25.01.2022 Yoga for Healthy Joints I suppose in an ideal world we wouldn’t need yoga at all. Which chimpanzee, panther or gazelle, ever needed to exercise? Should the human animal be any different? Forget the big cat. We humans are one of the most divine movers in the natural world. Of course, athletes and movement artists embody the ultimate range, but don’t forget your own body’s sweeping ability to configure into endless shapes and uses. How we mimic other creatures of planet earth. ...Such as the water bird poised gracefully on one foot or the monkey; hanging from a tree. With fingers and thumbs we can weave or write, or even bring forth music out of wood. Once, I even saw a man paint a masterpiece with his toes. Yet for most part we don’t feel so majestic. Just to earn a living, our natural movement is clipped and consigned to small spaces for hour upon hour. Our vision is foreshortened, mostly running up against white walls. Rarely do we scan the horizon or pick a delicate edible amongst of forest of green. The joints of hands and fingers operate on one plane; the keyboard and the mouse. There is no longer the need for meticulous actions such as threading and weaving. Even handwriting is fast becoming a thing of the past. This week’s practice is a mobility base flow. Enabling you to take a break from the hemming in and the straight lines. Moving and exploring each joint and muscle, letting them limber up, flex and articulate to re-fire our natural energy. 19.01.2022 50 Plus: Don’t we get Something? OK. That’s the third time someone more or less my age has told me about their low bone density. What did the doctor tell you to do? I ask, ever curious on matters of my own approaching age. Always a vague answer about weight bearing exercise and taking vitamin D tablets. Then the conversation moves too quickly on to more pressing matters. I have to tell you. The women I know are amazing. The things they do. They run businesses, get degree...s, start new careers, become foster parents. All the while they love their families and care for aged parents. Now the phase of caring for newborn babies and chasing toddlers looks like a dreamy summer to me. The babies gave me no choice, but to spend hours admiring their clumsy steps in the park, celebrating gentle victories and commiserating with my friends about the lack of sleep. But this menopause; I’m not sure the sleep gets much better. It’s burning hormones instead of a darling baby that’s keeping me awake at night. As I listen to their drifting conversation; the responsibility and the stress. I think, it is 50 plus... Don’t we get something? I know there’s no letter from the queen, but isn’t half a century something? I don’t want a surprise party because it will be me doing the dishes at the end of the night, because of I’ve lost the ability not to care. Just one baby and I was done. I could no longer live life like it didn’t count anymore. It began the first night we brought him home. I was afraid he would stop breathing, and it set me on a course. But there was a time when I didn’t give a care. Death was distant and my parents were old. Who were you back then? Coconut oil on the beach. What did you do all day? Whole novels Where did you find the time? Time is like a funnel. It starts off wide and wonderful and then narrows until you are falling too fast toward the end. So I am thinking at half a century we should get something, if only for our bones. Now is the time to care for them. You’ve been loving everyone else for such a long time. It’s nothing to spend on ballet, circus, and violin. How many trips to watch the children shoot up the trapeze, back flip or double back on a skateboard. How amazing are they? Is that why it all got so disinteresting when it came to yourself. What does it take for my beautiful friends? I think it’s time. To give yourself a little attention. Monique

17.01.2022 All the Beautiful Yoga Bodies Once, I thought I should get an Instagram account. Didn’t all yoga teachers have one? So I typed ‘yoga’ on Instagram and began to scroll. I am sorry to those amazing (Yoginis mostly), who had made the effort; to perfect the pose, to do their hair and rise before the sunrise to get that perfect shot, but I couldn’t look. Recently, I’ve had a change of heart. Instagram yoga may be exaggerated and touched up. It could also be accused of... making the rest of us feel ‘less than’ if we begin to compare. But in a way, those gorgeous images have captured something. The practice of yoga itself is very beautiful. Think of the mudra’s soft positioning of hands. The shapes named after animals, triangles and crescent moons. The drama of rising up in a warrior stance. The way we flow, sway, reach and bend. The curling the spine. The trailing of our fingers through space. Of balancing on one foot. If it weren’t for yoga such movements would be reserved only for children, dancers (and Instagramers). So now I am thinking. There is no difference between the Instagrammers and me. The movements are just the same. Of course, their legs might lift a little higher, the back bends are a little deeper. And some of those arm balances, well it might be safer, just to give them a miss. But the movements, the shapes, the dance and the breath will never be reserved only for the impossibly flexible. Those movements are for all of our beautiful yoga bodies. This week I am looking forward to some more morning yoga with you. I have included variations on butterfly and my favourite; child’s pose. A little yoga thankyou to our own yoga bodies; loving them and appreciating for them for the way they carry us through each chapter of life. Monique
12.01.2022 Who said we had to be Perfect, anyway? I had a strange feeling the day my daughter took her driving test For once it wasn’t me wrestling with butterflies. When I first started teaching yoga, it was just another, in a long list of nervous first tries. Oh, I know running a 5:30pm yoga class is hardly a reason to get worked up, but in the short drive between home and the studio I could conjure up a thousand real and unjustified fears. The long held fear of public speaking, the... possibility of forgetting a sequence. And of course, the dreaded.... What will people think. Will they like it? Will they like me? How the body tricks us. That sense of falling in upon yourself, palms sweating and stomach churning. Why this terror of failure? And who said we had to be perfect, anyway? Is it some throw back from school days or, is it the age old ego always on our case, telling us there is a bottomless pit for those who fail. So from the one who stands up in front of class, still sometimes having to swallow back the nerves, I would really like anyone who practices with me, to put all that aside. You don’t have to get it ‘right’ or follow sequences exactly. There’s no expectation. No need for perfection. And you certainly don’t need to worry about how you look or your brand of yoga clothing. Let’s put all that aside. It’s just a 5:30pm yoga class after all. Nothing to get too serious about. Monique Embodi Yoga PS: My daughter passed her driving test, and I’m pretty sure I was more nervous than her.

07.01.2022 How to be more flexible There was a time when my main goal was to be super flexible. I don’t think my motives were particularly pure. I just thought it was kind of sexy to be able to fold yourself in two. Now I am far more interested in mobility and functional movement. OK. I just realised how practical and unsexy those words are. But even so, functional movement is important. We need to be able to move with ease. To twist and reach without fear of injury. To not think twice...Continue reading

03.01.2022 Whole body yoga.... Not forgetting your feet There is a special connection between the muscles and nerves of the pelvic floor and those of your feet. Fascial lines run from the bottom of your feet, up the back legs, through the pelvis before reaching your torso and skull. Signs of foot weakness may be indicative of pelvic floor weakness or visa verse. By strengthening the muscles of your feet you will support the muscles of the pelvic floor. ... Here is a yoga practice to awaken your feet and pelvic floor along with the rest of the body.
