23.01.2022 Caught red handed talking books. Eltham resident Supriya Singh with her exquisitely written Girls Ate Last, a memoir and a tribute to her mother; to life led pre partition and in the aftermath in India. Supriya’s academic interests are in carrying forward conversations about money, migration and gender issues in Australia and globally. An avid gardener her new book on garden-ing is in the offing. Light your Diwali lamp this year to writers who take you on journeys unimagined and lighting up dark corners of our world.#elthambookshop #globalliterature #happydiwali #booksthatmatter #elthamtown #nlllumbik

17.01.2022 Our local author Anne Connor starring. Visit her Life and Times on our Book Revue Page and applaud the singular effort that goes into immense research and reading to create literature that reminds us the word WAR should be eliminated from our politics, our future and our dictionaries to come. The personal tragedies in these shortlisted books are laid at our feet in a homage to the idea of peace.
15.01.2022 Out now. A large book of a well examined life by a thoughtful, elegant, determined, erudite, music loving man who became a president. Volume one is fluently told with wit, gossip, insight and a self deprecating attitude that will take you into and close to a chapter of history that should never have ended. Barack Obama has many more chapters to write and promises to keep so follow him @elthambookshop
15.01.2022 In the spirit of giving this beautiful story happened@elthambookshop. A teacher from @watsoniaprimary came searching for 23 books to give to his class as end of year gifts. With a little bit of help he found a stack to choose from. He matched each book to each student. We added a little gift and wrapped all 23 ready to bring the biggest smiles on earth to the students of this caring teacher. Bravo.#elthambookshop #nillumbik #banyule #primaryschoolsaustralia #watsoniaearlylearning #watsoniaprimaryschool #independentbooksellers #booksformiddlegrade #booksforgifts #australiareads #backyourbookshop #shoplocalshopearly #teachersrock

02.01.2022 Be proud Nillumbik. Be very proud.
02.01.2022 Max by Alex Miller This is a book like no other that Alex Miller has written. A life time in the making this memoir is a moving, rich, tender tribute to friendship. Alex, in his very early years as a writer in Melbourne, was fortunate to meet Max, a man of few words but endowed with great insight into the heart and mind of a novelist-to-be. Wise, generous, cultured Max became Alex’s lodestar in his writing journey. The hearth around which many quiet conversations took place b...ecomes a repeating and fitting motif of companionship in the book. After Max died it fell upon Alex to repay his writerly debt when just by chance he and his wife, Stephanie, visited the Kathe Kollwitz museum in Berlin. Emblematically the museum is filled with sculptures and paintings-dark and sorrowful. A Kathe Kollwitz painting hung in Max’s Melbourne’s home that Stephanie remembered. All through this most compelling biography, page after page, chance and coincidence, kind strangers and acquaintances, writers, poets, archivists, family members take Alex forward to unfold and attempt to piece together the shard-like life of Max. A life shattered into pieces because as a very young man Max, christened Moses, gave up family, career prospects and his youth to speak up against the terrible acts perpetrated by the Nazis. Shattered by torture, having to become invisible, to hide, to run, to abandon loved ones, to migrate into a far away world, Max’s sense of a futile life is what Alex Miller helps redeem. In writing this book it is almost as though a salve is gently applied to the hurt and the waste that evil and war cause. Alex superbly gives us a life story that will never leave your heart even though the best that can be done is to gather some of the broken pieces together, gaze at them in the hope of seeing the portrait of a caring, loving man shine through. It is a book filled with mysteries and many happy moments of celebrations. It is a book where a writer’s search for truths that lie at the bottom of our humanity comes through with warmth and passion. At all times, Stephanie, is Alex Miller’s constant muse and companion. Such is the power of love. Please read it this summer- slowly See more
