09.01.2022 Repost from @terroir_ We are extremely humbled that our Victorian colleagues thought to give the William Wardell Award for Public Architecture and the Regional Award to the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre on Friday night. Despite TERROIR’s office locations and heritage in Hobart/Sydney/CPH, we’ve always felt at home in the Victorian architecture culture with its intertwining of vigorous critique and a broad appreciation of multiple viewpoints. The number of awards given to v...ery different projects on Friday night is testament to that culture. Recognition of the project is a recognition of the many people involved, starting with the Victorian State Government in the mid 1980s which, in the face of evidence by Peter Dann (current Head of Research at Philip Island Nature Parks) and others, announced the Summerlands Peninsula Buyback to protect the penguins. Thirty-five years later, the State Government committed funds to build the new Penguin Parade Visitor Centre. Phillip Island Nature Parks is an amazing organisation. Under the leadership of Matthew Jackson (CEO) and Jeff Floyd (Chair) they put the case for a new visitor centre and engaged AIA Gold Medallist Peter Elliot to prepare initial work. While under construction, Catherine Basterfield and Liz Stinson (current CEO and Chair) provided great stewardship for the project. Continuity throughout was provided by Kevin Love (Chair of Steering Committee) and Damian Prendergast, former Manager Major Projects and Infrastructure, who was a brilliant client throughout. The procurement and construction phase was a great collaboration including Project Manager Gareth Phillips (AECOM), Slattery (Quantity Surveyors) and the team from Kane Constructions and their many subcontractors, all too numerous to mention but they know who they are. Our consultant team included critical inputs from Tract Landscape, Wood & Grieve Engineers (now Stantec) and Thylacine (Interps). We would also like to thank the TERROIR team who worked with us throughout the project.
