25.01.2022 We welcome Dr Ky Manze to The Elms as a new GP Registrar. Ky replaces Oscar and Javed (she gets to do the work of 2 previous registrars!) who have completed their 6 month terms with us. Ky has recently been working as a GP Registrar in a practice in Northcote. Prior to this she worked in Geelong University Hospital doing a number of different rotations in different areas. She graduated in Medicine from Deakin University in Geelong. Before that she did a Bachelor of Medical Science and Graduate Diploma in Education (secondary) at Griffith University in Queensland where her family live.

23.01.2022 Choosing Wisely is a good authority with some excellent advice about what you can do about COIVD19. Don't feel powerless and worried. Be well informed. The Guide For Consumers is a guide for everyone. https://www.choosingwisely.org.au//choosing-wisely-austral

23.01.2022 After COVID lockdown and coming into Christmas, do you think you might be consuming more alcohol than recommended? Do you want to do something about it and do something for research? Monash University and Turning Point Melbourne are looking for people to trial their SWIPE App. It is an app that they hope will help reduce people’s alcohol intake. It is free to participate. Only 500 people being recruited. https://www.swipe-app.com.au/about-the-study

23.01.2022 Masks. Protect yourself and others.

20.01.2022 We celebrated Dr Woody Wu’s birthday today, a few days late. But the cake and balloons were worth the wait. Even socially distancing.

18.01.2022 Mental Health Support for young people during the COVID19 emergency. This is a stressful time for everyone and young people may need extra support at this time. Our GPs are happy to see people either face to face or by telehealth. We all have mental health training as part of GP specialisation. This new on line resource may be helpful as well. https://www.orygen.org.au//Clinical-services/Moderated-Onl

17.01.2022 Lockdown in Melbourne. While Bacchus Marsh is not included in that lockdown, we are only just down the road from Melton Shire that has had significant numbers of positive COVID19 cases (20 active cases identified currently). PLEASE be careful. 1) Wash your hands frequently 2) Cough/sneeze into your elbow 3) Maintain at least 1.5m social distancing and avoid enclosed spaces. 4) Work from home if possible and only go out if necessary. ... 5) Shop locally if possible. 6) Consider wearing a mask in public, especially if going somewhere that may make it difficult to physically distance. Contact our practice for a Telehealth consultation if you need advice or help (telephone or video). It is a very stressful time for everyone and we may be able to help. Let’s get control of this virus again. See more

17.01.2022 On Friday we had an early celebration for Christmas and the End of a Year we will never forget. Social distancing is still the norm as are masks in our higher risk situation. We held it in the waiting room so we could spread out. Individually packaged meals prepared by One69 cafe. The Stealing Santa game was a great success. It was lovely to relax for a short time.

16.01.2022 Our summer newsletter is available here https://theelms.com.au/The%20Elms%20Quarterly%20Summer%2020

12.01.2022 Masks- are still required to enter The Elms Family Medical Centre. The healthcare setting is still a high risk area and we take the protection of our patients and staff seriously.

09.01.2022 On line bookings for your doctor at The Elms can be made for telephone appointments only during the COVID19 emergency. See the Book Now button on this page, use our Website or use The Elms FMC App.

09.01.2022 We are now using eScripts. They are working with all pharmacies in Bacchus Marsh and most in Melton. It is being rolled out rapidly across Victoria now. Then it will be gradually rolled out across the rest of Australia. Ask your doctor if you would like your script sent to your phone or computer as SMS or email. We are still using normal paper scripts if preferred. This is just another option. It is particularly useful for Telehealth consultations.

07.01.2022 Electronic prescriptions now available! This complements our telehealth consultations (available via telephone or video). Watch this 6 minute video to understand how it works. Most pharmacies either are, or will soon be, able to receive these eScripts. Talk to your doctor when obtaining your script whether you would like to receive it via SMS or by email. https://vimeo.com/420508998

06.01.2022 Vitamin D and COVID19. There is increasing evidence that people with low Vitamin D may do more poorly if they contract COVID19. There is no evidence Vitamin D prevents contracting COVID19. Vitamin D levels are often at their lowest this time of year and it is difficult to get enough sunlight to increase your levels in this area at this time of year. Prof Peter Ebeling (expert in Vitamin D and Bone strength) was recently on ABC Radio The Health Report suggesting people consid...er taking supplements in view of COVD19. It is usually safe to take supplements (around 1000 IU per day for adults) unless you have underlying health conditions affecting your kidney function or calcium levels. Talk to your doctor if concerned. There is usually no reason to test levels of Vitamin D with blood tests as we are likely going to recommend taking supplement and it is very safe to do so. https://www.nps.org.au/news/vitamin-d-and-covid-19 See more

05.01.2022 Masks. The situation has changed because of the increased community spread of COVID19 and mounting evidence of benefit from wearing a mask. We are not quite in the Metropolitan zone in Bacchus Marsh but the virus doesn’t know that. Please consider wearing a mask when out shopping and visiting the doctor. This applies to adults. Disposable single use ones are available to purchase at pharmacies and online. You can also purchase or make reusable cloth masks.

02.01.2022 This is a really good video for young kids to help explain the Coronavirus to them. Many are scared right now and this could help them understand why things are so different. https://youtu.be/OPsY-jLqaXM

01.01.2022 Thunderstorm asthma warning! The next few days are predicted to be moderate to high risk for thunderstorm asthma. There is a very high pollen count and adding a thunderstorm to this increases the risk of severe asthma. This can occur in people who don't usually get asthma but have hay-fever. If you get asthma, it may be wise to stay indoors out of exposure to pollen if you can. Please ensure you have an Asthma Action Plan and that you or people around you know Asthma First Aid. Ensure you are taking your asthma preventers during this time (even people with mild asthma) and have full reliever puffers-usually blue/grey colour (Ventolin, Asmol, Symbicort and others). https://asthma.org.au/what-we-do/how-we-can-help/first-aid/
