25.01.2022 I’ve come across this big stripey a couple of times now. I distinctively remember her one because of her large size and two because of the row of old scars just in front of her dorsal fin. I can only assume that these scars are from the propeller of a boat. 18.01.2022 Today is #sharkawarenessday so here is a photograph of my most favourite shark ever, also one of the most misunderstood animals ever - the tiger shark! We need sharks in our oceans. They are a token of a healthy ocean. . You can see that this animal is not interested in me as prey as I swim inches away from her. In no ocean are these animals outwardly trying to hunt us, attack us, hurt us or eat us. Although we need to be aware that these are wild animals and that we should ...use caution around them just like every other wild animal. . Some people go their whole lives being afraid or nervous of sharks so when people see their very first shark here on the Ningaloo it warms my heart. 16.01.2022 ORCAS The thing I am most intrigued about with orcas is their emotional intelligence. They are extremely social, intelligent, emotional and protective beings. I could definitely see this as it looked like the two females were guarding the young calf while trying to evade the boats nearby. A larger male was further away and I believe he was trying to distract the boats from this pod of three and lead us astray. We are very closely connected to these animals and the ocean. Whil...e I was screaming from excitement - experiencing my first ever orcas - I felt incredibly blessed to be able to see these animals free in the oceans. No animal of such intellect and innocence should have to endure a lifetime of imprisonment and slavery for the sake of entertainment. 11.01.2022 It’s been a while since I’ve posted a photograph. it’s also been a while since I’ve seen a manta ray line feeding which is what this manta ray was doing today. Line feeding is when a manta ray feeds in a straight line then swiftly turning 360 back the other way. This is done repetitively along the ocean floor - zig-zagging through the water to scoop up as much food as possible. Because they are unimaginably fascinating and unique with their incredible senses and abilities. Because they’ve been in our oceans for millions of years - perfecting ocean animal evolution. 07.01.2022 I didn’t grow up on the ocean. I lived about as far away from it as you could imagine living in the north west of Canada. I was always fascinated by marine animals - as a child when I visited the cold pacific ocean in Canada as a child I was amazing even by star fish and crabs scurrying along the rocky beaches. So when I first experienced snorkelling and scuba diving in Australia when I was 11 years old I was truly blown away and felt even more drawn to it, even as a child. I...t’s a beautiful colourful alien world that I am still truly blown away by every day. I feel as though most humans are amazed and drawn to the ocean - otherwise why would the majority of the population live by the coast? If you love the ocean and appreciate it then don’t take it for granted. Do what you can to help protect it no matter how small the action you make is and know that everything you do makes a difference. My ever growing love for manta rays is one of the many reasons for my conservation based efforts and I hope to contribute to the protection of these animals. 06.01.2022 Why should we be buying cotton, hemp, bamboo or other renewable clothing products over synthetic made ones? How does this potentially affect animals such as manta ray’s, whale sharks or whales? For one, humans need to source the synthetic material ie oil mining (we all know that we need to reduce this already). Secondly, once the clothing item is thrown out, it is non-biodegradable and is just as bad as other oil-made products such as plastic bottles or similar. Finally thoug...h, the thing that most people don’t even think about is when we do a load of washing. Those micro fibres coming off of your clothing and getting washed down the drain during a load of washing will eventually make its way into the oceans. For filter feeders such as manta rays they may ingest these fibres. No plastic or micro-plastics are good to ingest for any animal. Too much can potentially kill them - it’s not fair for the animal. Next time you decide to buy an item of clothing I urge you to consider the affects it may have on our wildlife and consider buying renewable made clothing or second hand clothing. 05.01.2022 I feel extremely fortunate to have placed 3rd in the 2020 @australianphotographyawards Ecstatic doesn’t even come close to how I’m feeling after having this photo place and having another image shortlisted. I am absolutely over the moon with these results! Just over a year ago I moved to coral bay Ningaloo reef where I kickstarted my career as a professional underwater photographer. During this time I’ve entered into three different known photography competitions where I’ve h...ad one photo place as highly commended in the up and coming category, the second competition I didn’t place at all and then of course this competition. This has truly enlightened me on how much I have grown as a photographer and as an ocean advocator which I hope shows in my work. Even though I only have a small social media following I do hope that my photography and knowledge encourages people to make small or big life changes. This undoubtedly is the only real reason why I have social media and the only reason why I want to grow my following. It is animals such as this leopard shark that make me want to do better, to be better and ultimately protect life in the ocean world as well as the rest of the natural world since one cannot live without the other and neither can we. I was lucky enough to get this photo during the peak of COVID-19. Living in the tiny town of Coral Bay (with less than 100 residents at the time) our lockdown period consisted of many ocean adventures. This particular day we were searching in an area where manta rays are commonly present during the full moon but we saw none. Instead, the area was full of leopard shark action. I used this as an opportunity to challenge myself technically by experimenting with slower shutter speeds to capture the leopard sharks gracefully movements. With many unsuccessful attempts - this was one of the last frames I captured during this shoot. 04.01.2022 Yesterday was one of the most precious days of my life. Swimming with a humpback whale mother and calf then with the most magical manta rays. I couldn’t help but think these are some of the most sensational animals on this planet and we are responsible for the population decline of these animals as well as the rest of the earth’s natural beauties. This particular manta ray stole my heart as she truly danced in the crystal clear waters. When it was just her and I, she rose up ...from the ocean floor towards me and rolled onto her belly looking right at me eye to eye in curiosity for what felt like a lifetime not moving even slightly when I swam close to her. I found plastic floating near her and this broke my heart. I’m so truly sorry is what I told her, not just for our waste in her home, but for everything; everything that us humans do that impacts her and all other wildlife. And yet this manta ray trusted me being so close to her even though us humans can be so careless. In conclusion, I do not cry easily, but I cried my eyes out when I got back onto the boat for being able to witness everything that I did but also because I know that we don’t deserve this. Nature is too good to us humans and yet we are destroyers of it. We’ve been born into a world where it may be hard to protect it but we still can and we will. David Attenborough’s newest film on Netflix a life on our planet both devastated me and inspired me. Please watch it so you might feel the same. 02.01.2022 Sharks are more valuable on a shark than off. . One of the best things you can do to protect sharks is to support tourism in places that are shark hotspots. Countries in south-east asia and Central America is where much of the shark finning industry is based. By travelling to these places you are directly protecting sharks and other marine life as without the tourism industry sharks would otherwise be hunted and fished. ... .
