25.01.2022 This is not our original idea. Just got this picture from a group page with no author to contact. We become interested because the pair of shoes is similar to my old shoes gone to bin few years ago. Isn't it cute?
23.01.2022 Few weeks ago, we posted how to propagate Mung beans in a soil, in a container or pot. There are many ways how to propagate from Mung bean seeds. With a soil in it, it will sprout some leaves and roots. Whereas, propagating without a soil and with just a very small amount of water is easy, more convenient and actually quicker. You need a medium bowl, two tablespoons mung bean seeds. Soak overnight, then drain the water, wash it and put into the bowl. Not much water needed. C...over well and put in a cool place, away from direct sunlight. Must wash each day and after seven days, the result you see on the picture below. As you can see the sprouts has no leaves and fine roots, only stem and the buds from the seeds. These are used in spring rolls, vegetarian salads, and fritters with added baby prawns, lightly beaten egg, onions and carrots, salt and pepper to taste. A low cost meal, loaded with vitamins and minerals good for our health. See more
20.01.2022 Hi everyone. We wish to share one of our few gardening tricks to those who are not sure how to grow Mung beans. One of the fastest growing vegetable plant are beans, being Mung beans the fastest to sprout. We bought the dried mung bean seeds from an Asian or Filipino store. These mongo beans, as Filipinos call it, are used in cooking a popular veggie dish they usually cook on a Friday no meat day, called Mongo with Ampalaya leaves (leaves of bitter gourd or bitter melon as we... call it in Australia). You may add small Prawns or shrimps, if desired. Usually soak the seeds in tap water overnight to make it softer. Rinse and strain the water out and cook with garlic, onion and optional tiny slices of red chilli. The Mung bean seeds is one of the veggies you can plant either in a soil or ground, or in a container or pot. We planted ours in an old Aluminium baking tray, put six small holes at the bottom so excess water will have an easy flow. We found an old tray to act as 'saucer' to catch the excess water and so your place or garden space will not look messy. Or, you can use any unwanted plastic container, like the container from take away food to raise seedlings, or plant the seed. All you need is a bit of gardening soil and a bit of seed- raising soil. If no seed raising soil, use all gardening soil. It might just take slower to grow without the seed raising soil. We planted the seed on the 14th, this month, and today, 22nd, May, has now stems and leaves - ready for the picking as a veggie, a nice side dish to any main dish. So, in less than 10 days, you can harvest for a yummy, crunchy (stem) veggie. Happy planting! See more
15.01.2022 Tomatoes are very slow to grow during winter. However, the small variety like Cherry tomatoes, Roma tomatoes and Sweet Berry truss tomatoes can grow well, especially in containers or pots, and as long as they are exposed to at least minimum of six hours direct sunlight. Sowing the seeds from a fresh tomato takes less than ten days to sprout. You then plant it to a pot. After just thirty days, it will start to have buds and flowers, like in the picture. We use home-made fertilizer for our veggies and herbs. Banana peel, crushed egg shells, fish and seafood wash are but a few we use. It works OK.
08.01.2022 Hi dear all! One of our favourite activities during this lockdown is planting or gardening. We choose plants or veggies that grow quick and need not to wait for many weeks or months before harvest. One of the fastest growing veggie is Onion. I love spring onion - the leaves, specially, to go with salad, to sprinkle some noodle dish, etc. To plant onion from a seed takes many days and weeks before sprouting. The quickest is to cut the bottom part of a store bought spring onion... bunch and plant it either in a pot or straight in the soil or garden. After about five days, you have onion leaves you can use for cooking. The second method which I personally prefer is by cutting a quarter (bottom part where the roots are) of a whole onion, wash and soak in a small container or jar with water just enough to touch the roots. After five days, new roots will sprout and another two days or so the green part in the middle will sprout. That is the time to plant, either in a pot or in the garden. After a few days from re-plantibg you can cut some leaves for your salad or soup. But you have to wait for few more weeks to have onion bulbs. Happy gardening! See more
