20.01.2022 LOW BACK PAIN IN PREGNANCY As many as 60-70% of pregnant women can experience pregnancy-related low back pain (PLBP). Although most cases are mild, approxima...tely one third of women can experience severe pain. Some general strategies that may help prevent or manage PLBP are: Side lying while sleeping or resting, and use a wedge shaped pillow to support your stomach Use a pillow between your legs while side lying (you can squeeze the pillow/legs together while rolling to help stabilise your lower back) Regularly change your position from sitting or standing, and alternating it with walking or stretching Taking breaks and resting in a comfortable position as needed. At any stage of pregnancy, your osteopath can provide personalised advice to help you prevent or manage PLBP. This may include: Postural advice Movement education and exercise advice Stretching and strengthening programs. 18.01.2022 Case study from Dr Jess Sammut @whole.health.osteopathy Pillows and Neck Pain I regularly get asked for my opinion on pillows, mattresses and sleeping, and I’m not going to lie it doesn’t really spark joy in me my opinion may be controversial, but as a long time headache sufferer, I believe that there’s no such thing as a perfect pillow, and just because you spent big dollars doesn’t mean it’ll solve your problems. ... This patient took the initiative and brought his pillow in for us to have a look at, as he wasn’t sure if he should buy a new one or if it could explain his neck soreness. He is a side sleeper, but he speaks of wry neck with way too much familiarity no team, you shouldn’t be that okay with a regularly wry neck Photo 1: before treatment, right side. No big dramas for me - happy days. Photo 2: Before treatment, left side. The stiff and sore side - no surprises though, am I right?? Findings of a restricted rib 1, tight scalenes, lev scap and an upper cross dysfunction. VERY different. He also prefers to sleep on this side. Photo 3: 30 minutes later after treatment... this is where it’s interesting - where he was questioning if he should get a new pillow, by treating effectively through the area, his neck clearly looks better in the pillow so I’ll keep you posted on how he’s sleeping, but honestly, sometimes you just need a good treatment before you waste money on more pillows!! Everyone’s pillow preference will differ - me, I love a latex pillow, but there are so many choices out there! @ Eltham, Victoria, Australia See more

15.01.2022 CLINIC UPDATE - STEP 2 RESTRICTIONS With a new look and easing restrictions for allied health care providers in metropolitan Melbourne from 28th September,... I’m so pleased to be able to help a wider range of patients The good news is that osteopaths will be able to provide essential face to face services: To prevent a significant deterioration in functional independence which would result in an escalation of care needs such as: - Increased frequency in treatment - Significant increase in pain - Specialist input - Substantial increase in recovery time as a result of delayed care For assessment and diagnostic purposes for those people whose care has been delayed during stage 4 restrictions, and where further delay likely to result in deterioration To provide essential pre-operative or post-operative elective surgery care The bad news it that routine care and regular monitoring, other than via telehealth, is not permitted. If you are unsure if you meet the criteria for osteopathic care, please do not hesitate to get in touch Read our full COVID-19 Clinic Policy and Procedures here https://www.northernfamilyosteo.com.au//covid-19-clinic-p/ . . . . . #osteopathy #paediatrics #eltham3095

13.01.2022 Back on the morning veggie juices Feeling so good after a week of veggie juice first thing in the morning and a diet of lots of vegetables, some healthy fat...s, lean protein and a bit of fruit I use a combination of veg and herbs from the garden and top it up with purchased organic produce where possible and some non organic. Today’s juice had Kale(my garden), Cleavers (from the garden-herb that’s great for the lymphatic system), Parsley, Chickweed, carrots, ginger, beetroot (my garden), cucumber, apple, turmeric and lemon. This power tonic is gently detoxing to the kidneys, lymphatic, liver and bowel and also alkalising. I feel great and am getting a bit of a glow on from it I think! See more

04.01.2022 Daily inspo from Claire at @balanced_ground, our reflexologist Does your mind feel like a constant wave of moving thoughts, to-do lists, organising & planning? Stepping back into my work wth clients this week, I’ve seen a very strong theme that women (most of them mothers also) are telling me that they feel they have been ‘holding everything together’ during the isolation period. They feel they have carried their own worries & struggles but then also carried those ...of their partner, children & sometimes extended family. Throw in some paid work, home schooling, household organisation, looking after children and you have got a massive mental & physical load! It’s a lot to juggle & now the impact is showing with changes in mental health, low energy, poor sleep, body aches/ pains, racing thoughts. Shifting this experience can take some time and I’m a firm believer in a practical & realistic approach. There are a million ways to support your wellbeing & nurture yourself that little bit more - you just have to love yourself enough to allow yourself to do this! When was the last time you felt calm & at ease? Where were you? Who were you with? What did you experience? How can you create that same feeling & experience, even if only for a few moments? It’s time to slowly let go of that heavy load & find a way to care for ourselves - - - #mentalload #health #mentalhealth #emotions #women #wellbeing #wellness #selfcare #selflove #nurture #balance #mum #reflexology #reiki #hotstonemassage See more

01.01.2022 @northern_family_osteo Did you know that engaged, active fathers may also have improved health outcomes? Since returning to in person consultations a few weeks ago, an increased number of dads have been attending appointments with their children. I’ve personally found it really beneficial to have them present to discuss their child’s progress and show them first hand any exercises and at home advice I prescribe. ... Being an involved father brings with it many health and social benefits for the whole family. When fathers build strong relationships with their children and others in the family, they are more likely to receive support and caring in return, and the mother will experience higher levels of support and less stress. . Furthermore, where fathers have early involvement in a child’s life children are more likely to have early educational achievement. Fathers’ play with their children seems to promote an active, competitive, autonomous and curious attitude in children that is beneficial to the child’s cognitive and social development. This is equally important for raising both boys and girls. Reference: https://www.menshealthweek.org.au/ . . . #menshealthweek2020 #raisinghealthychildren #supportingfamilies See more
