02.01.2022 CHEMISTRY PART 1 Lots of hobbists been asking us does dosing amino acid help with coral growth and coloration? The answer is very simple: Judge it yourself! Amino acids are mainly uptaked as a Nitrogen source by symbiotic cells in corals called zooxanthellae. It is indeed... known that the transfer of photosynthates from the zooxanthellae to the animal is a source of energy, enhancing the animal metabolism and the incorporation of nitrogen into proteins (Grover et al., 2008). This mechanism has been called the light-enhanced amino acid assimilation (Al-Moghrabi et al., 1993). However, the primary source and secondary source are ammonia and nitrate which combined make up nearly 75% of total Nitrogen requirement for tissue growth! Neverthless, the contribution of amino acids is necessarily indirect to photosynthetic activity! Fact 1 Amino acids can elevate the nitrate in your tank to a sky high off-chart level. Amino acids can be immediately broken down into nitrate by bacteria existing in your aquarium. If you do regular water change and wet skimming at the same time but still have a high nitrate level in your tank, then it's time to stop dosing amino acids! Fact 2 Amino acids can make your corals look like covered with browny guano! Again! Amino acids are mainly uptaked by zooxanthellae, high density of zooxanthellae cells can result in 'poop' color. Fact 3 Amino acids may help with your coral tissue growth, but amino acids are specific to species! Fact 4 Best food for corals are live food such as zooplankton! Conclusion If you decide you choose amino acid as a food source for corals, first thing first, understand how amino acid affect your coral and aquarium, don't be fooled by promising words on Ad. Know your manufactors before you purchase their products! Reliable suppliers have their own laboratory and multiple systems for control test! Avoid junky small yard operation!
