23.01.2022 On May 13 , 2017 we heard about the early history of the bus shelter ( now demolished) back in late 70's as a place where young upstarts gathered and the community house engaged the kids, fed them, got them to do tasks and they didn't vandalize the centre. Community development 101. But still, local government knows best......
23.01.2022 Hmmm.... the improvement that we had to have. Welcome to Emerald.
22.01.2022 Sharing. Please keep your eyes open and hope she comes home safe.
19.01.2022 We fought against having a glass bus shelter in front of our community house for reasons exactly like this. Well documented. Weeks of broken glass around a shelter used by children. #NotTheFirstTime
19.01.2022 Art on a bus shelter... what a great idea.
18.01.2022 There was some excitement in Emerald today.... stay tuned for the final product.
16.01.2022 Long live the Emerald Bus Shelter - part of our history now to be preserved in a permanent installation. A unique idea that has been captured in technicolour in the "Resilient Melbourne Strategy", shared on Monash Uni's Accident Research Centre Fb as a resilience project, a mention at the recent Resilient Australia Awards, immortalised images including Pokemon Go with over 2400 supporters and international following. Every picture tells a story. ECH continues to enterta...in requests for academic essays and hosting community development students who want to study more about 21st century community development practice and resilience. Our Introduction to Community Development Practice course is full. With representation now on Victoria's Department of Premier and Cabinet's Research Institute on Social Cohesion, we can explore the responsibilities of local government in supporting or diminishing social cohesion, diversity and "welcome zones" in our communities. A perfect research case study...
15.01.2022 Hi everyone, thank you for your patience as we sorted out the final details of the agreement regarding the future of the now famous Emerald Bus Shelter. There was some confusion regarding whether there was to be a "joint" media statement or not but since council released a statement to local media and through their website/facebook page earlier in the week, we assume we can now publish this statement which was finalised yesterday. Council and Community House come together on... bus shelter Members of the committee of Emerald Community House (ECH) met with Council officers and Cr Leticia Wilmot on Thursday 21 July in a meeting organised by Lawyer, Marcus Adams, acting on behalf of Emerald Community House Agreement has been reached for the existing shelter to be replaced with a heritage style bus shelter. The seating in the new shelter will cater for 3 people as well as meeting disability compliance standards for all-ability access and will be located closer to the bus stop for anyone who prefers this. At the request of the ECH, the replacement bus shelter will be painted a heritage cream colour to match the colour scheme of the church hall, located behind the bus stop. Both parties have agreed to the existing mosaic artwork being removed from the existing shelter and re-installed in the vicinity of the existing bus shelter once removed. Further the ECH intend to propose other artworks to be installed on the replacement shelter, which proposals will be considered by the Council in good faith. A memorandum of understanding will be developed between Council and ECH for maintenance of the mosaic artwork and the shelter. It was agreed that Council will own and maintain the new shelter and ECH will maintain the artwork. The two parties agreed that the new bus shelter would not be used as a community noticeboard. Council and ECH will work together to install additional bench seating (for those people who would prefer not to sit so close to the road) and a community noticeboard at the site of the previous bus shelter. The new shelter will be installed as soon as scheduling of works can be finalised. The photo below (by Neil Creek) as part of the Portraits of Emerald Exhibition throughout Emerald in August) shows just a few of the many people who spent time at the shelter over the weeks of the campaign. It was wonderful to meet so many passionate and dedicated people during this time and hear their stories about what the shelter and the battle meant to them. These people are smart enough to know that it was about much more than a bus shelter. It was about place making and about who decides what's best for our community. It's about how our elected representatives at many levels represent us or don't and about how obvious that is to people. Thank you to the thousands of people who supported the campaign in some way. We look forward to the next exciting stages for this important place in our town.
15.01.2022 New exhibition site for arts, community interest and place making. Celebrating resilience, community enterprise, partnership and participatory democracy.

09.01.2022 The spirit and vision of the Emerald bus shelter transcends the physical structure. There is no restriction on development of a good idea.
