11.01.2022 Look at the earth crowded with growth, new and old bursting from their strong roots hidden in the silent, live ground, each seed [...] knowing what to do, each... one demanding its own rights on the earth. So artist, you too from the depths of your soul...let your roots creep forth, gaining strength. - Emily Carr, 1932 Today marks the anniversary of Canadian modernist Emily Carr’s passing 73 years ago. The Gallery is proud to house the largest collection of paintings and works on paper by the artist. While the Gallery purchased its first work by Emily Carr in 1937, the majority of works that constitute the Emily Carr Trust Collection came to the Gallery following her death in 1945. Visitors can always see Carr’s works at the Gallery on the 4th Floor. The current exhibition /Emptiness pairs her work with that of Lui Shou Kwan, founder of the New Ink Movement in Hong Kong, offering a new intercultural perspective on one of Canada’s most significant historical artists. 06.01.2022 Found this painting from my time in Vancouver whilst writing a proposal this week. It’s still my favourite & one I’m going to revisit during my time in Yalgoo. ‘Wild. 2016. Acrylic on canvas. 70 x 90cm.

06.01.2022 My contribution to CGG Christmas Tree trail. My design draws inspiration from the natural environment of the Mid West region, focusing on the Western Australian Native Christmas Tree. Nuytsia Floribunda reminds me of Christmas because for as long as I can remember, when I drove home to Geraldton to visit my Mum, brothers and sister for Christmas, the Native Christmas Tree would provide a festive floral border for the trip up the Great Northern Highway. ... Nuytsia floribunda delivers bursts of orange flowers every December and is associated with Christmas due to its flowering season but also because it is one of the worlds largest variety of mistletoe. My interpretation of the Christmas Tree aims to spread a little festive cheer by bringing native mistletoe into the city centre for Christmas.
