24.01.2022 ‘Dance with the sensuous decadence that comes with knowing that you are larger than your containing spaces’ ~ Bayo Akomolafe I read this incredible section from... a poem by Bayo Akomolafe and it stopped me in my tracks. It summed up so perfectly the journey I see my students take from beginner to thriving dancer. Afraid to take up space, do the wrong thing, have ‘two left feet’, to be seen. When in reality dance is the complete antithesis of this notion. Dance teaches freedom!! To take up space, to soar, to fly......even when your feet are firmly planted on the ground. It gives you permission to walk a little taller, to fill your heart with joy and to move with abandon. Find your dance, dance your dance and be unapologetically YOU!!! @nicolezicchino #dancehealing #soulpath #alignment #divinefeminine #sacredfeminine #priestess #stepintoyourpower #gratefulheart #gratitudepractice #salsa #bellydance #dancewithcaragriffin #danceteacher

24.01.2022 This was jamila when I started studying in 1970 and then became part of Bal Anat. She changed my life. I went from playing Bassoon and teaching the San Francisco boys chorus and working with the SF Opera into the world of Belly Dancing and I never looked back.

24.01.2022 @dancersonsocialchallenge week 35!!

24.01.2022 Week 25 of #dancersonsocialchallenge! Famous Black Dancers through History. Now I’ve heard a little bit about Josephine Baker, I knew she was a bad ass, beautiful Vaudeville performer, I knew she was (and still is) an icon and I knew THAT Banana dress. However with just the littlest bit of research, I found out a whole lot that I had no idea about and it completely shone a new light on this amazing woman. Josephine Baker’s legacy is synonymous with sensuality, bravery and un...inhibited passion. World renowned performer, World War II spy, and activist are few of the titles used to describe Josephine Baker. One of the first black women to leave her mark on the dance world. One of the most successful African American performers in French history, Baker’s career illustrates the ways entertainers can use their platforms to change the world.Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Baker grew up with little and quickly developed an independent spirit, learning to provide for herself and make her own way. This free and bold behavior led her to perform across the country. By the time she sashayed onto a Paris stage during the 1920s, she was confident in her abilities and performed with a comic, yet sensual appeal that took Europe by storm. Baker went on to perform and choreograph for 50 years in Europe. Although racism in the States often restricted her from gaining the same renown at home as she did abroad, Baker fought segregation through organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The organization actually named May 20 Josephine Baker Day in honor of her efforts. In her lifetime, it is said she received approximately 1,500 marriage proposals and countless gifts from admirers, including luxury cars. On the day of her funeral, more than 20,000 people crowded the streets of Paris to watch the procession on its way to the church. Baker was the first American woman buried in France with military honors. #dancersofinstagram #josephinebaker #vaudeville #blackdancersmatter #blackdancehistory #iconicwomen #josephinebakerday See more

22.01.2022 #dancersonsocialchallenge with @kindviolet Week 33 I’ve got a heck of a lot of catch up but I’ve actually got a little bit of spare time to do that (for once) so here we go! What do you value most in dance class? This was super tricky but I think what I value most is to me, and a lot of the wonderful people I know, class is a safe space for them. A safe space to be themselves, learn, make mistakes and ask for help. My dance community in @bellydancecollective has fostered so... much love and care and be such a safe space for me and many other dancers. I have gained so many close friendships and learned so much because it’s such a beautiful space I love my dance classes and I miss it! But I’m getting back into it soon and I can’t wait #dancersofinstagram #bellydanceaustralia #bellydancersofinstagram #bellydancersofaustralia #dancespace #danceclassismyhappyspace #lovelightanddance #spoonymooners #bellydancersliveforever See more

22.01.2022 #dancersonsocialchallenge with @kindviolet Week 37 Performance Preferences! Improv vs Choreography? So a lot of my solos have been structured improv: I go in with a plan but nothing is set in stone.... And while it can be fun to dance that way sometimes, I’m really working towards creating more memorable and meaningful choreographies. We’re our own harshest critics and often when I improvise, I find my criticisms to be much harsher. I do love a good noodle, and a good structured improv but my goal is to become more proficient in creating (and remembering) my own choreography. I love performing other choreographies in a group, and am known as a ‘choreo sponge’ but for some reason have so much difficulty remembering my own! 20.01.2022 Dancers on social challenge week 30! Dancing Outside(ish) Song: God is a Woman by DJ Boomin (I do not own the rights to this audio plz don’t mute me) A little bit rushed, totally improv, probably a little bit s*@& ... Instagram is being silly and won’t let me share both videos from there.

19.01.2022 I’m loving Kami Liddle and her skate videos lately Inspiring me even more to give it go but I know I will look like a baby giraffe on wheels

19.01.2022 #dancersonsocialchallenge with @kindviolet week 24 SELF CARE! How are you taking care of yourself? I’ve been pretty open about my dance burnout throughout this year and spent about approximately 6 months just taking the time I needed to bounce back. Thankfully, I’m now recovering from that and more recently I’ve been taking charge of my health and body and going to some amazing classes at TAMbition Fitness Personal Training which I’m really enjoying. Becoming fitter and healt...hier has definitely made a difference to my self care routine. I’m struggling to get down time at the moment between my work, dance, working out, spending time with my partner, University and general household maintenance so that is definitely a work in progress. Naps are part of self care too I’m a busy little bee right now, but it’s a work in progress. #busybee #dancersofinstagram #selfcare #napsareselfcare #healthylifestyle #happinessisachoice #bellydancersofinstagram #youdoyou See more

17.01.2022 Week 26 #dancersonsocialchallenge with @kindviolet Online classes! I love the IDEA of online classes. I held a subscription to Datura Online and I made my practice plans and playlists filled with amazing and helpful videos...but I never used it. I don’t have as much opportunity to learn in person, especially with different teachers in Fusion. I loved that so many classes were available to us amidst the pandemic lockdown and if I weren’t so burnt out, I possibly would have co...mmitted to them. I really enjoy an ‘in classroom’ approach to learning. It’s hands on, more feedback and it’s a little more personal. I also make the time more easily when I get to go to a class, that’s my dance time! Paving out time for my own practice and online learning is something I’d love to improve on and will definitely have to in the next year or so, as attending classes for continual growth and learning isn’t always going to be an option. #onlinelearning #dancethedistance #dancersofinstagram #bellydancersofinstagram #australianbellydancer #transnationalfusionbellydance #fusiondancer #daturaonline See more

16.01.2022 #dancersonsocialchallenge week 34 @kindviolet What makes choreography interesting or fun for you? For me, I love just feeling really engaged by the music and just feeling it right in my bones. I had a lot of fun with this set and it’s one of my favourites because it was so much fun to perform as well as we had a lot of fun learning and practicing this one. I think obviously it has a lot to do with the music, if it’s catchy or if it makes me feel something then I’m going to ...love the choreography. Cara is an amazing choreographer and I’ve absolutely loved almost all the choreography that I have learned with @bellydancecollective Music: Said Mrad ‘Move’ (Music and rights are not owned by me) Dancers: @sonic3619 @dr.alex.andra @the_nandita @curiousdancinggirl @kat_m_love @danikatheshwiggler @natasha.enright.9 @veronica.farina.351 Video from 2017 Townsville Cultural Fest by Santhush De Silva Mohotti Costumes from Crystaliana #dancersofinstagram #bellydancersofinstagram #choreographyfun #saidmrad #orientalbellydance #bellydanceaustralia #bellydancersofaustralia #bellydancersliveforever See more

16.01.2022 #dancersonsocialchallenge with @kindviolet The Moody Noodle! No moody moods go with this big old bowl o’ noodles. I wanted to do something a little bit different to the habits I tend to fall into and I think I achieved it. I’ve been loving on this song for awhile but never really new how to dance to it. But what the heck, I thought I’d give it a go and I’m pretty happy with the totally wobbly, semi uncoordinated whatever you’d call this PTM - ASADI ... #dancersofinstagram #bellydancersofinstagram #transnationalfusiondance #fusionbellydance #asadi #persiantrap #themoodynoodle #bigbowlofnoodles #improvdance #checkthatshimmy #bellydancersofinstagram #bellydancersliveforever See more

14.01.2022 #dancersonsocialchallenge with @kindviolet Week 46 When you’re allowed to travel freely again, what would you like to do? I’d absolutely love the opportunity to return to Portland and Studio Datura to train with @rachelthebrice and continue my @8elementsofbellydance journey! It was such an unforgettable and life changing experience the first time travelling and studying there, and I look forward to learning even more. Other than that, I’d really just love to travel, learn a...nd perform all over the world and Australia. 12.01.2022 #dancersonsocialchallenge with @kindviolet Week 31! What style of dance you do most often? So I’m kinda cheating on this one because it’s supposed to be a video but I’ve used most of my already recorded videos and I just don’t have time to do a video for this one (sorry!) I dance primarily fusion belly dance. Previously I would have said Tribal (or Transnational) fusion and Datura Style but I also have strong roots in Raqs Sharqi which I can’t help but let slip into my chor...eographies and improv even when I don’t mean to. I think it’s hard to define any one style of dance because I take lots of different elements from styles of belly dance. 08.01.2022 #dancersonsocialchallenge with @kindviolet Week 44! What are your dance goals for 2021! Ha! I’m not falling for that trick again I had big plans for 2020 and obviously all of them went out the window! At this stage, I don’t have any *major* goals, but maybe I think I would like to create a couple of really good choreographies, continue to work on my fitness and add more dance practice into my schedule. #dancersofinstagram #bellydancersofinstagram #bellydanceaustralia #newgoals #kickinggoalsshootingstars #transnationalfusion #fusionbellydance #bellydancersliveforever

04.01.2022 Oooh dancey time!!

03.01.2022 #dancersonsocialchallenge with @kindviolet Still playing catch up with week 27 and this week was dedicated to sharing a favourite performance. I chose this piece ‘Moon Trance’ that I performed at the wonderful Jungle Shimmy in July last year. I love this choreography for a lot of reasons; I worked really hard to make use of this new exciting prop that I’d only just discovered (the Kamelia shorty fan), I loved this costume and looking back, although I initially could only see... the faults, I actually love this and am so proud of what I created. I would love to breathe new life to this and perform it again.
