This poem is from The World’s Wife (1999) in which Carol Ann Duffy examines characters from history, fairy tales, myths and popular culture; often women who were previously obscured by men. King Midas from Ovid’s Metamorphosis asked the gods to grant his wish that everything he touched would turn to gold. Here Duffy describes how it might have been for his lover shortly after the wish was granted.
