07.01.2022 If you want to keep up with the latest on the Gippsland fires, tune into ABC Gippsland on the ABC listen app or 720AM on your radio. The ABC Gippsland team are doing a great job, on this devastating day. Its sounds like Sarsfield, Clifton Creek, Bruthen, Club Terrace, Cann River and Buchan have been affected, houses have probably been lost. And thousands are sheltering at Mallacoota as the fire moves over the area now. My thoughts are going out to everyone involved, especially the volunteer fire fighters. What a shocking time.

05.01.2022 The coroners report into the tragic deaths of four people during the 2015 Esperance fires was released yesterday. The ABC is copping it on FB today because we mentioned climate change in the headline. We are not trying to politicise this report at all and it was the coroner who made several strong comments about the impact of climate change on fighting and preventing out of control fires, not any ABC reporter. If you read this whole story, which was compiled by the hard-worki...ng Emily Smith while I was on the road chasing interviews, the online story mentioned almost all of the 12 recommendations. So please don't pass judgement on how we covered this issue before you read the whole thing. A headline is just a headline. We also did an interview for radio, which goes into the coroners recommendations in depth. And its our job to summarise these reports best we can in a short time frame. We do our best. It's a privileged to be able to interview brave people such as fire fighters who put their lives on the line battling these fires. And also families of victims. I personally find this side of journalism hard at times, but its my job so I just try to bring as much empathy as I can to it and make considered judgement about what's appropriate to ask. Here's hoping we can have a sensible discussion about the issues raised and some positive change can be made.
