21.01.2022 Hi, my name is Elli Makrylos and this is my story as a young entrepreneur in the Northern Territory. I’m 17 years old and am currently completing year 12. Over... the past year I’ve gained a love for photography. I studied the subject in year 11 where I soon decided to make a small business for myself. I am continuing the subject this year and I’m very excited to learn new things during the course. In fact, the idea of my small business all started with a photography assignment. I got 3 of my younger cousins together and did a vintage photoshoot at the botanical gardens. It was so much fun and my cousins loved it as much as I did. I come from a very big extended family. I have 15 cousins on both sides so I never have trouble finding new faces to use in my photographs. I’ve always loved candid photography, as I like to capture real emotion in my images. I mainly photograph families, kids and even pets. I also like to incorporate my subjects hobbies or interests to really show who they are and what they love. We have a creative bug in our family, my mum is a make up artists and runs a small business of her own, my grandmother used to make wedding dresses, my younger brother loves to draw and my younger sister makes earrings. She has also started up a small business. My family is my biggest inspiration. They are all very hard working and my biggest support network. If I’m not behind the lens I’m playing soccer. My family has been playing for Hellenic Athletic Club since it was established in 1958. Almost all of us participate in the sport, so I get a lot of opportunities to watch games and take photos too, which is what I spend most of my time doing. As you can probably tell I’m very family orientated, which is where I think my love for family portraits come from. 05.01.2022 The photo shoot that started it all. My first ever photoshoot was with my younger cousins for a photography assignment. There was a lot of planning put into the... photoshoot. We had to organise outfits, props, models and a location. The theme of the photoshoot was 1960s and it is what inspired me to photograph children and families. I try to make my photoshoots as fun as I can. I bring along lots of props like, games, bubbles, skate boards, anything that keeps the kids entertained. I even encouraged my clients to bring along things that they love todo too. I really try to show emotion and personality in my images. I like when kids are themselves infront of the camera, especially with my outdoor sessions I like them to be having fun and playing around, rather than posing them. Through this short time I’ve met so many great families already, and I’m so excited to meet many more. My little cousins have been such awesome help throughout it all, and I’m so lucky to have such a great family that let me borrow the kids for me to practice. Sometimes I don’t even have to ask, they will ask me. They enjoy it as much as I do, so I’m really glad I can share something so special with them. 01.01.2022 Playing with light. As well as outdoor portraits I also do studio portraits. My studio is very simple, I have wooden floor boards and a white background but am... hoping to purchase more colourful backgrounds soon! To start off, I used natural lighting in my studio, but soon after bought some studio lights. I love to use studio lights as you can move them around and put them on angles to create a whole new mood and effect on an image. Light is the key to any successful photo so it’s important to know how to position it to get the best outcome possible. I find that studio lighting is a lot harder to master than natural lighting and has been a learning process for me. I watch a lot of YouTube video tutorials to assist me in getting better. I’ve had some images that have been too over exposed and some where the shadowing is not very flattering, so I am slowly learning to fix that. Again very very lucky to have so many younger cousins to help me. I’m currently doing a photography assignment based on the effects of lighting and shadows on images, so I’m hoping to learn a lot from that too. #EllisStory #SeeUsHearUsKnowUs #KnowUs
