21.01.2022 COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update Dear all, Weve sought, throughout lockdown, to be consistent and transparent in our communications, and feel that having a scheduled update of our most recent position helps that. We also feel its important to maintain a routine, and to ensure that our community and external stakeholders can easily access our most up-to-date position. Further, whilst the lack of confirmed return dates may appear to indicate that little has changed, significant... progress is being made behind the scenes around our operational plans and protocols. This will allow us to return in time, and we continue to collaborate with the relevant bodies and agencies in different parkrun territories around the world. Over the last week particularly, weve seen a number of announcements as governments updated their guidance, and numerous sporting and physical activity groups responded accordingly. In some countries, we have seen the return of small-scale elite and community sports events, with various additional protocols in place. Importantly, as an independent charity with a global remit, we do not sit under any governing bodies and are therefore responsible for creating our own guidelines to return and, where required, achieving sign-off from relevant public health authorities. This work continues behind the scenes and well share developments publicly as soon as it is appropriate to do so. At the same time, we continue to gather insight from parkrunners around their intentions and attitudes about returning to parkrun and, as always, decision-making needs to consider the role played by our wonderful volunteer teams. Thanks for your continued support. Tom

20.01.2022 Heres the latest weekly update from Tom Williams, parkrun Chief Operating Officer We are getting through this, together. http://parkrun.me/akl8r... #loveparkrun

20.01.2022 COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update Dear all, Over the last few months weve attempted to keep things as simple as possible, to focus on the critical tasks required, and to provide clarity around our decisions. This week wed like to take the opportunity to revisit part of our strategy for reopening parkrun. As countries relax their respective lockdown restrictions we find situations where certain events could operate (legally and safely) but are having to wait for other events (t...hat could be many thousands of miles away) to be in the same position. For example, in Poland many (but not all) parkrun events have attendance records someway short of the 150 participant limit currently allowed by their Government. Some states of Australia have relaxed restrictions such that parkrun could return, whilst this isnt the case in other states. The Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, and the Falkland Islands may be considered technically able to start, but the UK as a whole is some way from it being appropriate to relaunch our events. Reopening specific regions within parkrun countries brings with it many complexities, not least the need to understand more localised public health guidance, respond accordingly, and ensure that we dont create issues for neighbouring regions. As such, at this time, our policy remains that we will only open parkrun events where we can safely and appropriately open every event in that country. We would particularly like to thank those events waiting patiently, and to assure them all that we are mindful of their situations and will continue to review our position on this as time progresses. We are also being asked, across the UK, Ireland, and Australia, whether junior parkrun events (2k events on Sundays for those aged 4 to14) could reopen before the Saturday 5k events. This is something weve looked at closely and, whilst we wouldnt rule anything out, its unlikely that this is something we would do. Again, there would be many things to consider, and we understand how children are much less vulnerable to the disease, but we know that for every 100 children in attendance at junior events there are around 110 adults (volunteering, spectating, walking or running). Also, in the UK for example, there are nearly 300,000 children (aged 4 to 14) registered to Saturday 5k events, who could switch to junior events, and a significant increase in participants could have a hugely detrimental effect on what is a delicate operating model responsible for safeguarding very young children. Thanks, as always, for your patience, understanding, and support. We continue to monitor the situation globally, and are more confident by the day that parkrun will return across all parkrun countries. We are getting through this, together,

17.01.2022 COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update Dear all, We can now confirm that parkrun events across the world will be suspended until the end of June. Please note that this represents a minimum time-frame for all parkrun countries and we expect most, if not all, closures to be in place for longer. Despite this announcement of extended closure, our view of the future is increasingly optimistic as the situation continues to change rapidly and dynamically across the world. There is now a def...inite and positive move towards relaxation of restrictions, and every week we get closer to the point where parkrun events will return to their communities. As lockdown restrictions start to lift across some territories in which we operate, wed like to thank everyone for not going to their parkrun venues, at parkrun time. Importantly, please do not organise group gatherings of any sort at your parkrun locations until such time as parkrun events have officially returned in your region. This is critical in order to preserve the excellent relationships we have with local communities and stakeholders, as well as to ensure the safety of both parkrunners and other users of the space. We continue to be cautious and thoughtful about parkruns return and we will, at all times, consider region-specific national and international government and public health guidance. Whilst parkrun cannot recommence in any territory until the guidance allows, the restarting of parkrun will be a complex and sensitive process. It is imperative that any decision to recommence has the full and widespread support of volunteer teams, and the wider community. A major part of our energy over the next few weeks will be focused on gathering this understanding and insight, which will in turn inform our decision making. Understanding the sentiment and feeling of our volunteers and communities is particularly key, as when the decision is made to restart parkrun, all parkrun events in that region will be required to start. Any events remaining closed would significantly and unreasonably increase pressure on those that open. Volunteer happiness and welfare will always be at the heart of what we do and, prior to reopening any events, we will continue to collaborate with our communities in order to best understand local situations and implement appropriate processes in advance. Thanks for your continued parkrun passion. We are getting through this, together, See more

10.01.2022 parkrun Australia COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update Dear all, In this update we would like to provide additional information to explain the progress in obtaining government approval to reopen parkrun in each state and territory:... Queensland (Qld) Queensland Health currently requires phone numbers to be collected for all participants and spectators to assist with contact tracing. This is not a straightforward process for three main reasons. Firstly, between March 2019 and March 2020 when our events closed, 95,000 different people walked or ran at the 107 Queensland parkruns while 15,000 people volunteered. 65,000 of these people had registered with parkrun prior to March 2019, which gives an idea of the volume of people who are signed up with parkrun who would need to be contacted retrospectively. Consequently, for parkrun to obtain phone numbers for all existing participants in Queensland alone, we would need to contact more than 100,000 people to ask them to log into their parkrun account and update their details, while also asking new registrants to do the same. Secondly, if we did attempt to request this level of data, it is not clear what percentage of phone numbers we would need to collect to be compliant with Queensland Health’s requirements. Finally, as borders begin to reopen, we must also consider there will be people taking part in Queensland parkruns who are from interstate and therefore we would not have their contact telephone number. As a reference, Queensland Health has previously requested assistance with contact tracing following a measles outbreak near one of our events in 2019. We were able to comply with this request quickly and accurately using the contact information of participants that was available to us. We are continuing to work with the Sport and Recreation Department, and the Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young, to determine a practical solution. Additionally, Queensland Health requires hand sanitiser to be provided to all participants in the same way as NSW Health. For the reasons set out in our New South Wales update above, we have requested our events reopen under the sanitising procedures detailed in our COVID-19 Framework.

05.01.2022 International Womens Day parkrun 7th March 2020. parkrun research tells us that women are much less likely to participate in parkrun, and parkrun is taking steps to change that. As part of these efforts parkrun is organising a global female-focused parkrun celebration on Saturday 7 March 2020, the day before International Womens Day (IWD).... We would love for our parkrun community to join parkruns worldwide in a celebration of female participation on this day. To mark the occasion we are encouraging existing parkrunners to bring along a female friend, family member or a work colleague, especially one who has never been to parkrun before. If you wish you may also dress in purple (parkruns chosen colour for the day, and the official colour of IWD).
