree was too snug initially. No stamping on this saddle, just the customer’s initials on the fender and the back cantle facing was hand sewn onto the seat. I think it fits my model Ellerdale Jasper quite well - he is a 14.3hh stockhorse.
25.01.2022 Treeless Western Saddle, not a cheap saddle I was told. It looked good from the outside like a lot of saddles that use glues and screws.
25.01.2022 Back into the sawdust again - two more trees to make for more saddle orders.
23.01.2022 11" Kids Fender, the trees we make for these saddles have been scaled down to balance the saddle.
23.01.2022 I'm no longer amazed at what I find under the leather of some saddles.
22.01.2022 Old saddles are interesting work. Not a great deal has changed in the techniques used in the making 50 years ago. This one had a new seat and girth points. The old counterlining on the panel was removed with the original curled hair and serge. New serge was fitted and the panel repacked with wool flock.
21.01.2022 Wickett and Craig Medium Brown Bridle Leather with Italian Shoulder Knee Pad covers. Number 12 for 2017
21.01.2022 This one will need some major repairs.
21.01.2022 I made this saddle for Courtney (Grand daughter) about 5years ago she is now living in Adelaide so I'm now using it.
21.01.2022 This 13" saddle is off to a new home in Bangalow NSW and will most likely see a lot of Stock Horse show rings.
21.01.2022 Ellerdale Saddles Original Build - JT 13" Western Stock Just gave this one a quick clean up, it was made a while back on an Eddy Powell School by another member of the Ellerdale Saddles team, only been used a dozen times, waiting its owner to come home !!!
20.01.2022 Finally finished the repair/rebuild, taken me a while as its been a project between my original build jobs.
20.01.2022 BB 13.5 Dark Brown Herman Oak Leather with scalloped back cantle facing. Knee pads are 0.5 bigger all-round than those on my previous saddles. The lower tip of the pad has been moved forward to give more angle to the pad allowing for riders who like to ride shorter when drafting etc. Fenders still have the permanent twist, deep seat with narrow leg groove for close contact. The leather will darken more when oiled.
20.01.2022 Learning more on tree making - this time Western Stocks. This is the main direction I want to go. I want to be able to make the complete saddle and not rely on other tree makers to determine the foundations for my saddles. The tree in a Western Stock Saddle has a major influence on the fit and shape of the completed saddle. After making a lot of saw dust and fire wood, I’m finally happy enough to build a saddle on my own tree. After a lot of research I decided to cover the tr...ee with kevlar. Even though it is three times the cost of fibreglass and harder to work, it is super strong and has a degree of flex. Combined with epoxy resin and the natural fibres of the timber tree, it is easy to nail and screw and holds the shape better than composite materials. The kevlar and resin rough up well with a sander to give a good glue key. Every element of this tree is individually marked out and cut, so it can be tailored to the rider and horse from the start. 18.01.2022 This project was different from my others. I have a friend from Victoria who was interested in tree making, so he came up and spent a week learning to make a tree. We then continued on for another two weeks making a saddle on the tree. The saddle was made using Herman Oak heavy bridle leather with blue kangaroo welting. The knee pads were sewn on with a gullet fore piece and there was no stamping or carving on this saddle.

18.01.2022 Natural Hermann Oak Skirting Leather
17.01.2022 Initially I was going to replace the seat, however after a closer look I found the tree needed repairing first.
17.01.2022 Just finished six days away with Sophie and Courtney (Granddaughters)at the Grafton PC Camp and then the Bonalbo Youth Camp. Day seven my turn at Kyogle Show Stockman's Challenge.
16.01.2022 This saddle is slightly different from others I have made. I used Hermann Oak heavy bridle leather, which has a much softer feel to skirting leather. The tree in this saddle is reinforced with carbon fibre and kevlar covered. Setting the stirrup bar was a challenge - the customer rode in the traditional stockman’s chair seat, with his feet forward. He does a lot of stock work, so I moved my stirrup bar 3/4 forward for him and he was very happy with the result. Not a great lot of stamping - basket weave on the cantle facing and a small carved tulip on the fender.
16.01.2022 This saddle was built for a return customer. This time a 13 tree was used. I use leather to shape my final ground seat, giving subtle differences in each saddle. I’m now happy with my 'weltless' knee pad seam. This one is heading to Gulargambone NSW.
16.01.2022 A new challenge - a traditional stock saddle built from scratch. This saddle involved a lot more hours of work than a Western Stock, but I’m very happy with the result. Thanks to Greg Marsh for the guidance.
16.01.2022 An old favourite in for a bit of care. New seat, knee pad covers, felts, and repairs to skirts and girth. Ready for another 20 or 30 years of riding.
15.01.2022 Our local shoe repairer was showing me his in-line finisher a couple of months ago, the Sole Edge trimmer wasn't working due to the bearing failure, I offered to repair it.
15.01.2022 Pack Saddle, simple modification. This new pack saddle came with Conway buckles on most of the strapping, these buckles are hard to adjust, so I replaced them with roller buckles which should make adjusting quick and easy. Eight buckles all up!!
15.01.2022 Wicket and Craig - Mid Brown
15.01.2022 Courtney's 12" Western Stock Knee Pads are 6"x3", which are too small for me
15.01.2022 This saddle has just come in for repair. It has been sitting low on the horses back and making it sore. The panel lining was imitation sheep skin which was falling apart and had rolled into lumps. Using my flattest ROCK template it is easy to see that this tree is very flat, hardly any rock which would lead to bridging and pressure points on the horse's back. These trees are constructed from about two 3mm moulded fibre glass sections glued together to form a hollow bar. This construction maybe light but there is little or no material for screws and nails to hold to. The hollow bar had split along the bottom edge, so I had to glue them back together and reinforce this with fibreglass mat and epoxy resin before re-covering the panels with a thicker than normal 5/8"’ felt, which lifted the saddle to form a better channel.
15.01.2022 BK 13 Hermann Oak natural skirting. Inlaid seat, basket weave on cantle facing, skirts and fenders and golden sheep skin panel lining.
14.01.2022 Herman Oak - Chestnut
14.01.2022 13 Brophy moulded tree. Hermann Oak bridle leather. This saddle has a sewn in seat, sewn on knee pads with a gullet forepiece giving it close to a traditional stock saddle appearance. Cantle facing has a basket weave pattern and the fender has a simple carved tulip flower pattern.
13.01.2022 Another tree underway. This one is going to be an 11.5" tree for Sophie. I will scale down the tree to get the right size. The bars are still 22 but I will reduce the size of the knee pads and cantle to suit the smaller rider. Using carbon fibre this time in the covering, which explains the black colour instead of the yellow of the kevlar.
13.01.2022 Wickett and Craig Dark Brown Bridle Leather, rough out seat and pads.
13.01.2022 Picked up this job at Glenn Innes Camp Draft. The saddle belongs to a young 'contract musterer' - you can see by the condition that he does a lot of miles. The knee pad cover had already been replaced, so I started with the seat. I also replaced the panels and skirts and then finally the fenders. A fairly tidy result I thought. Interesting to note - I thought I needed new glasses when I removed the old seat. The seat rubber appeared to be off centre. What do you think? I couldn’t tell if the seat was off centre too as there wasn’t much left to look at!!!
13.01.2022 Herman Oak Natural Skirting, seamed in seat and cantle facing.
12.01.2022 Stock Saddle Relines, been doing Stock Saddle repairs lately. Most of them were beyond a Counter- Line as the serge had rotted and wouldn't hold a stitch, so a Reline was required.
12.01.2022 Thought I'd do a few different projects.
12.01.2022 Wicket and Craig - Brown
11.01.2022 Thought I'd make Di (wife) a pair of boots like mine.
10.01.2022 Learning how to make Stock Saddle timber and steel trees with probably the last traditional timber and steel tree maker - he's been building trees this way for 50 years.
09.01.2022 JB 13 Herman Oak Chestnut. Kevlar and carbon fibre covered hoop pine tree. After covering I used a small laser level to re-mark my centre lines etc. The colour is chestnut, which is the third colour in the Herman Oak Saddle Skirting range that I've used. It darkens a bit after oiling but is still a nice colour.
08.01.2022 Hermann Oak Chestnut Skirting 13.5" Fender heading to the Glen Innes area of NSW.
08.01.2022 This is a Cliff Killeen saddle, very nicely made on a Fouright Tree, owned by a friend who bought it second hand about 30 years ago, the seat was that worn it looked like rough out !!
08.01.2022 Herman Oak Bridle Leather
08.01.2022 Though I'd learn something new to do on a rainy day. Just another aspect of leather work.
07.01.2022 A little change in direction at Ellerdale Saddles. Courtney and Sophie (granddaughters) are keen to learn saddlery, so I made two stitching ponies, got some nice Wicket and Craig Bridle leather, some thread, needles and an awl and off they went TWO NEEDLE STITCHING using the SADDLE STITCH. They each chose their own lacing design and colours. Tthe girls did all the work on these two bridles with only a little help/guidance from Pa!!
07.01.2022 Knee pad cover repairs.
07.01.2022 Wicket and Craig Dark Brown
06.01.2022 Henry"s Bronc Saddle
06.01.2022 I suppose this is a bit of a hard way to get some time off.
06.01.2022 A well loved and used stock saddle will need a bit of work. I do these job between making new saddles.
05.01.2022 13.5 fibreglass moulded tree. Hermann Oak natural skirting leather. Basket weave on cantle facing and fenders. Fenders have the Nevada twist.
05.01.2022 JC 13.5 Herman Oak Dark Brown. Each tree is individually made so I can change any part of the tree to suit the saddle it is for. As this saddle is slightly larger than the previous one, I have increased the size of the pads and cantle to keep things in balance. The pommel is still relatively low, but still has good gullet and channel clearance.
04.01.2022 A few Ellerdale Saddles ready for work.
03.01.2022 Newcombe Stock Saddle # 1083. This saddle has I'm sure a broken tree.
