25.01.2022 I've been asked a few times lately, how do I take care of myself after a busy day with clients? As a Counsellor, it is so important that I practice what I preach and take time out to recharge so I can show up as the best version of myself. The below, whilst not an exhaustive list, provides a solid foundation allowing me the energy to hold the space needed for my clients. Meditating, journalling and daily affirmations.... Eating nourishing foods, often plant based or gluten free, to combat inflammation. Mindful check ins with myself ensuring I am actively listening to what my mind and body need. Setting boundaries and being selective with how I choose to use my energy in my downtime. Taking time out to reset during the day. This could be as simple as sitting and enjoying a coffee in the sun. Spending time outside. I definitely need to expand this into my daily routines rather just on weekends. Exercise. I have a love/hate relationship with structured exercise so now I am aiming for 30 mins per day, 5 days a week. Building in time to be creative! This can be creating my social media posts, making natural self-care products or getting lost on Pinterest!

As with any long term illness, at times you can feel isolated, dismissed, frustrated and anxious. You can feel that no one understands what you are going through and find yourself withdrawing. At my worst, I myself was struggling with my physical health without understanding the impact it was having on my mental and emotional health until I was already in too deep. Putting it down to being tired, I slowly started to cut myself off from the world around me and went into complete survival mode. I thought I was doing the right thing, taking advice from doctors such as: Taking a holiday Taking time off work Having more surgeries Being in the wellness field already, I knew enough that I needed to talk to someone about how I was feeling but unfortunately I was let down by all the avenues I had tried. This is all too common in our current health system. This was my driving force behind becoming a Holistic Counsellor. I am one who needs to know the WHY. I need to understand the bigger CONNECTION. Holistic Counselling explores mind-body medicine, diving into how stress and illness impact our bodies, including mental health. If this sounds like you, whether with endometriosis or just life in general, persist and find a professional to talk to. You will be talking with your counsellor regularly over weeks or months and should feel at ease and be able to talk openly and honestly with them.
