24.01.2022 Shinyin-yoku . . . Or Forest Bathing, is a long-held Japanese practice that has measurable positive effects on enhancing health and feelings of wellbeing ... . . . Taking time to slow down and simply be in nature, dis-connecting from emails, meetings and to-do lists and re-connecting through the senses has proven beneficial outcomes such as; lowering heart rate and blood pressure, and decreasing reactionary production of stress hormones such as adrenaline involved in the ‘fight or flight’ pace of busy days . . . One of the most impressive benefits of forest bathing is the boost to the immune system garnered by inhalation of phytoncides in forest air. These essential oils are naturally secreted by trees to protect against germs and insects, and are proven to increase activity of our own natural killer (NK) cells involved in fighting tumour formation and viral infections . . . This is where you’ll find me today, taking it slow and breathing deep . . . Read more about the positive effects Shinyin-yoku, or forest bathing can have on your health and well-being here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2793341/ . . . #shinyinyoku #forestbathing #nature #meditation See more

22.01.2022 Spring . . . Synonymous with the Wood element- spring brings growth, regeneration and flexibility Associated organs the Liver and Gall Bladder, together in charge of making and actioning decisions and plans, ensuring a smooth, clean flow of blood and energy. As the weather warms and the days lengthen, keep you mood and diet light and fresh and move your body regularly to relieve congestion and stuck emotions ... . . . An imbalance within the Wood element will often show-up in spring bringing a myriad of signs and symptoms including but not limited to; ~ Neck and shoulder tension ~ Hip pain ~ Lymphatic congestion= allergies, rashes and itchy skin outbreaks ~ Constipation ~ Dysmenorrhea and pelvic inflammatory conditions such as endometriosis ~ Emotional dysregulation including anger outbursts ~ Headaches ~ Reflux, nausea and digestive distress . . . Along with acupuncture, ways you can strengthen your Wood element include; Go with the flow, cultivate flexibility of the mind with stress-management techniques such as meditation, for calm, effective communication and problem solving, Keep on time and stick to plans with forethought, organisation and writing to-do lists, Move your body for strength and healthy circulation with vinyasa yoga and mountain hikes, Give your eyes a rest- invest in some blue-light blocking glasses, and/or limit screen time, Lighten up your diet with loads of green leafy veges, fresh sprouts, lemon juice and fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi, Take it easy with the cleansing and detox fads typically affiliated with spring. Yes it is a good idea to watch consumption of sugars, fats and limit pharmaceuticals where possible, but disharmony of the Liver can also arise from the over-use of harsh herbal preparations, strong detox/elimination protocols, and excessive supplements which all contribute to congestion of the lymphatic vessels in the Liver. As a result, detox pathways are compromised, toxins and hormonal waste accumulate and energy production is affected Always seek assistance from a health professional when considering a Liver cleanse

22.01.2022 Winter . . . Governed by the element of Water Winter brings the peak of Yin and is exemplified by dark, cold and slow properties of conservation and inactivity . It is recommended to sleep longer, rest more, warm and nourish your body with gentle exercise plus slow-cooked soups and stews ... . . . The organ systems related to Winter are the Kidneys and Bladder, inextricably linked and undeniably governed by water Emotions associated include fear, anxiety and depression, all of which may correlate to a stress induced dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system and subsequent hyper-sensitivity of the adrenal glands (which sit atop the kidneys). A heightened state of fight-or-flight (anxiety) and/or a consequential and chronic depletion of the body’s reserves (depression) may result . . . Other signs and symptoms we see regularly in the clinic that are synonymous with Winter and the Water element include; ~ Low back pain ~ Arthritic pain of the knees and joints ~ Urinary dysfunction ~ Fatigue and shortness of breath ~ Infertility and menstrual issues ~ Blood pressure irregularities . . . Along with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, here are a few ways you can cultivate a strong and balanced Water element: ~ Internal martial arts, yin yoga and deep, diaphragmatic breathing ~ Activities of turning inward, including self-reflection through journaling, reading and meditation ~ Conserve energy, and replenish strength through warm dietary choices such as bone broths, miso with seaweed, and roasted root vegetables flavoured with warming spices of garlic, ginger and black pepper. Of utmost importance year-round for healthy digestion, and in particular in Winter; swap out those cold, raw smoothies and avo toast for warm herbal tea and nourishing oat porridge with honey and cinnamon ~ Go to bed early, sleep in a little longer allowing your body to rest and recharge and most importantly... keep warm the Kidneys are particularly susceptible to the cold, so socks on and keep the low back covered! . . . 19.01.2022 Acupuncture . . . Nobody likes needles... Which is why it's important to get the word out there, that acupuncture pins are NOTHING like hypodermic needles!! .... . . For a start, the kind you find in your Dr's surgery are hollow, with a sharp, bevelled tip that, like a knife, slices through the skin... Perfect (and safe) for their intended purpose of extracting or injecting fluid into the body.... . . . Whereas acupuncture pins are thin, flexible and about the thickness of a strand of human hair! Furthermore, at a microscopic level, the tip is actually slightly rounded, more like a rocket, this allows for gentle movement through connective tissue layers and pushing aside of fibres . . . In the hands of a trained and accredited practitioner, acupuncture is a relaxing and painless experience . . . Of course depth of insertion and retention time will vary with intention and location...Sometimes we just might need to get the long pins out to release that glute medius! . . . Want to know more? Message me here with all your pointy questions . . . Image via pinterest #acupuncture #acupuncturepins #needles #traditionalchinesemedicine #japaneseacupuncture #health #wellbeing See more

19.01.2022 Autumn . . . In the Southern hemisphere we are transitioning into autumn, season of the Metal element, associated with structure, boundaries, inspiration and letting go ... . . . Organs related to the Metal element are the Lungs and Large Intestine, the latter, quite literally enables us to eliminate toxicity from our lives, allowing a cleansing and letting go of waste, along with self-limiting and negative mental attitudes and beliefs . . . Breathing in the clean, cool, autumn air brings inspiration and purity to our lives through the act of respiration of the Lungs, enabling facilitation of healthy boundaries, routines and appropriate expression of grief. Focussed breath-work and tonification of the Lungs aids cycles of creating, letting go of loss and dealing with separation . . . The Metal element also plays an integral role in the immune system; through the main pathway of airborne pathogens- the nose, also known as the doorway to the Lungs, and the skin- associated tissue of the Lungs. . . . All of this considered, we often see a re-emergence or appearance of conditions in the autumn connected to an imbalance within the Metal element, such as; ~asthma ~eczema ~cough ~impaired immune function ~constipation ~IBS ~depression And associated emotional symptoms such as unresolved grief and sadness. . . . Along with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, here’s a few ways you can assist to maintain or restore optimum balance to your Metal element: ~clear out clutter from your wardrobe, office space and spare room- hold a garage sale to let go of old and unwanted stuff ~mentally de-cluttering is also important- clear out limiting beliefs, negative attitudes and resolve old issues with yourself and others. Writing can be helpful, or enlist the help of a therapist ~ take time for slow, deep and focussed breaths through exercise such as yoga or tai chi, or strengthen the lungs with cardio activities including jogging, or swimming for a more low-impact option ~mineral dense foods such as organic leafy greens and pungent flavours of onions and garlic are also beneficial for the metal element . . via Pinterest See more

11.01.2022 Breathe . . Paying attention to your breath may be the key to homeostatic balance and optimal health......read on to find out more .... . . Our autonomic nervous system is regulated via a series of physiological, hormone-driven processes. The natural response to a threat is activation of the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS), aka ‘fight or flight’ and the subsequent suppression of the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS), or ‘rest, digest and heal’ mode. The former, begins with a surge of adrenaline, increased heart rate, and super-human strength.....helpful when faced with a life-threatening situation . . . The second component known as the HPA axis, keeps the adrenals actively releasing cortisol to sustain SNS engagement. Once danger has passed, biochemical and hormonal surges are balanced by endogenous feedback loops- the body shifts back into PNS . . . Fast-paced modern lifestyles of continual exposure to artificial stimulus, fear-based rhetoric and unrealistic deadlines, creates constant SNS engagement . . . Long-term, elevated cortisol levels can result in blood-sugar imbalances, insulin-resistant cells, weight-gain via an increase of visceral fat storage, suppression of the immune system, detox pathways and gut function. In a stress response- blood flow is prioritised to the heart, brain and limbs to escape danger, this leaves the gastro-intestinal tract and it’s processes of digestion and absorption under-resourced and dysfunctional . . . There are a number of ways to ensure we are cruising optimally in parasympathetic mode....Manage stress levels by improving time-management skills, reducing inflammatory foods, ensuring sleep quality is optimal, and incorporating movement practices such as yoga into daily life . . . Along with acupuncture, which has numerous positive benefits on autonomic bodily processes, breath-work is one of the most effective ways to regulate the nervous system. Deep, diaphragmatic breathing can slow the heart-rate and decrease cortisol levels, reduce anxiety and inhibit inflammation in the body. There are numerous tutorials online on breathing practices, or dm me here to find out more See more
