24.01.2022 Happy Tuesday everyone! We'd love you all to meet this beautiful girl, Bowie! Bowie was a referral to us from her regular vet after she was witnessed playing with a black snake! Tests were done at her regular vet, where it was found to be positive for a black snake envenomation. ... Her owners rushed her down to us after her initial blood test showed she had prolonged blood clotting times (a typical side effect from a black snake envenomation). Bowie had an IV catheter placed and was administered the snake anti-venom within the first 30 minutes of arriving to our hospital. Despite having the vial of anti-venom, Bowie's blood clotting times and CK** were still increasing which indicated signs of a re-envenomation occurring, so the decision was made to administer another snake anti-venom vial. After the second vial, Bowie's blood clotting times reduced as did her CK, and showed that she was on the road to recovery. Bowie stayed with us for a total of 5 days. She was the perfect patient throughout her stay with us, and was so brave. Thanks to the dedicated staff at Emergency Vets 24/7 and her devoted humans, Bowie is now back at home with her family and enjoying every minute of it. **(creatine kinase - blood tests that measures the amount of CK in the blood, CK is an enzyme that leaks out of damaged muscle. When elevated CK levels are found in a blood sample, it usually means muscle is being destroyed by some abnormal process, such as a muscular inflammation)

22.01.2022 Were researching poo to help your pets! In conjunction with The University of Queensland, Emergency Vets 24/7 is investigating potential causes of Haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE). This is a horrible, very dangerous condition that often requires hospitalisation, intense treatment and is all too common in Cairns. We will soon be collecting faecal samples from healthy dogs (as a baseline) and dogs with diarrhoea and HGE. ... In the meantime, if you would like to participate in our research, please fill in this anonymous questionnaire and await our call to arms for collecting your dogs poo! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/petparaware
21.01.2022 **We are open 24/7 over this Easter weekend!** Now that important announcement has been declared... Let's talk about chocolate... It is undeniably well known in this day and age that chocolate is toxic to our four legged friends. ... Theobromine is the chemical found in our delicious sweet treats that our furry friends cannot metabolise as well as humans can, therefore this can make them more susceptible to the chemicals’ effects. Chocolate additionally contains caffeine, which is also toxic to animals. We want your pets to be safe, happy and healthy as well as yourselves over this Easter weekend, however if your inquisitive pooch or curious feline somehow finds yours or the Easter Bunny’s hidden stash, we are here 24/7 should you need us. Remember; if in doubt, give us a shout on 4015 3459 and speak to one of our friendly, qualified team members. We hope you all have a safe and happy easter! From the team at Emergency Vets 24/7
21.01.2022 Lock up your Easter bunnies peeps! Its not even Easter yet but many innocent chocolate bunnies have already fallen victim to the sly chocolate thiefs in your homes. Home isolation is bringing out the naughtiness in your pet population! The most common culprits identify them selves as Labradors and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, but be vigilant around them all. They will find your stash! Dont let them ruin your kids Easter, no doubt these goodies will be difficult to repla...ce as word gets around . As always, we are open 24/7 all day, everyday, including Easter. Contact us any time on 4015 3459 anytime to speak to our friendly, qualified staff. We hope you all have a safe and happy Easter From the team at Emergency Vets 24/7, Cairns. *photo credit: ack.org

19.01.2022 Always making sure we are top of our game.
18.01.2022 In light of the recent tragedies that have been going on down south in our beautiful country, we are so devastated about the loss of many homes as well as our native wildlife. We gathered as many things as we possibly could and sent them down to those amazing vets, nurses and volunteers in need of anything and everything to help save our injured and recovering native animals. We would like to enormously thank @fnqwildlifedrive for driving our donated goods all the way down south to both New South Wales & Victoria. We would also like to say a huge thank you to all those who are volunteering and nursing the injured animals back to health, as well as the brave firefighters and volunteers who fought long and hard to try and keep us all safe. We are so very grateful to have such wonderful people in this world.
18.01.2022 This year’s Christmas miracle was Luna and her 8 pups. After 6 born naturally she had to have a caesarian section for her last 2. Pups and Mum have made a great recovery and have gone home to enjoy the rest of the Christmas evening.
17.01.2022 **PARALYSIS TICKS ARE HERE AND THEY CAN BE FATAL!** In the last 2 weeks alone, we have seen over 25 paralysis tick cases! That averages out to be almost two tick cases a day. The beautiful Ruby (pictured below) was one of those 25 tick cases. When she presented, she was unable to stand and had a mild increase of respiratory effort. Upon thorough examination, we found 2 paralysis ticks found underneath her chin. ... Ruby went downhill very quickly. Once in hospital, she started regurgitating, her breathing effort increased and she started to become very distressed as the effects of the toxin started to target her gag reflex, reducing her ability to swallow. When we started our diagnostic tick clip on her, we found an additional tick on the base of her tail. Ruby spent a total of 10 days in our hospital, with 24 hour constant monitoring as well as sedation to help her relax until the affects of the toxin moderately wore off. Rubys story is a huge success, but unfortunately not all tick paralysis stories have happy endings. One of the problems with paralysis ticks is they dont always present the same and all animals react slightly differently. Some people can pull off a tick and no further treatment is needed, sadly this is very rare. If you find a paralysis tick on your pet, always get them checked by a vet. Thanks to Rubys devoted owners, the dedication of our staff and Rubys "Im not giving up, Im going to fight this" attitude, she walked out of here and into mums arms once again a few days ago. Wed like to take this time to say PLEASE ENSURE YOUR ANIMALS ARE ALL UP TO DATE WITH TICK PREVENTION. Ensure you buy your flea, tick and worming products from a reputable source. Ensure theyre for the correct weight ranges (puppies grow quickly, so until theyre fully grown please weigh them each month and only give them a monthly protection treatment) and you are consistent with giving the product. Your beloved animals going overdue even by a few days can prove to be fatal. If you are at all concerned about your animals tick prevention, please speak to your local GP clinic about choosing a product thats right for you and your pet. Always remember, were here if you need us, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week every day of the year.
16.01.2022 Thankyou so much for your care of Bubbles, you are all amazing. It was so easy to talk to you all and Bubbles is now home. Its been a big 5 days for her, but you never gave up - thankyou
15.01.2022 *STORY TO COME* Part 1/2 It is so, unbelievably important to ensure every single one of your animals are up to date with tick prevention here in FNQ. Those vicious paralysis ticks are out in full swing, and love to come down off of the wildlife in the raining season. Buddy (shown in this video) is on a ventilator here, due to him being too weak to be able to breathe properly from a paralysis tick located by us here in hospital. The ventilator gives artificial respiration whi...lst the animal is in an induced coma to allow adequate gas exchange, especially to remove toxic carbon dioxide from the body. Stay tuned for part 2 of Buddy’s story Monday at 5:30pm!
14.01.2022 Hi, my name is Lexi, and I am lovely, but dont really know my limits. A few weeks ago I ran myself so hard at home that I nearly died of heat stress. I started to seizure, my blood started to break down and my heart went crazy. It wasnt any fun, I wouldnt recommend it.... It was touch and go and took several days of intense treatment, but the guys at Emergency Vets 24/7 managed to save me. You cant see it here, but they also shaved lots of my beautiful hair off to help cool me. Just remember that even though we think its getting cooler, its still hot during the day if you wear a fur coat, so make sure there is plenty of access to water for energetic dogs like myself, and dont let us run around lots during the heat of the day.
14.01.2022 Found: A deceased male blue point british short hair cat was found deceased on the corner of Pease Street. He is microchipped but unfortunately details aren’t up to date. Please contact the clinic on 4015 3459 if you have any further information.

13.01.2022 Want to make a real difference to someone’s life? maybe one day you might be the one to save it. The incidence of depression and suicide in the veterinary industry is a well known but often overlooked problem. It’s one of the highest rates of any job. The exceptional men and woman who work themselves to this point aren’t in it for the money, they earn far less than you would expect and often work gruellingly long, intense hours under difficult circumstances. They bear the emo...tional burden, but their professionalism means you won’t see the pain of going straight from a traumatic euthanasia directly into another consult like there’s no hurt behind their eyes. But you can make a difference. The way vets and nurses are treated by clients makes all the difference. Veterinary staff are only human, however we might treat them as robots or super heroes, they just want to know when they've helped someone, they want you to know how much they care. Sometimes the situation is dreadful and there isn’t anything they can do about it, and that hurts them too, the difference is they deal with that same hurt day in day out, and it weighs on them. Every month at our staff meetings we read out every card, review and comment from Facebook and Google. We hang the cards around the staff room and share the chocolates and the photos of the flowers. Our staff are sensational and we want them to be appreciated. They work so hard to help as much as they can. If you want to help with this burden, it’s as simple as letting them know. We don’t need presents of wine or chocolate, although these are much appreciated, we just need kind words, write a review, send a card, let them know they went above and beyond. Don’t just do it for our hospital, do it for any vet practice you visit. Don’t give false praise of course, but if someone has saved your pet or gone the extra mile, show them you care and it will be repaid back to you in kind. Share this post and help improve peoples lives, reduce veterinary depression and suicide rates as well as getting a better quality of vet care.

Chocolate additionally contains caffeine, which is also toxic to animals. ... 07.01.2022 Life after Lepto We want everyone to meet Chester! Chester is a 12 month old Kelpie x Border Collie. He was referred to our isolation facility by his General Practice clinic so that he could receive 24 hour care after he was diagnosed with Leptospirosis. ... Leptospirosis an infectious disease that affects the liver and kidneys and can cause extensive damage to these organs. Leptospirosis is highly prevalent in Far North Queensland and can be contracted through coming into contact with urine from infected hosts such as rats and bandicoots. Leptospirosis is ZOONOTIC, which means it is also transmissible to humans. This can be transmitted to humans via abrasions, skin wounds, contact with mucous membranes or accidental ingestion of contaminated urine or water. After 12 days of intensive 24 hour care in our hospital, Chester was finally reunited with his family! He will continue to visit us here at the hospital for follow up blood tests to monitor his renal and hepatic function. Despite Chesters severe illness, his pleasing nature has endeared him into the hearts of all the staff here at Emergency Vets 24/7! We are all so happy that Chester is now back home and resting comfortably. We want to praise and thank his devoted humans - Chloe and George. You can follow Chesters progress on his personal instagram account - @chester_thewonderdog

05.01.2022 My name is Tilly, Im 13 years old, and Ive been in hospital for nearly two weeks! Ive even spent days in a special oxygen chamber because I couldnt breath properly, and I havent been able to chew or swallow, so Ive been fed through a tube. Its lucky Im a good girl because Ive needed 24-hour medical attention, and I am proudly, slowly, getting better. The truth is, I ate some rotten meat just over two weeks ago (when I wasnt a good girl). Its likely the meat was con...taminated by bacteria called Clostridium botulinum, and the toxin it produced had seriously paralysed almost all of my body, even my eyelids. The same toxin is used in Botox, so maybe Ill come out looking younger! Recovering from botulism means there is a still a long road ahead of me. The nurses and vets here have been fantastic, doing regular physiotherapy and giving me 24 hour intensive care. Now I can eat by myself again, I can say the room service is pretty good. My legs are getting stronger by the day. This is me watching the sunrise with one of my nurses Chelsea on a wet Sunday morning, because the team here believes looking after the mind is just as important as looking after the body. Love, Tilly. xx A word from Tillys critical care team: we have been overjoyed to watch Tilly go from strength to strength! She gave us a scare, but its so rewarding to have a positive story to tell in these troubling times. A quick reminder that we are the only true 24-hour hospital in Cairns and the whole of FNQ and we work with most GPs in the area. We have vets and nurses on-site and working 24 hours a day in rotating shifts, all day every day of the year. We arent on call, we dont pop in to do middle of the night checks. We are always here and we never, ever close. Stay safe and stay home, but if you need us, dont hesitate to call.
05.01.2022 To reassure you that we are taking this pandemic seriously, every staff member now has their temperature taken before entering the hospital. The problem is, we didnt exactly remember how to take temperatures on humans...
03.01.2022 **update** owner has been found and reunited This beautiful girl was found on Birch Street roundabout. If you recognise her please call us on 07 4015 3459. Proof of ownership required.
03.01.2022 ***We want your pets poo!!*** In conjunction with The University of Queensland, Emergency Vets 24/7 is investigating potential causes of Haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE) as well as researching into the horrible parasite hookworm. These are both unpleasant, and can be very dangerous medical conditions that often require hospitalisation, intense treatment and is all too common in Cairns. We are now collecting faecal samples from healthy dogs (as a baseline) and also dogs ...with diarrhoea and bloody poo. This is a non-invasive, not for profit study, and Emergency Vets 24/7 will be donating their time and resources to help aid in the research against these awful conditions. Donating samples is free to you and all results will remain anonymous*. The samples will need to be freshly collected, stored in the fridge and dropped off to us at 124a Anderson Street, Manunda within 12 hours of collection. So, if its sloppy, hard, smelly or ordinary, if your animals pooping it - we want it! To register, come to the Hospital and collect your survey and sample pot. To help us even more, there is a separate survery that would also help us collect more information: www.surveymonkey.com/r/petparaware *Please note, no results will be given as this is all an anonymous study
02.01.2022 Storm season is here! Not only are the beautiful city and the surrounds we live in heating up, it's also time for the raining season! (Our lawns are all saying "thank the LORD") During this storm season, it's so important to remember that your animal's are TERRIFIED of the thunder. While we can't do anything to prevent this from occurring, we can do some things to help ensure the safety of our beloved furries this season: ... - Always make sure your animals are either inside or have a safe place to hide if you know a thunderstorm is approaching - Make sure all animals have not only collars on, but ID tags with your contact information, in case they do make a run for it, someone will be able to contact you if they can catch them - Take this time to make sure your animals microchip details are all correct with your up to date contact information registered to them - In severe anxiety cases, see your general practice vet and talk to them about what they can do to help your animal get through the storm season Remember, we are always here for you 24/7, should you ever need us. If in doubt, give us a shout! We hope you and your animals stay safe this storm season
02.01.2022 We dont always see only cats and dogs here at Emergency Vets 24/7 We love helping out our local vets and had the unique opportunity of working with Boongarry Veterinary Surgery to help with an ultrasound on a Koala last week! #welovewildlife #fnq #vetlife #emergencyvets247 #koala #australianwildlife
02.01.2022 Happy 3rd birthday to Emergency Vets 24/7! Thank you to Cairns and surroundings for your continued support, we love being here for you all. Wed also like to thank the local veterinary clinics for their help, support and collaboration. Over the past 3 years weve performed over 14,000 consultations, treated patients from the top of Cape York all the way down to the South of Townsville and as far inland as Mount Isa. We have successfully treated cases from puppies with bee... stings and cats with bladder troubles to infectious diseases such as leptospirosis and parvovirus, performed open chest surgeries and not forgetting the all too common paralysis tick cases. Once again, thank you for your continued support Cairns, cheers to the next three years!
01.01.2022 ** PARVOVIRUS IS IN CAIRNS ** Parvovirus is an extremely contagious and lifethreatening disease in dogs with a high fatality rate. Your dog can get this virus from other dogs OR from the environment (your backyard), especially with our recent wet weather. We have seen multiple cases of this recently. Parvovirus signs include depression, abdominal pain, vomiting and bloody diarrhoea.... This disease can be PREVENTED with VACCINATIONS, so please ensure your dogs vaccines are up to date today and if you are unsure call your local G.P. 01.01.2022 Hello lovely clients; as of 5pm today (29th March) the government has made it mandatory for people to wear masks in 'indoor spaces', that includes our hospital. All our staff will be wearing masks, please support them by wearing your mask without having to be asked. For as long as it is mandated, you will need to wear a mask to enter our hospital. There is still hand sanitiser just inside the front door and on the reception wall.... Please share this so that everyone knows.
01.01.2022 Part 2/2 It's time for another success miracle!! Everyone met Buddy last week when we posted the video of him on the ventilator. This is Buddy's story... Buddy came to us as a referral from Weipa. Upon presentation Buddy was gaging and retching. Soon after we found a very large paralysis tick on his left ear! ... Buddy deteriorated very quickly whilst in hospital, so much so that we decided to do a blood gas blood test, which, among other things assesses the quality of respiration. We found the levels to be high, which indicated that Buddy's body was not eliminating carbon dioxide efficiently and his oxygen stats were dropping, so the call was made (at 2am on a Saturday morning) to put Buddy on the ventilator. A ventilator is a machine that gives artificial respiration whilst the animal is in an induced coma to allow adequate gas exchange, especially to remove toxic carbon dioxide from the body. Buddy was on the ventilator for 48 hours before the weaning process took place. Whilst on the ventilator, he was constantly monitored by both nurses and vets, doing vital checks every hour, blood gases every 6 hours, mouth and oral care every 4 hours and a lot of TLC. We are so incredibly happy to say that Buddy was successfully weaned off of the ventilator and returned home to his family 5 days later. Remember to ensure your animals are all up to date with their tick prevention and to always check them daily! We're here for you whenever you need us, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
