24.01.2022 NPY EC is recruiting! Empowered Communities is currently recruiting for an Anangu Engagement Officer with the NPY Emerging Leaders Program and we’re asking for your help with finding the right person for the job. We are looking for someone with the confidence to build relationships with e...merging leaders and talk up the program among Anangu leaders and communities, government and service providers. The Engagement Officer role is an Aboriginal-identified position and we encourage any interested Anangu to apply for the role. If this sounds like the right job for you or someone you know, find out more at https://www.npywc.org.au/jobs/

22.01.2022 Are you interested in Aboriginal-led education? Would you like to see a 'red-dirt curriculum', with Anangu developing and delivering culturally appropriate teaching for our children? Join Children's Ground in a live discussion - tonight - including First Nations educators from around Australia.

21.01.2022 We are proud to launch the NPY Regional Development Roadmap! The Regional Development Roadmap describes an Anangu-led vision for the future in the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. This roadmap outlines Empowered Communities' current work and areas of focus for the upcoming years. It is a map for how organisations and government can work together, guided by Anangu, towards a better life for families and communities. It shows the direction for our shared journey to support Anangu empowerment. You can watch the story of the roadmap here (coming soon in Pitjantjatjara and Ngaanyatjarra versions!), and find out more at https://www.npyec.org.au/regional-development-roadmap.html

20.01.2022 Through the Kulintja Kutju (one vision) Group, Anangu are having a real say and making a real difference. Over the past 2 years, the Group have reviewed $17.6 million worth of program funding in the NPY Region - providing advice and recommendations to Government funders and service providers. But this is still only a small fraction of the total amount of Government spending in the region. When Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a genuine say in the design and delivery of services that affect them, better life outcomes are achieved. Kulintja Kutju Group members hope to work with more Federal, State and Territory Governments in the future, to provide advice on Anangu priorities, and to review all program design and funding for the NPY region.

17.01.2022 Empowered Communities is proud to launch the NPY Guide to Work Experience! Containing useful checklists, tips and links, this Guide helps schools and employers in NPY communities work together to provide consistent, positive and meaningful work experience placements for Anangu students. It has been created BY and FOR students, families, schools and employers in Central Australia’s NPY Region.... The NPY Guide to Work Experience is a part of the Empowered Communities Transition Support Initiative to improve the school to work outcomes for young people. My vision is to see kids from here get qualifications and jobs. But to do this in the future we need to look at what is going on today. Makinti Minutjukur (former Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Education Committee (PYEC) member) Download the Guide https://www.npyec.org.au//empowered_communities_npy_guide_ and find out more about NPY School to Work Transition Support here: https://www.npyec.org.au/transition.html

11.01.2022 For the first time, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will share decision-making with governments on Closing the Gap. Well done to the Coalition of Peaks and all involved in developing this new agreement! The NPY Empowered Communities Regional Development Roadmap describes a plan for improving the lives of Anangu in our region. Here Catherine Liddle describes the new national roadmap for Closing the Gap and what it means for improving the lives of all Aborigin...al and Torres Strait Islanders across Australia. Both describe the importance of ensuring our people are 'in the driver's seat' as respected experts, leading the discussions, decision-making and service delivery for our communities.

10.01.2022 Now here's a great opportunity for Anangu storytellers... Aboriginal Studies Press is looking for Aboriginal writers and artists with a tale to tell. They are interested in publishing children's books (in English and local languages) that capture the imagination with rich cultural stories! Here's your chance to be published!

09.01.2022 Was very lucky to be out on the APY Lands last week with malpas Raymond Scales who is doing great work for EC member Purple House, and InaWantji Scales, who is starting a new role with Anangu organisation PYEC. Ray and Ina are also members of the Kulintja Kutju Group, which met this week in Pukatja to review a government-funded program. Looking forward to being back on the lands soon and learning from these leaders and working with EC member organisations to support Anangu-led governance and decision-making

07.01.2022 Last week, a selection of Kulintja Kutju (‘One Vision’) Group members met (via Zoom!) to discuss the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on Anangu in the NPY region. Acknowledging the seriousness of the virus and importance of restrictions to protect peoples’ health, all Group members are worried about the significant impact on peoples’ ability to fulfill cultural obligations such as attending sorry camps and funerals, their ability to return to family following travel for medica...l and other reasons, and ability to purchase essential goods. To find the right balance, the Kulintja Kutju Group is working on a proposal for a system which reflects the needs of Anangu to move within the NPY region for specific reasons. The Group is also calling for more regular updates for communities, so that people know what the rules are and how long they will be in place for. The Group is looking forward to talking to government and local organisations to explore their proposed model.

07.01.2022 On 20 August, the Kulintja Kutju Group met again to do the important work of reviewing government-funded programs and giving recommendations to government and service providers. This meeting, the group heard from Surf Life Saving SA about their Indigenous Surf & Sports Program in Mimili and Amata- which provides water safety, water skills and nationally recognised training. The Group appreciated hearing from SLSSA and thinks that the program is really important for Anangu- especially for tjitji tjuta. They should keep working with Anangu and Anangu organisations and have this program wherever there are pools on the lands for safety and employment opportunities. Thank you as well to Sam Osborne for doing a great job translating- wiru! Palyau until next time!

05.01.2022 Connecting with communities.... Over the last two weeks, Empowered Communities has been meeting with APY Community Councils to report back about the work we are doing in the region. Council members heard the latest news about the 2021 NPY Emerging Leaders Program, the valuable work that the Kulintja Kutju group has been doing assessing government-funded programs, and how EC is supporting Fregon Community Council to make sure that Anangu have real jobs during the Fregon School... redevelopment. Thanks to Amata, Indulkana, Kanpi and Pipalyatjara Councils for making time to meet with EC, and a big thank-you to Mark Campbell for talking to Amata Council about his experiences with the Emerging Leaders Program.

04.01.2022 Very lucky to be back on the Lands while we can here at EC. Great to spend some time in Amata talking about the Kulintja Kutju Group and Emerging Leaders program and especially lucky to have malpa Raymond Scales show me around (forgot to grab a pic before we left so unfortunately its just me in shot). Hoping to be back here soon

02.01.2022 Over the past 2 years, NPY Empowered Communities has brought together collective knowledge, best practice experiences, robust evidence and the brightest ideas to design and implement a Transition Support Initiative to improve the school to work outcomes for young people in the region. Through partnerships between schools, families and employers, this initiative focus' on work readiness and supported pathways to employment through school, curriculum, work exposure and opport...unities that connect education to local employment or training opportunities. With implementation underway since late 2019, we have been evaluating the process of co-design and collective action and are monitoring the projects' activities and outcomes. We have recently published an implementation report on the NPY School to Work Transition Support - you can check it out here: https://www.npyec.org.au//105789899/s_2_w_6_month_report_s

01.01.2022 Check out this great new app (in language!) for Anangu needing to know more about the NDIS and support for disabilities ‘in the bush’. Well done Ninti One and Interplay Project for this innovative work https://disabilityinthebush.com/

01.01.2022 Yesterday, members of the Kulintja Kutju Group participated in a great workshop to start developing a program logic for the Group- a strong story for what the Kulintja Kutju Group is about, what the Group needs to do its important work, and what change the Group wants to see for Anangu and Yarnangu communities and families. Thanks to Nyuringka, Robert and Raymond Scales for sharing your insights and to Sam Togni for being a fantastic facilitator. Looking forward to next week's workshop in Umuwa!
