21.01.2022 The old surgical adage: "See one, do one, teach one." This is a step-by-step operative video of a lumbar laminectomy using minimally-invasive right-sided hemilaminectomy approach, but decompression of spinal nerves on both sides. The operation was performed by one of my registrars at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital under my supervision. The patient had low back pain with inability to walk due to pain in both legs from spinal stenosis. The patient had an excellent outcome after... surgery with complete resolution of his symptoms. 19.01.2022 Last month was the International Brain Tumour Awareness week (October 24 - 31, 2020). Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive form of primary brain cancer, and is newly-diagnosed in approximately 1000 patients in Australia per year. It affects patients across all age groups. This patient presented with slurred speech, which was thought initially to be a mini-stroke (TIA). Ironically, his operation was performed during Brain Tumour Awareness week at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse,... and he made an excellent recovery, being discharged 4 days after surgery. Despite further advances in our understanding of GBMs, the prognosis still remains poor. This intraoperative video demonstrates what a brain tumour looks like, and how a brain tumour is removed. Yet, microsurgical resection remains a blunt and crude tool.
