19.01.2022 When I was 7, SS officers burst into our home. They tore the pages out of my grandfather’s Gemarah, ripped his Talit and shredded his Sefer Torah. Later we learned that the synagogue which my grandfather had established had been burned to the ground. I don't think the pain will ever leave me - Eve Kanner Kugler, Kristallnacht Survivor. 82 years ago, November 9, 1938, the Nazis terrorised the Jewish people by desecrating, ransacking and burning synagogues, homes and businesses.... 91 Jews were killed, more than 30,000 Jews were thrown into concentration camps for the crime of simply being Jewish, and the destruction of over 1,400 synagogues began. Kristallnacht - the Night of Broken Glass. The streets were covered with broken glass from Jewish windows. Last night we kept the lights on in our Shule, as did hundreds of other Houses of Worship and Jewish institutions around the world. In the words of Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, The Nazis knew one thing: If you want to hurt the Jew, you have to hurt the synagogue. The heart of the Jewish people is the synagogueon the night of the 9th of November, make them full of lightit shows that we are not only with the past, with remembrance, but with hope for a beautiful light-filled future". Our Shule was established by those who lived through and witnessed these atrocities. They chose to rebuild; their lives, their Yiddishkeit and their communities. They chose to stand up against antisemitism, racism, intolerance, and hatred by shining light over the darkness. This light, of remembrance, courage, determination, hope and Jewish tradition will continue to burn brightly in our Shules, homes and in our heart and soul. Am Yisrael Chai!

04.01.2022 Every year at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Australians pause to remember our fallen soldiers. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning ... We will remember them." Lest we forget.
