23.01.2022 October long weekend is Emmaville gem-fest time with stalls in the park, fossicking field trips and more, Field trips include an afternoon and evening visit to ...the emerald mine. Fossicking in the afternoon, a BBQ at the mine while the sun goes down then observing and collecting fluorescent rocks at night See more

22.01.2022 The field trip at the Emerald mine during the long week end requires U V torches. you can purchase these from around $18 - $20 from most hardware, camping stores or on line. The cheap ones will do for this trip however are only 365nm-400nm wavelength, some of the rare earth minerals will not fluoresce at this end of the ultra-violet spectrum We have some torches for sale or loan prior to the evening event. Don't forget some extra batteries and a white light torch. Hope to see you all there!

21.01.2022 UV (ultra-violet) torches are required for the Emmaville Gem-fest night field trip October long weekend. The torches range in price from around $15-$50, the cheaper they are...the less power...the less chance of finding fluorescent material. They are available at hardware stores and on the net. Good luck and hope to see you here for BBQ before dark. Bookings at Emmaville Cravan Park, costs $10pp, kids under 12 free, $3-$5 for BBQ, Sausage, meat/vege patti. rolls, drinks etc

Aims of the field t...rips include the understanding of mineralisation in pegmatites, deep leeds, and local intrusive rocks. To investigate the complex history of fluvial deposition and the relationships between sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks of the region and the processes that have shaped the landscape of today. Cost is $25 per person, teenagers and students $5, under 13s are free. Group discounts available, Refreshments and mineral packs provided. 15.01.2022 Thank you to all that made the effort to travel to Emmaville and visit the Emerald mine during the long week end. The Gem-fest was a great success and we will endeavor to continue to improve this event. For those who went on the Sunday field trip here is some in formation about the geology in general... The Y-water mine is located in Cainozoic alluvial sediments, the deep leads have been totally stripped out by mining, These un-named Holocene sediments are most likely re work...ed Tertiary sediments due to the long term erosion processes and weathering of the underlying Volcanic rocks. The intermittent periods of volcanism during the Late Permian through to the later Tertiary have produced changes within the older drainage systems and these stream beds are the deep leads of tin bearing wash that has been eroded from the original hornblende quartz granite hill sides prior to volcanism. The complex fluvial history of the region is illustrated by the variation within the strata. Massive or laminated lenses of red clay and pipe clay (kaolin) intervals combined with pebble lenses grading to conglomerate indicating the constant changes from higher energy to lower energy depositional environments. The trace fossils were located in a calcareous tuf (tufa).( that is a volcanic ash deposit that has a very high concentration of calcium carbonate that has been leeched out of the surrounding basalt.) A very unique and interesting deposit, the burrows were most likely from a marine or fresh water organism that may have abandoned the substrate due to the increasing calcification of their habitat or from a changing climate. 10.01.2022 I have made a mistake in my last post. Please note. The cost for the UV day/night field trip to the emerald mine is $10 for adults and $5 for school age kids/teenagers. If you would like a feed and a drink at the BBQ it will cost no more than $5 for food. Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience.

09.01.2022 Please note. The field trip to the emerald mine 29th September is suited to 4WD or high ground clearance vehicles only. Parking for other vehicles is a 1km walk to the mine site. I am sure people without 4WD vehicles can also arrange a lift up the hill.

09.01.2022 Stay tuned for up coming geology field trips to study the local rock types, particularly the volcanic succession and its relationship with the sedimentary rocks of the area. The field trips can be booked prior to your visit for anyone whom may be interested.

03.01.2022 Minarama field trip on again! All welcome for the Thursday fossicking trip and Friday evening fluorescent rock experience. Bookings through Glenn Innes tourist center.
