24.01.2022 One question I often get asked is if clients can get rebates for counselling through Medicare and sadly the answer to that question at this stage is no. Counselling is not currently funded under any Medicare scheme. I do however have a provider number for Medibank Private and clients with certain health cover packages with them can claim a rebate for counselling. Recently I have been informed that clients with AHM cover may also be able to claim rebates for counselling. For further information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

23.01.2022 Who I am and why I do what I do.... For those who have recently joined my page, welcome . My name is Lorelai and I started my counselling private practice last year after something like 20 years as a mental health nurse working with both adults and teenagers in a range of settings beforehand. I have always loved to work with people and knew that was to be my destiny even as a child, I just wasn’t sure in what capacity. Being a counsellor has been the best thing ever!!! I... love meeting new people and I feel that I learn from my clients all the time. Working with people is complex and complicated and I know that learning will be lifelong. I am always reading books on a range of topics, enrolling in webinars and am looking at the moment into starting another degree next year in the area of children and adolescent therapy so that I can be more specialised in this area as they are the main clientele I see. Although children and teens are my main clientele, I do also see adults in my practice. I strive to be as creative in my approaches as I can and tailor sessions to suit the client. I am fortunate enough to have an obstacle course, a traditional therapy room and an art room as part of my practice. I also offer walk and talk therapy I also work a lot with self managed NDIS clients who can benefit from creative and different approaches to therapy. I know none of us belong in a box and the approaches I use acknowledge the diversity of the individuals that I see and there is no such thing as a ‘one method suits all’ approach.

22.01.2022 Well 2020 is nearly done and dusted!! It has been one of the strangest and most difficult years for me but one that has also taught me so much and to realise how much I have taken for granted before this and to appreciate what I have. There has been so much that we have all had to adapt to this year and no doubt many of you reading this have also had their share of disappointments and broken dreams. We have all had to be adaptable beyond our wildest dreams and learn to appre...ciate the simple pleasures in life. I hope that our new normal is one that encourages us to be grateful for all that we have rather than focusing on what we don't or can't have, and that we practice kindness and compassion where possible with others, even for those we do not know personally. I am having a break now with my family and not returning until January 11th. I hope all of you have a Christmas that is special even though it may not resemble one that is typical. Lorelai

20.01.2022 Sending a special thank you to St Vincent de Paul society for the amazing sensory oasis. I know some of my clients are going to love it!!

19.01.2022 Wishing you all a Happy New Year and wonderful 2021 ahead

17.01.2022 Who cares about my neatly framed qualifications if I had no idea about working with people or care about people’s feelings? I have always maintained that nothing in the classroom can teach me more than the people I spend my time trying to help. My clients are my best teachers. By listening to them, about their needs, about their individual personalities and asking for regular feedback, I get my greatest experiences and learn the most. ... This is also why I especially enjoy working with children and teenagers. Many of them will have little to no filters and I love that I know what they are thinking and they will give me the most open and honest feedback which I truly appreciate

15.01.2022 Sometimes children struggle to identify what it is they are feeling. It’s fabulous to find little games like this at Kmart to make things a little easier and more fun

11.01.2022 Between running two businesses and keeping up with my studies, it’s not often that I get the opportunity to be able to attend a workshop that I want to do. Today, I was lucky and the stars aligned for me and I had an amazing day learning more creative strategies I can use with some of my younger clients that I see

09.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Everyone deserves a life free from violence. If you are experiencing domestic or family violence, we encourage you to speak out. If you or your family are in immediate danger, call Triple Zero (000).

08.01.2022 Counselling is the first career where I feel like the more I learn, the less I know. I have spent approximately 14 years of my adult life learning at different teaching institutions. All of my certificates, diplomas and degrees have been centred around helping people. I have 20 + years experience in working with people with a range of mental health issues but never do I feel like I am any kind of expert. Human Beings are complex, they are unique, they all see their world the...ir own individual way. How can a book, a webinar or a degree possibly teach me who I will meet and what they will bring to the counselling room? How can any of these teach me what this person needs from their therapy experience? I have come to accept that these books and courses do give me perspective, challenge ideas, promote growth in new education but it is the client themselves that teaches me the most. I have been in positions in my own personal life where I have sought help from a professional and have felt like they have put me in a neat box of what they think is going on for me which I have felt didn’t fit and they have not cared to hear me when I have told them this. I am passionate about not doing that to others. In my counselling space, you are the expert on your life not me. I will walk along side you, I will teach skills that may help you after finding out what skills you may already have, I will ask you questions that will hopefully help you gain perspective. I will keep learning from books, webinars and courses but it will always be you, the client, who is my greatest teacher.

08.01.2022 Let's try not to forget...

07.01.2022 I’m always so sad to hear the news when I hear of people that desperately needed help and didn’t receive it for whatever reason and it is only after a tragedy that people realise just how bad things had been for them. I’m particularly thinking of the Melbourne mother and three children on this one, but also those that we don’t hear of, those that aren’t in the news who suicide for example. I truly hope that this pandemic really highlights just how much more mental health help is needed in our community and more people can get the help when they desperately need it.

05.01.2022 I remember when I was a kid long long ago, I was so scared of leaving high school when I was 18 and figuring out my path. I didn’t get the grades to get into uni (I wasn’t the most dedicated school student) and all I knew was that I had the desire to help people in some capacity. I chose to go to TAFE and study a Diploma in Youth Work as I was interested in working with teens (even though I was one myself ). I discovered I loved it and continued to study in a range of areas... related to working with people but never being quite sure where I belonged. Fast forward a few decades, a couple of degrees and 20 odd years working as a nurse in a variety of mental health settings and I am now working in private practice for myself. As I attract mostly children and teenagers as clients, I find myself once again feeling like I need to know more. I’m so excited to have been accepted into this course starting next year to specialise in this field! How funny that I started in youth studies and have come full circle to build on this specific area

03.01.2022 We all do this right? We tell ourselves something over and over again until it seems true. It then becomes ‘our truth’, not necessarily ‘the truth’ and often we don’t realise that unless we discuss it with someone objective who challenges us on it..........

02.01.2022 This is such an important message and one I use a lot with counselling clients. Sometimes things in life can feel so ‘big’ and overwhelming and it can make such a difference to break things down into smaller manageable steps.
