24.01.2022 Terminology Time! When talking about Hippotherapy, it’s important to use the right terminology. The term hippotherapy refers to how occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology professionals use evidence-based practice and clinical reasoning in the purposeful manipulation of equine movement to engage sensory, neuromotor, and cognitive systems to achieve functional outcomes. In conjunction with the affordances of the equine environment and other trea...tment strategies, hippotherapy is part of a patient’s integrated plan of care. American Hippotherapy Association. 2017. It means I can provide this service as a physiotherapist. Just like how I use hydrotherapy, clinical Pilates, fitballs etc in my therapy sessions. There’s assessments/reassessment, goals, treatment plan and a discharge criteria. Some clients may be discharged (or progressed [winky face]) to Adaptive Riding! Adaptive Riding is an equine-assisted activity for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with special needs [and the] aims are developing horseback riding skills. PATH Int, 2014. In Adaptive Riding they use reins, saddles and stirrups to learn to ride. In Hippotherapy we go as minimal as a saddle pad to optimise the movement experience and it’s impact on the client. In Hippotherapy, we change positions (side sitting, sitting backwards, laying on the tummy, going on hands and knees etc) and work in those positions. In Adaptive Riding there isn’t. Both can incorporate games; both have an influence on a persons physical, social, cognitive, emotional development; both have horses. Adaptive Riding may have a horse handler and 1-2 side walkers, or they may not. I run my Hippotherapy session one on one. Adaptive Riding can be run in an individualised or group session. In funding talk, each one is funded differently. One may be more appropriate than the other for a multitude of reasons. But both are amazing opportunities people can have access to. I’m happy to talk about which is the best option for you or your child. Send me an email on [email protected] ID: picture on the left is a young boy on oxygen therapy. Picture on the right is a young girl sitting in a saddle holding reins with a horse handler leading the horse at the head of the horse.

23.01.2022 Utilising the Hippotherapy intervention modality allows me to target moving in 4 dimensions, and I am pleased to announce that in Term 2, we will be bringing another dimension. 20.01.2022 Sharing again cause terminology is important! As a physiotherapist I use Hippotherapy technique as a physiotherapy strategy, to reach physiotherapy goals and incorporate multiple other physiotherapy strategies within this physiotherapy session such as total motion release, clinical Pilates and/or kinesiotape to name just a few. So yes, you are attending a physio session [smiling face emoji]

04.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK, Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies.... This week I’ve been reading The Rainbow Serpent by Dick Roughsey, a Dreamtime story. The Dreamtime story of the Platypus is another of my favourite. Which one is yours? 04.01.2022 The effects of a stroke can vary so much between individuals and for G, it means that although he can stand, walk and sit independently, his ability to identify colours, follow instructions and speak is impacted. Light reaction training pods is a fantastic tool to use with G as it allows him to response to the flashing light while working on goals such as balance and/or strengthening. ID: video of a man tapping out a flashing set of lights stuck to the door.
