23.01.2022 With Manolis Kladakis, of Emmanuel Barber Shop @ Clemton Park...
20.01.2022 It is all in the Snip, Trim and Cut... Manolis Kladakis and Emmanuels Barber Shop Coming across Manolis Kladakis bustling barber shop in Clemton Park is an e...xperience. As Vasilis Vasilas points out, The queue of customers, who gather on a Saturday morning outside Manolis shop, before he opens, is indicative of his invaluable expertise and wonderful service. One regular customer even brings his chair to wait in the queue! Manolis parents Grigoris and Aspasia are from from Chania, Crete, and Plomari, Lesvos, respectively. In the mid 1960s, Grigoris already had his barber shop in Albury, NSW. Once Grigoris and married in 1967, they settled in Albury where their children, Kyriaki and Stratos, and Manolis were born. As a child, Manolis remembers there were many Greek families living in the Albury- Wodonga area and even a Greek church, The Archangels. Manolis was in kindegarten when his parents decided to return to Greece, and they settled in Ano Pefki, Athens. As a teenager, he began to seriously consider his future and thought about either doing an auto- mechanic or electricians apprenticeship. It was only a chance conversation with a neighbour that Manolis found out she was studying hairdressing at Nikos Amarandos Private College; it was her very glowing opinion of her course that Manolis decided to enroll in the College. He found work in Elias Zarbalis hairdressing salon in Kolonaki where many models, actors and singers were customers; he then worked at the Vantzelou salon in Marousi. His growing reputation and experience inspired Manolis to take the important step of opening his own business and he did so in Neo Iraklio, . In the meantime, he married Angeliki (nee: Koutantzi) and they have two children, Grigoris and Ariadne. The Greek financial crisis, however, changed everything for so many people; as a barber, Manolis witnessed the downturn first-hand whether it was the infrequency of his customers visits or their conversations fixed on the finance and/or politics. Talking over future prospects with his brother, Stratos, they decided to come out to Australia. Manolis believes it took about two years for Angeliki and him to find their feet; the adjustment was made easier with Uncle Pericles and Aunt Zoe, and their children, who were such a strong support network. For one-and-a-half years, Manolis worked as a barber in Martin Place, while working on weekends for another barber. Having his own business in Athens inspired Manolis to look around for premises and it was his cousin Eric who saw a vacant shop in Clemton Park. With the shopping strip livening up with Chicken Plus and the Crepe House Café opening, it was a great opportunity which Manolis had to take. What is amazing about Manolis barber shop is its warm family environment, as he states, It is also great to see three generations of family coming to the shop- the grandfather, father and son. That is the greatest endorsement that a seventy year old as well as a seven year old are happy to come here and get their haircut. It is very homely, where customers all feel they are part of the conversations... !!!! See more
