25.01.2022 If you intend to claim your 2018 Family Tax Benefit as a lump sum, you need to have your 2018 Tax Return lodged by 30 June 2019

25.01.2022 Worth a look if you want to brush up on the jargon a little for your business

22.01.2022 SCAM ALERT! Be on the lookout for suspicious emails claiming to be from myGov. This latest phishing scam from a fake myGov email address asks you to fill o...ut a form in order to claim a tax refund. Dont click anywhere in the email and dont provide your personal details! Always think twice about clicking links or opening attachments in emails, and remember we dont have an online tax refund form. Warn your friends and family to stay alert, and get all the details at www.ato.gov.au//Online-ser/Identity-security/Scam-alerts/ Security tip: Make accessing our online services more secure update your myGov sign-in options at https://my.gov.au so you receive an SMS code for each log in.

22.01.2022 Employers - superannuation contributions are only considered as being paid once they are received by the Superannuation Fund. Superannuation contributions are only tax deductible in the year they are paid, therefore to get the deduction this year you will need to make sure the Fund receives them before 30 June (which is a Sunday). If you use a clearing house, you need to allow extra time. For example, the SBSCH have advised that they will need to receive contributions by close of business Monday 24 June 2019 to have them processed and cleared in the relevant Funds by 30 June.

20.01.2022 Difficult working conditions today! He’s playing defence with my invoices not even my cat, lucky he’s cute

20.01.2022 Have you registered your Business Name? From November 2018 the Tax Office is removing all trading names from the ABN Lookup, only registered business names will be listed. Business names can be registered through the ASIC website.

20.01.2022 Are you affected by payment delays?? I urge all small business owners to participate..... The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman is conducting a review of payment times and practices, where you can confidentially name businesses that use poor payment practices, pay late, set their own terms, demand discounts etc. ... I would also suggest that all small business owners familiarise themselves with the ASBFEO's website and services, there are some great tools and resources available. Please find the link https://www.asbfeo.gov.au/payment-times#

18.01.2022 31 October Lodgement Date: Tax Returns are due for lodgement 31 October 2018 for all individual taxpayers that prepare and lodge their own return. If a tax agent lodges your return, it is generally not due until March or May 2019. BUT If your 2017 Tax Return was outstanding as at 30 June 2018 you will have an early due date of 31 October 2018.... If you have prepared your own return in the past but want an agent to prepare your 2018 Return, make sure you get on to the agent's tax list by 31 October to get the extended lodgement due dates. 18.01.2022 A timely reminder as we head toward 30 June, but remember to always discuss the application to your business with your accountant first, and never spend money for tax reasons alone.

18.01.2022 Cash Flow Assistance for Business: With the economic stimulus package announced recently, little has been reported about the area that interests me most as it is the one most likely to assist my small business clients, and that is the cash flow boost for employers. There is not much information available, so we will likely have to wait for it to be passed by Parliament before we know more, but this is what we do know:... - aimed at employers, businesses with under $50m turnover that employs staff between 1 January 2020 and 30 June 2020; - minimum $2,000 up to $25,000 tax free payment; and - payment of 50% of your BAS or IAS from 28 April, payable within 14 days. What does this mean? - Get your March BAS lodged by 28 April 2020, I will be contacting my employee clients earlier than usual this quarter to get their information in as soon as possible, and will be giving priority to those who need it most; - Sounds like it will also be applicable for the June BAS; - It is unclear how this payment will be calculated, whether it will be 50% of the full BAS or only one or two components, such as GST, PAYG Withholding and/or PAYG Instalment, or just PAYG Withholding; - We can only assume that the payments will be paid to the bank account details recorded on the Activity Statement account, so please make sure that these are up to date and correct (or contact me if you'd like me to check it for you); and - The press release doesn't say anything about the payment of the BAS's and says refunds will be paid, there is no mention of crediting existing debts, hopefully these payments will be paid to bank accounts and not offset against a payment arrangement or previous BAS debt. But we won't know for sure until it has been legislated. Businesses that don't have employees won't be eligible. Hopefully further stimulus measures will be introduced to help sole traders that don't have employees. I'm also hoping they are keeping measures in their back pocket to help the wider public and employees ready to announce in the budget in May. Any questions, feel free to email me or give me a call, and let's hope that by supporting each other we can all get through these unusual times with as little damage as possible.

07.01.2022 Copied from Scamwatch email: Warning about tax scams Tax scams seem to be everywhere at the moment and Scamwatch is warning people not to engage with phone calls or emails they receive threatening arrest or jail over unpaid tax debts.... Reports of these scams have jumped significantly during the past month. The scam is timed to coincide with the cut-off date for people needing to have their tax returns submitted to the Australian Tax Office. Most of these scams occur over the phone. People get a call from an aggressive scammer directly or receive a robotic-sounding voice message informing them they need to contact a phone number in relation to an outstanding tax debt, or face imminent arrest and jail time. The scammer pretends to be from the Australian Tax Office or the police to scare people into believing the contact is real. They will tell people to buy gift cards like iTunes or Google Play to pay the tax debt or a fine. They may also get people to send money by other methods like Bitcoin ATMs or pre-paid credit cards. This is a scam. The tax office will never threaten you with arrest, or demand immediate payment of a tax debt or fine with unusual payment methods like gift cards or Bitcoin. If you ever get a call or email claiming you will be arrested due to a tax debt, simply hang up the phone or delete the email. Do not call the number provided in the phone message or email you receive. If youre concerned the contact may be legitimate, you can also call the ATO on 1800 008 540 to check its veracity. You can also report the scam at www.scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam. @scamwatch_gov Follow us on Twitter Report a scam Report a scam on our website

07.01.2022 An interesting article from the ATO about the tax implications of crowdfunding. If you are donating to a crowdfunding appeal, the donation is only tax deductible if the recipient is registered as a deductible gift recipient. As with any other donation, it is not tax deductible simply because it is a donation.... You can check if an entity is a deductible gift recipient on ABN Lookup. https://www.ato.gov.au//Y/Drought-assistance-crowdfunding/

06.01.2022 Well worth it, Lisa is amazing!

06.01.2022 If youre unsure which work-related expenses you can claim at tax time, remembering the three golden rules can help. 1. You must have spent the money yourself (...and not been reimbursed). 2. The expense must be directly related to earning your income. 3. You must have a record to prove the purchase. For more information on what you can claim, visit https:///www.ato.gov.au/deductions

06.01.2022 SCAM ALERT Weve seen an increase in scam text messages (SMS) offering fake tax refunds. 04.01.2022 Some sensible and timely advice

04.01.2022 If it sounds too good to be true........

03.01.2022 From 1 August 2018, 5 days unpaid leave entitlement for employees dealing with family and domestic violence. Interesting, I hope it works effectively in practice. I can't help but think most compassionate employers would allow this unpaid leave if it was needed, and the type of employers that would only provide the leave to comply with the law would probably find another way around it. https://www.fairwork.gov.au//new-family-and-domestic-viole

03.01.2022 Employers: Dont forget your PAYG payment summary annual report is due on 14 August. The report includes all payments you made to payees and the amounts you withheld from those payments during the financial year. For more information, see https://ato.gov.au/PAYGW

03.01.2022 Some important information - Every year I get calls from clients saying they received a call like this and want to check if its real.

03.01.2022 Know a farmer? Primary producers may be able to deduct the full business expense of fodder storage assets this tax time! These assets can include: silos l...iquid feed supplement storage tanks bins for storing dried grain hay and grain storage sheds. Get the details at www.ato.gov.au//livestock-and-other-/depreciating-assets/

01.01.2022 I appreciate those of my clients whose work is taking a little longer than usual at the moment, I am in the midst of implementing a whole new practice management and tax and accounting system whilst also trying to spend some time with my kids in the last few days of school holidays. Thank you for your patience!
