25.01.2022 This is the kind of leadership we need to see in politics.

24.01.2022 Vale Susan Ryan AO - we are saddened by the sudden passing of an inspirational Australia Labor woman. Susan was a pioneer for women in politics as the first in cabinet. Susan’s work for the representation and rights of women in Australia will not be forgotten. We thank her for being the first minister for women, her work towards the Sexual discrimination act 1984 and her ongoing activism for feminism

23.01.2022 Hear, hear Claire Wright. Although there is already a seat of Ryan in QLD, reckon we could do with a Kirner. And many more to lift the current 11% only named after our women leaders and sheros. Words matter, visibility of women's contribution and equal acknowledgement of their achievements matter. https://theconversation.com/we-have-enough-electorates-name

23.01.2022 The ACT election in Saturday October 17. Today's candidate spotlight is on Cathy Day, standing in Brindabella. Here's Cathy's Story - I love Tuggeranong and I care deeply about our community. Tuggeranong has been my home since 1989, and this is where my children were educated in our wonderful schools. I have seen Tuggeranong grow and I am proud to have been part of that growth, having been a founding member of three Tuggeranong community groups. I‘m standing for the Legislat...ive Assembly because I want to help that growth continue. I’m a member of the Salvation Army’s Tuggeranong Corps and was deployed to the Bombala Evacuation Centre and the Batemans Bay Recovery Centre during the 2019-20 bushfires. I’ve seen communities at their best and at their worst and feel that I can contribute to making Tuggeranong even better. The key issues in this area are public transport and healthcare, and these are issues that I hope to work on if I am elected. In my current job, I lead a team at the Australian National University’s National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health supporting research into a wide range of population health issues, including COVID-19. As the Secretary of the National Tertiary Education Union’s ACT Division I am standing up for the tertiary education sector and working with people facing the prospect of losing their jobs. I am really enjoying the opportunity to get out and meet fellow residents at street stalls - it’s a very real experience getting a small glimpse into their lives and to hear about the issues that concern them the most, or to hear about the great ideas they have. https://www.actlabor.org.au//brindabella-candid/cathy-day/

23.01.2022 Congratulations Nat Cook MP Katrine Hildyard MP Susan Close MP Irene Pnevmatikos and to everyone involved in the long journey to pass this legislation - Abortion Safe Access Zones. Thank you for your persistence and resolve in helping to ensure reproductive health care is available to all, safe, accessible and affordable, without intimidation and harassment.

23.01.2022 Algester has shown great trust in the wonderful Leeanne Enoch MP who has been returned with an even greater margin. Well deserved confidence for an excellent representative. Congratulations Leeanne and to all your team.

22.01.2022 End of year parties are happening, and there was much to celebrate in QLD. Enjoy a restful break after a hectic and successful campaign to everyone in QELAG.

22.01.2022 Have you seen Trish Doyle MP talk about coercive control in the media this week? So glad that conversations about domestic violence are being had in our mainstream media

20.01.2022 A terrific piece by Julia Gillard today on why Helen Reddy's "I am woman" resonates just as much today as it did when first released. And a reminder that Helen was more than just one song. Vale. https://www.abc.net.au//helen-reddy-i-am-woman-ju/11810546

20.01.2022 The answer to unequal representation is clear, affirmative action in winnable seats. Federal ALP has 50/50 by 2025 and is on target for women's representation. We also advocate for quotas for other unrepresented groups to achieve a truly representative democracy.... https://www.emilyslist.org.au/jgngi_report_2019 Have been watching the comments on this page throughout the day. The various versions of the "merit/best person for the job" argument does not acknowledge the prejudices of those already in power and the structural biases inherent in the patriarchal system. The data is in. Diversity in representation requires proactive leadership.

19.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all. Thank you for all your support this year. Extra special thanks to our Angel supporters and members We hope you and your families have a lovely Christmas - it may be very different this year, the year that has taught us how important it is to be with the ones we love.

19.01.2022 A huge shout out to Katrine Hildyard MP for her campaign that launched 2 years ago to achieve this outcome. It is disappointing but not unsurprising that the SA Liberal Govt has omitted acknowledgement of her contribution. Katrine, we see your hard work in bringing about the banning of Wicked Campervans offensive and sexist slogans. Congratulations from EMILY's List Australia

19.01.2022 Today is International Safe Abortion Day, 28 September 2020 We recommend you to the International Campaign for Women's Right to Safe Abortion Safe abortion is essential healthcare! *******************************************... Ensure universal access to safe abortion now! ****************************************************** "The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated differential access to safe and legal abortion around the world, both between and within countries during 2020. Many borders have been closed and lockdowns have confined women to their homes, making it difficult to access safe, legal abortions. Even where abortion is accessible, in-person and especially hospital-based abortion care have become considerably more difficult to obtain. The pandemic has exposed the damage caused by highly restrictive abortion laws. In some cases, unwilling doctors have used it as an excuse not to provide abortions by describing them as non-essential, non-emergency or routine care. For the most part, however, reduced access to abortion care has been a consequence of the pandemic itself. This has been and remains a rapidly changing scenario, and different countries have responded in different ways. We are only likely to find out the real extent of whether and how women were able to find abortions through health systems later." https://www.safeabortionwomensright.org/icwrsa-statement-/

18.01.2022 VALE Ruth Bader Ginsburg a pioneering woman who fought for the legal rights for women. She opened doors for women all around the world and was relentless in her fight. Sadly she lost her battle with cancer today. We thank you.

17.01.2022 LIVE at Kindy Patch Queanbeyan talking child care, women in the workforce and climate action with Anthony Albanese and Amanda Rishworth MP.

14.01.2022 In the news - Dr Sabrin Farooqui, member of the NSW Labor Policy Forum and a General Member of our National Committee, shares her thoughts on how the ALP can address the lack of diversity in our national, state and territory parliaments. You can read her article "Continuing Labor’s Progressive Path to the Future" in Challenge Magazine. ... https://www.challengemag.org//continuing-labor-s-progressi

06.01.2022 In this report from Jean Hailes for Women's Health there is more evidence of the disproportional impact on women during the pandemic. Still very little support from the Federal Government. This one stat alone should be ringing alarm bells - the decline in attending to basic health needs during the lock down has serious implications for long term health outcomes Highlights of the survey’s findings include: Almost three out of five women who experienced miscarriage and/or st...illbirth said they did not receive enough information and support to manage their loss. Almost one in four women experienced some form of intimate partner violence. Women with disabilities were more likely to experience controlling behaviour and physical violence, as were LGBTIQ women. Almost one in five women said they could not afford to see a health professional. Women with disabilities and LGBTIQ women were particularly disadvantaged. One in three women reported symptoms of anxiety and one in four reported symptoms of depression. Women aged 25-44 were busier than before COVID. They coped with longer working hours in their jobs and in their homes, as well as managing remote learning for children. Nearly one in three women in this age group did not have enough time to attend appointments for health checks See more

06.01.2022 Vale Helen Reddy - the woman who sung the great Feminist anthem I am Woman we have all sung at the top of our lungs embracing being a woman and roaring loudly. Another legend lost and certainly not forgotten. Sing it loud and proud in honour of a great woman https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rptW7zOPX2E

06.01.2022 The gender lens on recovery from the pandemic is absolutely essential. Vic Labor have a great panel discussion coming up soon, with three terrific ELA members - Lisa Darmanin, Wesa Chau and Mary Delahunty via zoom of course! October 1 at 6.30pm (AEST)

05.01.2022 Fantastic to see NSW Co-Convenor of EMILY’s List Trish Doyle Shadow Minister for Women and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence taking such an important issue to the NSW Parliament! NSW Labor MP Trish Doyle said the first section of the bill defines the "conduct that constitutes coercive control" listing "a number of behaviours that need to be proven as part of a pattern". "One of them, for example, says controlling, regulating or monitoring the other person's day-...to-day activities; another part says frightening, humiliating, degrading or punishing the other person." "That carries a maximum penalty of five years. Let's get this done!

05.01.2022 Absolutely thrilled for Sheena Watt MP - Australian Labor Party's first female Aboriginal MP in the Victorian Parliament. A wonderful first speech, congratulations Sheena Go well on this new journey
