22.01.2022 Snake Bite We have had a number of Dogs in the last couple of weeks present with snake Bites. Snake Bite - What should I do? Dogs will often try to chase or kill snakes resulting in snake bites usually to the dogs face and legs. Cats, being hunters, are quite susceptible to snake bites.... The sort of reaction your pet has to a snake bite is determined by a number of factors: the type of snake, the amount of venom injected and the site of the snake bite. Generally the closer the bite is to the heart the quicker the venom spreads to the rest of the body. In addition, at the beginning of summer, snakes venom glands are fuller and their bites are much more severe. In central Queensland the Eastern Brown snake and the Red Belly Black is responsible for most of the snake bites in domestic pets. These snakes have a toxin that causes paralysis and also have an agent in them that uses up all the clotting factors that helps to stop your pet from bleeding. Signs of snake bite include: Sudden weakness followed by collapse Shaking or twitching of the muscles and difficulty blinking Vomiting Loss of bladder and bowel control Dilated pupils Paralysis Blood in urine. If you think your pet has been bitten by a snake you should keep them calm and quiet and bring them immediately to us at 57 Theresa Street Emerald 4982 1555. The chances of recovery are much greater if your pet is treated early.

17.01.2022 We are pleased to share a patients story of success. On xmas eve last year, little 4 month old Emmy presented with a deep wound to her foot - X-ray revealed the foot was badly broken in four places. Upon further consultation, Brian diagnosed that Emmy was also displaying early signs of Tetanus.. or commonly known as Lockjaw.... Tetanus is a bacterial disease caused by the bacteria Clostridium tetani. This bacteria lives in the soil for up to 100 years and causes severe muscle spasms which are life threatening. Early onset in an animal or human presents with a furrowing of the brow , the eyes are wide open like a look of surprise . Then the jaw becomes stiff , followed by drooling , then the neck muscles begin to stiffen. As the toxin spreads throughout the body the seizures begin, causing the inability to open the mouth at all times and the entire body becomes rigid then the seizures take over. Putting the treatment of Emmys broken foot on hold the team began around the clock intensive palliative care for Emmys Seizures. This involved a mixture of Muscle relaxants , tranquilizers and fluids. After two weeks the seizures were lessening in frequency and intensity, the worst was over, time to focus on recovery, and rehabilitation Emmy took her first steps 3 days ago albeit very wobbly but what an achievement , the big grin on her face says it all. Emmys recovery will be at least another few weeks but she is able to eat again, having daily laser on her wounds, and will be home with her family soon. We are so proud of our teams dedication and skilled care in nursing Emmy day and night. If your pet has a wound or if you do for that matter we would recommend a Tetanus vaccination. Although Tetanus is quite a rare occurrence nowadays it is potentially in the soil, If the bacteria makes its way into the blood stream you and your pet can become very ill.We have the tetanus anti toxin vaccination for your pets please ask us for more information.

12.01.2022 We would like to thank everyone who applied to be part of the team . We have successfully filled the position .

10.01.2022 We all know Dogs love to feel the wind in their ears and enjoy being in the back of a truck. Sadly we have recently had a few dogs that have fallen from the ute whilst still on their lead, consequently they have been dragged alongside the vehicle. The best way to avoid this happening is to short lead your pet . Make sure the lead length keeps them within the tray this ensures they are not able to fall out . Your pet will be very grateful.

06.01.2022 We love Cats they are certainly entertaining and unique make sure your up to date with vaccinations , if your unsure please give us a call

04.01.2022 Sadly we have had a few pets present with Gastro mainly due to Rat Baits. Here is some information about signs and symptoms to look for . Please bring your pet and the bait packet to the clinic so we may do our best to help your pet. How will rat bait affect your pet?... Rat bait acts as an anticoagulant (prevents the blood from clotting) by depleting the bodys supply of vitamin K. Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin which is essential in the formation of clotting agents in the blood stream. It can take anything from 1-5 days after ingestion to begin to see the signs of intoxication. What are the signs of rat bait toxicity? Signs of intoxication are associated with bleeding and can range from very subtle signs such as pin point haemorrhages on the gums to frank bleeding from anywhere. Normal everyday movement results in micro damage to blood vessels at the capillary level. When the bodys clotting mechanism is working properly, these damages are repaired immediately without us being aware of it. However, when our clotting system is not working, these minute traumas are not repaired and continue to bleed and thus may result in any of the following signs:- pale gums or small pin point haemorrhages on the gums lethargy bruising under the skin blood in the urine or faeces bleeding from the nose continued bleeding from small wounds or cuts Other signs (as a result of blood oozing into body cavities/ organs) may include: vomiting and or diarrhoea coughing or respiratory difficulties (laboured or rapid breathing) lameness seizures or muscle tremors What to do you suspect your pet has rat bait toxicity? If you see your pet eating rat bait it is important to bring them straight to the vet. If you are unable to, please ring us for advice immediately. If you havent seen your pet ingest rat bait but notice signs that may relate to ingestion then we also advise you to see us as soon as possible. If you have a box of the rat bait please bring this in with you or find out the name and active ingredients. What happens if your cat or dog eats a rodent that has consumed rat bait? The effects on a pet which has consumed rat bait will depend on which rat bait was ingested, how long ago, and how much of the rodent was eaten. It is important that you bring them straight to the vet. If you are unable to, please ring us for advice immediately. What does treatment involve? This will depend on the severity of the toxicity and timing of ingestion. Blood may need to be taken for clotting tests and to assess for anaemia. Treatment may be as simple as giving vitamin K tablets for 3-6 weeks or may require more intensive treatment such as blood transfusions and hospitalisation. In some cases even with the most intensive treatment some animals may die. If you suspect your pet has eaten rat bait, your pet needs to see a veterinarian immediately.
