22.01.2022 R O L L I N G Rolling is a developmental milestone that can impact sleep. In fact, anytime your baby/child is reaching/going through a developmental milestone you might notice their sleep regress for a little bit, this is completely normal. When babies are learning to roll they often roll onto their side and get stuck. They then need help to roll back, and if this happens during the night, they are going to call out for you to help them ... To help baby through this milestone: Offer plenty of tummy and floor time during the day, so they are having ample opportunity to practice their new skill. Sit beside youre baby on the floor during the day to help and guide them with their rolling. If they do wake overnight because they are stuck on their side or tummy, gently guide and roll them back. Make sure you transition them to a sleeping bag. A swaddled baby who can roll is a SIDS risk. Baby will eventually learn to roll back on their own. Most babies can do this by the six month mark. Tell me in the comments about your rolling babies? When did they first do it? Did it cause them to wake up during the night? Or Do you think your baby is getting close to rolling? I would love to know what your little ones are up to

20.01.2022 B E D T I M E R O U T I N E Its never too early or too late to start Babies and children love routine. They like to know what to expect. It makes them feel safe and secure. Establishing a bedtime routine early on will set your family up for much calmer nights in the future. Once in an established bedtime routine, bedtime becomes much more enjoyable for the whole family. For younger babies, this could look something like:... Bath/massage Feed in a quiet and dark environment Short book or lullaby Swaddle/sleeping bag Bed For an older baby/child it could like something like: Dinner Bath Milk Brush teeth Toilet/nappy change Two stories/ chatting about their day Tuck in and goodnight kiss TV/iPads before bedtime is very stimulating and the light can interfere with the production of the sleep hormone melatonin. Therefore, I recommend switching the tv/iPad off before dinner time or at least one hour before bedtime. What is bedtime like in your household at the moment? Whats your childs favourite part about their routine? Let me know in the comments

19.01.2022 When does my babys awake window begin? This might seem obvious, but Ive noticed theres conflicting advice on this one. Your babys awake window starts from the time they wake up, not the time you get them out of the bassinet/cot. Ideally baby needs to be asleep at the end of their awake window, so they dont become extremely overtired. If you were to count the awake time from the time they got out of the cot, they are going to be put down for their next nap past... the end of their natural awake window. They will then find it harder to get to sleep or wake up too soon after drifting off to sleep. Overtired babies struggle to get into a deep sleep and often wake after the first light part of their sleep cycle. See more

19.01.2022 Separation anxiety - can it impact sleep? Yes, it sure can. Separation anxiety often shows up around 7- 8 months of age. Its part of a developmental milestone called object permanence. This is where baby has learned that when you leave a room you havent disappeared. They now understand that youre still there even though they cant see you. This sudden realisation that you can go somewhere without them can be very overwhelming, and anxiety about separating from you can star...t to develop. It can also appear or peak at 9 months & 12 months and continue through to 18months and beyond, depending on babys temperament. This means at sleep time when you say goodnight a baby or toddler who previously could self settle starts to make a fuss and get quite upset. This is completely normal. What can you do to help baby through this? Provide your baby/toddler with lots of reassurance during the day, cuddles and affection. At sleep time you might have to stay with them until they fall asleep just so they know youre there supporting them through this time. An example of a gentle technique you could use to ease your little ones anxiety at bedtime is a technique called gradual withdrawal. This is where you sit on a chair by their cot/bed until they fall asleep and each night slowly move towards the door until you get to the point where you can say goodnight and leave the room without fuss. Introduce a comforter if baby is over 7 months. Wear it down your top so it smells like you. They will then be reminded of you when they are falling asleep and when they wake up in the middle of the night. It will also help them feel safe and secure. Children who are 2.5 years and older will benefit from a nice, relaxing and SLOW bedtime routine, where they are spending lots of quality time with you. Check ins, where you come back and check on them before they fall asleep are very reassuring for children of this age. Make sure bedtime is at a time they are tired and more likely to fall asleep, this gives them less time to worry about being separated from their parents. 18.01.2022 This cheeky little girl is my daughter Orla, she is 18 months old. I thought Id share a bit about our sleep struggles & how they were put back on track. Orla started her life as a pretty text book sleeper. She had her newborn fussy moments, but generally she woke for her night feeds, went back to sleep (sometimes she needed help to get back to sleep & my partner Mike was often the one doing the settling when she needed it ). She napped decent chunks throughout the day. ...This all changed when she contracted Bronchiolitis at 3-months-old. Over the course of 1-2 weeks we were back and forth between the hospital to monitor her One of my main jobs for Orla during this time was to give her extra feeds day & night. I of course willingly did this, and like any parent of a sick child I just wanted her to get better, & that she did Now she was better, I was still feeding constantly through the night. She was awake during these feeds & then would happily go back to sleep by herself. So I just thought at the time she must be hungry But in hindsight, at 6 months old she didnt need to be fed every 1-2 hours (she had started solids too and was doing really well). I was a mess and didnt know how to get Orla back on track. How was it resolved? At Sleep School (by this stage Orla was 6.5months), they assured me all would be okay. The plan on the first 2 nights was to dreamfeed her b/n 10-11pm & once at 5am, and settle her using a shh pat settling technique (a very gentle settling technique) at all other wake ups! I was like, yeah right thats not going to work. The first 2 nights she had to be settled several times & had the dreamfeed and the 5am feed. No other feeds! She woke up for the day happily at 7am. The next 3 nights the plan was to only do the dreamfeed. I was very nervous. Well, it worked & although she had to be resettled, the resettles got less & less. We left sleep school with her sleeping through, with just the dreamfeed Once we got home I had to continue with the plan of giving her the dreamfeed and resettling all other wake ups (if she woke) and to my disbelief...post continues in comments. 16.01.2022 If your baby is over 3 weeks old and they are not already sleeping in a dark room, I highly recommend you start. When I say dark, I mean as close to pitch black as possible At 3 weeks, the maternal melatonin babies receive from their mother has worn off. By 8 weeks, they start producing their own. Melatonin is important as it makes us feel sleepy and aids us in falling asleep. Melatonin is only produced when its dark. Another important component of melatonin production is ...exposure to daylight, as this assists us to produce serotonin & seratonin is converted to melatonin at night. Providing your baby with a dark sleep environment will: Help them feel sleepy at naps and bedtime. Assist in linking sleep cycles, goodbye catnapping and hello longer stretches of sleep. Help with early rising. Windows that are blacked out will ensure that morning sunlight isnt waking baby early and interfering with their sleep/wake rhythms. There are many different options for making sure the room is dark including: portable blackout blinds with suction cups, automated blockout shades that go on the outside of the window, homemade options such as sticking aluminum foil to the inside of the windows. Ive recently discovered @sleepysundays.co They make to measure blackout shades for windows. My understanding is they just simply cling to your windows and are easy to take on and off. Im yet to order some myself, but might be worth checking them out. 16.01.2022 T I R E D S I G N S To catch babys sleep window its very important to watch for tired signs. Follow the awake window that is appropriate for your childs age (I will be sharing age-appropriate awake times in a separate post soon), but always watch out for tired signs and pop baby down for a sleep once you notice these signs. Dont wait until overtired signs have appeared to start getting baby ready for bed.... The following are typical tired signs to watch out for: Jerky arm movements. Distant look/eyes glazed over. Bored. Red appearance on eyebrows. Ear and hair pulling (older babies) Become more vocal or chatty. Seem hungry but as soon as they suck they fall asleep. Clenched fists. Spilling milk after its been a while since their last feed. Yawning. Babys wont necessarily display all of these. Overtired signs Screaming. They dont feed well. Cry a lot. Rubbing eyes. 15.01.2022 L E A R N I N G T O S I T - U P Like all other developmental milestones learning to sit-up can impact sleep. Baby thinks its fun to practice their new skill during sleep time. Babies will often learn to sit-up before they learn how to lie back down. Its no wonder this new found skill can cause night wake ups. ... If your baby is starting to sit-up by themselves start teaching them how to lie down from this position. This will hopefully help avoid them waking you in the night for help to get back down. Sometimes babies will actually fall asleep sitting up and then startle awake because they have fallen down whilst asleep. Usually between 7 - 9 months baby can sit-up by themselves. Did learning to sit-up have an impact on your babys sleep?

15.01.2022 I thought Id pop some tips down for the upcoming daylight savings changes. The clocks move FORWARD one hour at 2am, Sunday 4 October for VIC, NSW, ACT, TAS & SA. Daylight savings starting is not as bad for us parents as when it is ending So if you dont do anything, your childs body clock will gradually and naturally adjust anyway. Give it a week or two to adjust. If your child is currently waking at 5.30/6am, this now becomes 6.30/7am, so this change could actually w...ork in your favour Tips if you want to get ahead of the upcoming time change: You need to start a week before, so that you are slowly shifting your childs body clock. Heres an example based on a 7am - 7pm schedule: Monday 28th Wake 15 mins earlier (if not early rising), so 6.45am, offer feeds and naps 15 mins earlier. Bring bedtime forward by 15 mins. Tuesday 29th: Same as Monday. Wednesday 30th: Wake baby 15mins earlier (6.30am), naps & feeds 15 minutes earlier and bedtime 15mins earlier. Thursday 1st: Same as Wednesday. Friday 2nd: Wake baby 15 mins earlier (6.15am), naps and feeds 15 mins earlier, bedtime 15 mins earlier. Saturday 3rd: Same as Friday Sunday 4th: Clocks have moved forward. Wake baby at 7am (6am old time). Make sure your childs room is nice and dark. They will be going to bed when its still quite light outside and a nice and dark room will assist with making the transition a bit easier. The birds are chirping nice and early. Play white noise to drown out early morning noises such as birds, traffic and those noisy trucks. Let me know if you have any daylight savings questions in the comments and I will answer them for you See more

11.01.2022 4 M O N T H G R O W T H S P U R T A lot happens at four months. Night sleep cycles change. A burst of melatonin occurs. Babies are much more alert and can become easily overstimulated by things happening around them. To top it off, there is usually a growth spurt around this time. Offering extra feeds throughout the day can help, but know that it is completely normal for baby to wake up for an extra feed during this time. You can be reassured it should only last a few nights to a week tops.

09.01.2022 Meet gorgeous Eden and her lovely Mama Beth. Eden was 3 months when I started working with Beth, and... 3 months is a super tricky age for sleep. It can take a looong time and a lot of patience and persistence with settling and resettling to get results. But that’s exactly what Beth did, she persisted with her settling strategies (shh pat) for a good 2-3 weeks and it’s absolutely paid off Swipe to read what she had to say about our time together. If you’re reading this tho...ugh and feeling overwhelmed at the thought of settling and resettling your baby for every nap and overnight (when they’re not due for a feed), don’t feel like you have to do this. If you have the time and energy go for it, but if you don’t that’s okay too. You can start with one nap a day to work on settling and resettling bubs in their cot/bassinet and once they are doing well with that nap, move onto the next. Only do what you can handle. Like I said, 3 months is a hard age. Baby is no longer a newborn so things like rocking to sleep that used to work easily to get them to sleep start to take longer, they are also still developing the skills needed to settle themselves and link sleep cycles. Be patient with yourself and your baby. A lot of babies still need hands on settling and resettling to sleep at this age and depending on weight will be waking twice overnight to feed. See more

08.01.2022 6 W E E K S Around 6 weeks after their due date, your baby will start to smile back at you. Not only is this super adorable, it is also a sign that your babys brain is maturing Crying and fussiness peaks at 6 weeks and then starts decreasing. Due to these biological changes, baby is becoming more capable of self-soothing and their night sleeps start to become more organised. Which means you can look forward to baby having a longer stretch of sleep (4-6 hours). 05.01.2022 What is self settling and what’s the difference between this and resettling? Your baby is considered to be able to self settle if you are able to put them down in their cot/bassinet and they fall asleep without any assistance from you or anyone else If your baby is being rocked, fed or assisted to sleep in other ways and they sleep all night this means they can resettle to sleep between sleep cycles, but they do not self settle to sleep. This is totally fine, if it’s workin...g. Fabulous The reverse of the above is when your baby falls asleep by themselves without any assistance, but is relying on you to get back to sleep after each sleep cycle during the day and/or night. This means they aren’t able to resettle and you’re probably getting sick of getting up waaaayy too many times during the night to resettle them. So as you can see, there’s a difference between the two, and self settling and resettling are two different skills. Baby can have mastered one and not the other. The good news is baby can learn to do both. Has your baby mastered one but not the other? After completing the questionnaire I will organise a time to give you a call. I will discuss and ask any follow up questions and you can ask me any questions you have. 3. Based on your questionnaire and our chat, I will write a detailed sleep plan for you to follow. 4. I will then support you to implement the plan for 2 weeks via email, text, phone (whichever you prefer). 5. You will be required to complete daily logs. These are really useful so I can get a picture of whats happening and then provide advice accordingly. 6. The process requires commitment and consistency. This is how you will see those wonderful results of a sleeping baby If this sounds like something you would benefit from participating in send me a dm and Ill get back to you ASAP. Tag a friend who you think might be keen. Stay tuned for 7-12 months age group call out in the coming weeks. Emma See more

03.01.2022 A baby/child who wakes up to start their day EARLIER than 6.15/6.30am can be considered an earlier riser. It is pretty typical for babies & young children to start their day at 6.30/7am. Sometimes earlier at around 6.15am. If your child is waking at 4.30/5.30am & wanting to start their day, we can safely say this can be extended to a more reasonable hour. The following reasons might be why your child is waking to start their so early: 1. Morning nap is too early - if ...the morning nap is offered too early, babys body clock learns that it will get another nap not long after waking. This reinforces the early morning wake up because the body knows it will be able to sleep again soon, so is quite happy to wake up early and start the day. If the morning nap is offered too early, in some babies it can also be seen as a continuation of night sleep. 2. Exposure to light, social interaction & food too early - Our circadian rhythm (internal body clock) is governed by exposure to light, social interaction and food (incl. milk). If baby is exposed to any of these at 4.30/5.30am it will tell their body clock its time to start the day. Newborns & younger babies might have a feed at this time and then go back to sleep. They shouldnt then wanting to start their day this early. 3. Too drowsy at bedtime if your child is put down to bed after getting very drowsy in your arms and falls asleep straight away, they have most likely associated falling asleep with being held. They might wake looking to be held again because this is how theyve associated falling asleep, even though they did fall asleep in their cot. This can then continue after each sleep cycle throughout the night. If a sleep cycle ends at 4.30/5.30am when sleep pressure & melatonin levels are lower, getting them back to sleep by holding is going to be much harder. 4. Insufficient naps Not enough naps/day sleep can interfere with night sleep. Quality naps promote quality night sleep. 5. Awake window between last nap & bedtime is too long If your child goes to bed overtired they are more likely to have trouble falling into a deep sleep & wake up during the night. This can then cause early rising. See more

01.01.2022 W H I T E N O I S E Is a positive sleep association and babies, especially newborns, love it! It reminds them of being in Mums tummy(it was pretty loud in there ). Not only is it great for assisting babies to fall asleep, its also a really useful tool in helping calm a newborn during those tricky early evening fussy periods. If you are not already using white noise, its never too late to start. Your baby will thank you for it, hopefully by sleeping ... Tips: Use white noise for naps on the go (in the pram or car) as well as at home. You probably need the volume up louder than you think, especially if youre using it to settle and calm loud crying. Think as loud as a vacuum cleaner. Once baby has calmed or is asleep you can turn it down to a lower volume. Keep it running for the duration of the nap and all night. Who uses white noise for their baby? What app/machine do you use?
